In this installment, we take a look at the End of the Road affiliated No Direction Home ; the newly revamped Field Day and its sibling event The Apple Cart Festival ; the inaugural Nova Festival , and Somerset's Sunrise Celebration. "I too lived - Brooklyn, of ample hills, was mine." - Walt Whitman, "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" By this point, it's an old story that Manhattan has lost much of its cultural capital to its neighbor across the East River. Nowadays, if you want cutting edge art, if you want to find clusters of musicians meeting at bars and coffee shops to talk shop, if you want to find the venues and neighborhoods that foster a multi-colored collaboration between the arts and across genres, cultures, ethnicities, and classes, you go to Brooklyn. Thirty years ago, you could say the [...]
Yes I realize that technically we're a week late on this mix, but we wanted to do the yearly Sasquatch! Music Festival edition mix early. In years past we've released these closer to the... Read the rest on Speakerboxxx.com
When it comes to instrumental post-rock bands, few can be named that can make a lasting impact and escape from labels such as "boring music". Explosions In The Sky is certainly one of the biggest references for this, and you might agree with me that - after listening to their sound - Constantina has just joined this small group of bands. The bands sure do have a lot in common sonically, but, in my opinion, Constantina is a bit closer to the likes of Beirut , since they take the effort to explore rhythms of the [...]

It started out as simple way to honor the life and music of Bob Dylan , by Rolling Stone editor Austin Scaggs at his favorite local East Village bar, but over the course of a decade Dylan Fest has become an annual raucous event that's a must attend for any Zimmy fan. Now in its tenth year, the two-night event will celebrate Mr. Dylan's 71st birthday on May 24 (his actual birthday) and 25 at New York's Irving Plaza, with another impressive roster of musicians that includes Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes), Matt Vasquez (Delta Spirit), Nicole [...]

Campaign season is well underway and President Obama is hitting college campuses across the US of A. The POTUS visited Boulder last night and spoke to Coloradans and Americans across the nation about keeping the student loan interest rate locked instead of doubling in July. At some point, the POTUS made his way to the Hill landmark, the Sink (great burgers btw). Check out his "Slow Jam" with the Roots and Jimmy Fallon that would've made Isaac Hayes proud. Dave Matthews was also in on the action recorded from Tarheel [...]

Zach Condon and his merry band Beirut shuffled back into the limelight last night with a performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno! playing their stellar track "Santa Fe" off last year's The Rip Tide . Incidentally, it's been six months to the day since Beirut took to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to perform the same song, if you want to compare and contrast .

Following two fantastic shows at Coachella, Beirut continue on their strong trajectory! Tonight, Tuesday, April 24, the band make their debut performance on one of late night's longest running shows, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno! Last fall, just following the release of The Rip Tide, Beirut performed back-to-back on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and the Late Show with David Letterman. They are thrilled to make their distinct mark on The Tonight Show this evening! Be sure to tune ...
With their first Coachella 2012 performances a not-quite-distant memory, over the weekend some artists engaged in live collaborations to make for unique experiences in their second fest go-around. John Fogerty joined the Black Keys , Annie Clark of St. Vincent sang with Andrew Bird, and Thom Yorke came out during Modeselektor's set to perform "Shipwreck." The spine tingling magical moment of the weekend was during Radiohead at the end of "Karma Police" when the crowd continued to sing "I Lost Myself" after the band had stopped. Check out the robust gallery of photos above and [...]

Beirut is not a band I think about very often. Sometimes I used to forget what they even sound like. I do that a lot. When you review a lot of bands, you sometimes forget that you've ever heard of them. And then you read a great review you wrote and you think... Oh. So when I saw that Beirut was up against Girl Talk in Coachella's lineup, I made a mental asterisk to figure out how much I want to see Beirut. I knew I liked them, I knew I wanted to see [...]
