At this point, record store clerks, Last.fm taggers, and music journalists are running out of genres to umbrella these guys, or should I say men, (just kill me now) under. Brooklyn-based noise rock group The Men have made a speedy return, following their darling punk homage 2012 record Open Your Heart with a continued level of artistic evolution on their 4th LP: New Moon . With a deft reputation in experimenting with post-hardcore, post-punk, shoegaze and psychedelic rock, The Men [...]

I've talked often about being able to foot the bill for several Shorthanded Goals a month. It never really ever works out. Sifting through all the excess tracks and drawing out links and MP32s takes some time. While once a week is easy, more than once is hard. Today I have some time. This iteration of SHG is gonna contain both absolutely brand new tracks as well as some that were passed over in the past month. It's a track or two smaller haul, but still packing the same punch. Shorthanded Goals is a feature that melds the [...]

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars It wasn't too long ago that Being There released their debut record, but several spins into Breaking Away and you'll see the growth in the London four piece. The guitar playing is tighter, and the recording maximizes the pop sensibility of the group. If you're in need of a good pop rock record, then your best bet for 2013 is to begin here. "Allen Ginsberg" gently begins things, with nothing more than the quieted vocal [...]
Being There want to do just that, returning to the abandoned trails blazed by Pavement and others.

Youthful London alt-pop rockers, Being There , formed in 2010 while attending university in Manchester. They eventually moved to London, joined the label Young & Lost Club, and spent 2011 touring with Noah & The Whale. On Breaking Away , the four-piece outfit offers a pleasant introduction. Its charm is found in the sound of young musicians finding their voice and identity, much like U2 with Boy . There's a pervasive sense of melancholy that's gleaned through the perspective of songwriters on the cusp of adulthood, looking back at the carefree [...]

Back in high school, I used to make covers for my textbooks by cutting up brown paper grocery bags. I'd then spend the school year writing all over them - lyrics to songs, lines from novels I was reading, and famous sayings in foreign languages I found in the back of a beat-up dictionary. Other kids had posters on their walls; I had "Omnia vincit amor, et nos cedamus amori." Teenage years are awful for just about everyone, but I at least have positive memories of those textbook covers. There was comfort in being able to hide behind a powerful [...]

Good mornin' to ya! A quick hitter today, but we're fans of these three tracks: Brave Baby - "Living In A Country" from Forty Bells out 15 January 2013 Superb indie rock track from this Charleston, SC quartet. Themes of loneliness and paranoia are accented by the ice pick rhythm guitar and eerie pitch bending on the back end of this track. Me likey lots! Click download for a free mp3. [...]

photo by Lille Harman Being There is a four piece band from London, gearing up for a big 2013. If you're a fan of Dinosaur Jr , Yuck , The Pains of Being Pure at Heart , and the like, you'll dig the hazy alt-rock these guys [...]

This is perhaps my favorite discovery of the weekend, so I hope it makes your Monday an extra special one. Being There are an up-and-coming London act, making waves by pretty much killing an old school alternative sound. Their album, Breaking Away , comes out early next year on January 29th, and I promise you that it'll warm your heart. The pacing of the tracks, like the one below, is steady, with hints of distortion on the guitars; the vocals are soft, almost whispered, creating an incredible effect. I'm [...]

London lo-fi indie rockers Being There have put up a video for their most recent single, “Tomorrow”. The 3rd single off of their debut record, Breaking Away , is full of melodic 90’s guitars and soothing vocals that harken back to the more romantic moments from Yuck. The song is all about that inescapable young love, and all the hopes and dreams for what the future can hold for it. As you spend the last few days in your Summer House, I can’t think of a better soundtrack than this. [...]

It's been a long time since I last put together a mixtape here on the 'ole Walrus, which is a shame as mixtapes were actually what I started this blog about back in those heady days of 2006. We've done various series of compilations over the years, but one of the most popular continued to be Summer Days Through The Folkish Haze which were full of folk-twinged summery goodness. Well... I think Summer Daze is somewhat of a continuation of that series - which would now be up to vol.4 - except that I've moved away from folk towards summer [...]

Quickly cast your ears over this beautiful acoustic version of Being There's 'To Allen Ginsberg'. It's running as an exclusive here at S//S//N (terribly exiting i'm sure) so get stuck into the free download and, when you've given it a few spins make sure to head over to Y&LC and pick up the record.

Perennially fantastic urban-festival Dot to Dot tomorrow descends upon Bristol, depressingly just in time for my departure from the city. Seeing as most of the internet doesn’t live in Bristol I would imagine that many of you are in a similarly frustrating situation. Worry not, though, because the line-up is teeming with exciting new bands which you can hear many of below. And if you are making it along to the festival, you should definitely take some time out to point yourself in the direction of some of these brilliant new bands… Friends [...]

Bloody hell! Two weeks in a row... this is in danger of becoming a habit! Yep, against all known odds, Friday Film's back a week later with more video goodness: Being There - 17 The excellent Being There's new song is typically, well, excellent - a chintzy opening gives way to stupurous soft rock, complete with delicious sunset guitars. Click here to view the embedded video. Kotki Dwa - Poison Aint this [...]

April’s been a tough month on the music blog front. There have been distractions on the home front coupled with a general dip in enthusiasm levels with regard to music discovery. I’m just happy to see April go and am hoping that things are a lot better in May. Despite the hiccups, April did see music by the likes of Pangea , Odonis Odonis , Jessie Ware [...]

É o single mais recente do primeiro disco do Being There, "Breaking Away". Confiram e acompanhem a trajetória dessa banda, que tem tudo para aparecer mais na mídia durante esse ano. Ah, e curtam mais no Bandcamp deles . [...]
Lots of DIY feel to the videos this week, from Being There's 'never too late to learn' clip to the light touches in Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles deceptively simple cut. But top place this week goes to Plants and Animals for the grin upon grin inducing showmanship of "The End of That". It's [...]
Vale a pena. Tanto a
I think you know the drill by now. Monday = another playlist. The keenest eyed and sharpest memory'd listener will notice that this is the first Melancholy Monday featuring an artist who already showed up in an earlier playlist (strictly speaking, so, for example, I'm not counting "Wilco" and "Billy Bragg & Wilco" as the same artist), so the first person to figure out who that artist is will be roundly mocked for not having a life. Enjoy. 1. Yaz: Winter Kills ("Upstairs At Eric's," 1982) 2. Sufjan Stevens: The Seer's [...]
