Words by Tom Johnson In short and simple terms; Belle Mare are the reason why GoldFlakePaint exists. I don't mean them specifically; more that they embody exactly why running a site like this is worth the effort. I still remember everything about the first time I listened to them. Sitting at my desk on a grey and gloomy afternoon, looking out over the city that sprawls away from my window, and hearing this rich and haunting voice pour out of my shitty little laptop and simply stop time. It filled the room. [...]

While I am prone to a tearful outburst at the oddest of events I can’t say there was much in the way of moisture aggregation at the announcement of iTunes 10th birthday. Still completely mind boggled at how Apple have pulled off their biggest masterstroke given iTunes limitations. Lack of portability, hugely clunky software and an abject rejection of the rules of capitalisation. To that end I am forever on the lookout for alternatives and even though emusic certainly makes a good stab at it their catalogue is just too limited. Google Play is the new [...]

Discovering their Loving You Down single was the best thing that happened to us this week. Perfectly balanced, constantly inventive and crazily addictive, it's the kind of track that would take the world by storm if it had an established name alongside it. But that's why we're here I guess, and if you're reading this then you're one of the lucky ones, hey? We delved a little deeper into the world of Bells Atlas and we're now very pleased to bring you a full stream of the EP, which was released via Bandcamp [...]

Some songs are slow-burners, taking repeated listens to squirm their way into your head and heart. Some songs are instant. They just grab you from the off, shake themselves all over you and strut off again, leaving nothing but a longing gaze and a memory. Loving You Down from Oakland's Bells Atlas is most certainly the latter. The scrappy, scruffy percussion and the sumptuous layered vocals grab you straight away before a smooth-as-silk voice takes the reigns and guides the track through three glorious minutes of inventive instrumentation, stuttering rhythms and perfect, PERFECT, pop hooks. [...]

"The Bell" by Villagers , from the critically acclaimed second album, {Awayland}. The video was directed by Alden Volney and features a combination of animation and live footage. The performance footage was filmed and directed by Sebastien Escalante at Attica Audio in Donegal, Ireland, where the album was recorded.
Bucks County-bred singer-songwriter Bruno Joseph sounds like he spent more than a little bit of time with Bright Eyes' LP I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning lately. His new release as Former Belle, Cathedral, came out yesterday, and it's awash in the same rustic-yet-sensitive Americana that Conor Oberst was exploring in the mid-aughties. The music video ... The ability of music to transcend both time and space is a trait that doesn't warrant any investigation, or even, really, any discussion; it just simply happens. At a personal level, records can attach themselves to specific memories and therefore become intertwined with that period. On a broader level songs and albums can be very much 'of their time' in regard to the way in which they're recorded, or which genre's are prominent at the time (oh hello Britpop, etc). Occasionally though some music arrives that doesn't just ignore the whole time/space thing, it seemingly transcends everything; it hangs in [...]

Well, it's happening. All mid-July Pitchfork goers expect to see R. Kelly, Björk and Belle and Sebastian headline the festival. I'm just hopping Trapped In The Closet is heavily involved. Pitchfork Music Festival is July 19-21 in Union Park. Tickets are on sale now.

Pantha Du Prince , a German-based beat producer, has been releasing music for over a decade now so his interest in adding a group of bell musicians and naming them The Bell Laboratory speaks to his desire to think outside the box more than anything. Their original collaboration started in 2011, meaning Elements of Light has been a project for some time and the result is sonically delicate and robust. Throughout the forty-five minute album, Elements of Light feels [...]
