This list is a long time coming and a little later than I would have liked it to be, but I do not take lists lightly so I didn't want to rush it. For me 2011 was a great year in music. I have opened myself up and listened to a lot of stuff that I don't think I would have given a chance a couple of years ago. I also saw a fair amount of shows in 2011. Alexi Murdoch, The Decemberists, The Kills, James Vincent McMorrow and these are all albums I consider to have made up a [...]
Beirut's third full length album 'The Rip Tide' does not see Zach Condon divert wildly from the nostalgia tinged sounds he has offered on past efforts. Whilst introducing new ideas the bulk of this material builds on the Beirut strengths we knew and loved. Cougar scibe Jazmin added the album to her top 10 stating: [...]

Two thousand and eleven has been an odd year for me, and I think for music as well. Between acclimating to a completely different environment and being fully immersed in the music world, I foresaw a serious evolution and transformation of my music tastes prior to compiling my "Best of" lists. After the completion of said lists, it seems that not much has actually changed - not only in the last year, but the last five, when observing which names were included. To be honest, it was quite difficult to decide on 10 full albums I really [...]
Well, it's that time of the year again where everybody and they mamas drop a list of their favorite albums that came out this past year. I was actually pretty close to not putting together a... Read the rest on Speakerboxxx.com

Words and photos by Brendan My feelings about this show have fluctuated over the last week and a half. I was excited to go, despite not really knowing Beirut 's music that well, but then it was so crowded at the show, I couldn't enjoy myself. I left disappointed, more so with my inability to even understand why I didn't enjoy myself than with the performance itself. Then I got caught up in the end-of-semester grading whirlwind for a week and pretty much forgot about it until now. How have my feelings evolved? [...]
Welcome to our annual countdown of the 50 best songs of the calendar year. Songs must be from an EP, LP or demo released during 2011, no band may appear twice. Each post title contains a lyric from one of the ten songs to follow, a hint and a hook that stuck out clearly in this group. Today, we count down 20-11. 20. Kyla La Grange - "Walk Through Walls" In a hospital waiting room

2011 was a real chicken-and-egg kind of year in music. Was there really less amazing music or did everything sound a little duller because it was a difficult year for me personally? Was there less sonically interesting music in 2011 or was it because I cut way back on listening to music with headphones? Was there less originality or is it because we're so bombarded with music all the time that it just takes so much more to cut through the sheer volume? While it may have been for personal reasons, it did seem as though 2011 was [...]

Amazingly enough, 2011 has already come and gone, but with it came a slew of glorious, captivating records. From the return of veterans Bright Eyes , Wilco , and Death Cab for Cutie , to sophomore explosions from The Antlers , Girls , Bon Iver , and Fleet Foxes , and jaw-dropping debuts from Youth Lagoon , James Blake , You Won't , and Caveman , this has been one incredible year of music for us. Say what you will about this year versus the [...]

Ladies and gentlemen, we have arrived. I am sure you will have your opinions to placing certain songs so highly on my list...just remember, I am a loser with terrible taste in music. 10. You Won't - Who Knew These guys sort of burst onto the scene with a handful of really great songs. Straight out of Boston, if you get the chance to get your grubby nubbies any of their released tunes then do it. Here's hoping that their [...]

This list was an extremely easy one to do, however, like any lists, I'm sure I've left off more than I care to remember. All I had to do is go to iTunes and click on the songs I played most in 2011. POW! If it were only that easy. Here's a small sampling of my favorite songs of 2011 and I wish the rest of that M83 albums was like "Midnight City." Sigh. C=T Favorite Songs of 2011 Tracklist M83 Midnight City Fred Falke Aurora Cut [...]

Turntable Kitchen's December Mix isn't our usual mix. Instead of a heavy focus on new music, I highlight some of my favorite tracks from the past year. Unlike last year though, I didn't focus on digital-only tracks, but instead highlight some of my favorite tracks released during the year regardless of the format it was originally released in. I hope this will help keep your holiday travels jolly and bright. Turntable Kitchen :: The December 2011 Mix ( .zip file )(on Spotify ) 01. I Break Horses - Winter Beats [...]

The list. 20 songs that enhanced my life. Different from last year , here we have mostly short thoughts rather than stories and anecdotes. A playlist of the past 365 days. My soundtrack of 2011. ~~~ 20 • Beirut • Goshen We begin with a glorious piano and Zach Condon's long-lost voice singing about loss and a price paid. Then [...]

Foto: Krudo Beirut .

For the second of our 'guest' top ten posts we are pleased to welcome the finger-choppin' Banner to the roster with his first contribution to the end of year best of lists. " It's been a great year musically and especially as this year I became a dad. I'd like to thank Doctor Roddy and Chris T Popper for their steady supply of CDs this year and especially for little Max's mega mix from which I've selected some of my top ten tunes. I would like to have written a bit more about the songs but unfortunately I [...]

We all love lists, and we all love sarcasm. Though, I think its important to reflect upon the last year of music, I'm going to do so through the use of a list. It was a fantastic year full of awesome albums, and I'm going to count down a bunch of my favorites, and give you something to listen to while reading. 45. Beirut - Riptide Beirut - Santa Fe A much more accessible, hookladen, and easy to enjoy album was released by Beirut this year. This album will [...]
