What is the UMS you ask? Well that's a silly question. Many have called the Denver Post Underground Music Showcase the "South by Southwest of Denver." Originally a one day, four band gig at the Bluebird, this showcase has bounced between Bluebird and Gothic before finally moving (and exanding) to South Broadway in the historic Baker district. Otherwise known as the hipster herding grounds. Excerpted directly from the UMS About page: "At the UMS , the presentation of the music is as important as the music itself. It's the songwriter circle in the Persian rug boutique; [...]

There's a good bit of the Gershwin brothers in the folkstream, and for good reason: the best of their tunes are catchy, simple, and storied, just as the best folk is. Moreso, more than almost any other composers of popular song for the stage, the universal recognition factor of so much of their songbook marks it as folksong, or something near enough: owned by the culture-at-large, familiar on the tongue and the ear, versatile enough to take flight in the hands of the hundreds of artists and amateurs who have made the songs their own. [...]
Yesterday was the 15th Annual Westword Music Showcase and one of the best turnouts I've seen at this Denver event. A few days ago I posted a Special Edition Snobcast where I wrote an extensive preview about the bands I felt were highlights this year. This wasn't meant to diminish any of the other bands playing, it's just that in most cases I had already seen many of the other bands worth seeing. So now that the showcase is over and done with I'm sure you're wondering to yourself (or maybe even out-loud), "Hey Father Guido! [...]
http://kvdu.du.edu/ In a moment of highly deluded judgment, the fine folks at DU - that's right, the University of Denver, the fine institution with a gorgeous campus, high tuition, and a school full of smarty-smarts - invited the Donnybrook Writing Academy to drag our drunk asses into the studio for a radio takeover. And while we don't quite understand the technology, we shall be hosting a Donnybrook Fine Special of Societal Advancement on KVDU October 30th from 4-6 pm , and here's what it's turned into: -Five writers: Angora Holly Polo, [...]

I return from the warm and open arms of the Denver Post Underground Music Showcase this weekend with an invigorated and genuine excitement about the music that is being made in this fine state. I heard some incredible stuff. Even if you live nowhere near Denver, take a listen to what my weekend was like because there are acts that I feel could be nationally noteworthy right now out of the Denver scene. The festival was a screaming success on the sweltering hot streets. Even after going to about a jillion large-scale [...]
with Bad Weather California, Wentworth Kersey, Sorellina and the dancing Team Firefox Friday 18 July 2008, Hi-Dive, Denver by Linda Ruth Carter Cd release shows are always hold a little more excitement than any other. It's kind of like a birthday celebration. (New songs are born and here's this shiny document to prove it.) Friday at the Hi-Dive was definitely a celebration of Porlolo's second full length release, Meadows. This show was fun. If you read no further, just know that much is true. I've not kept it a secret that [...]
