Lots of exciting things have been happening on the home front these past couple of months whilst we've been gallivanting around New Zealand(thus the lack of daily posts). Perhaps the most exciting event on the local music scene in 2011 was the Valentiger Front Man Show - which took place in our home studio Stone House Recording . The ever-so talented Michael Knorr has started to put together videos from the show - with the always impressive Peter Fox providing the audio. [...]

Minneapolis' Bella Ruse stopped by the Stone House earlier this summer to provide us everlasting smiles. The folk-pop duo performed four songs for this Halfway House Session. What an absolute treat!!! Of course would you expect anything less when the instruments used in the the recording process included a typewriter, glockenspiel and kazoo??? Most recently - they've recorded a Christmas EP 'Twas A Bella Ruse Christmas which is sure to supply you vast quantities of holiday cheer. [...]

BELLA RUSE p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica} Something has made me very very sad just recently… Whether you want to know what that is or not, you are going to find out by reading the next sentence. Bella Ruse's album, Kuhzoo, came out so late in the season it likely won't get the hype it deserves. It'll be a sleeper of an album for awhile, but it will get it's

Have had a handful of EP's and albums fall into my lap lately that fall somewhere on the periphery of my usual consumption, but each has a certain charm, the trio of favourites - one label supplied, one friend recommended and one stumbled upon have the common theme of a female vocal, if you're after rock n roll check back later at a later date, today we are in folk pop mode. I love South West Wales it's one of my favourite parts of the UK with it's [...]
I was introduced to Minneapolis-based indie pop duo Bella Ruse through their endearing debut EP. On December 13th the pair return with a new full length album Kuzoo. Bella Ruse's sound is the result of two equally strong forces: the charming vocals of Kay Gillette, and the near-perfect accompaniment of Joseph Barker. The thing that strikes you immediately is the engrossing sound of Gillette's

6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. I'm having a fight with America this morning - the relationship I have with her is certainly complicated. My county gave our Rep. seat to a home economics teacher instead of the man we've been letting run it for over 30 years. Though he's a Democrat in a strong Republican area, he's brought thousands [...]

Folk music will always have a warm spot in my heart. Music from Minneapolis, MN will always have a warm spot in my heart. When you put the two together you get heartburn! Ok not really but you do get this week's up and comer, Bella Ruse . Bella Ruse is a dynamic indie folk duo comprised of Kay Gillette and Joseph Barker, who creates magically delicious music. Don't believe me? Give the song below, "Dark Horse," a listen. If it is has got you feeling enthusiastic about Bella Ruse, you [...]
Something about this quiet Monday night has put me in a very appreciative mood; and the pluck of folky guitar strings is feeding my musical appetite even more than usual this evening as a result. My daily blog crawl has come out with some unusually organic products - aside from my usual hazy mix of electronic music, lo-fi and pop which TMW has seen a lot of recently, the music i've compiled for you this evening takes music back the basics in its truest sense - we're talking poetic female vocalists (think Rosie & Me), with the crisp guitar tones [...]

My girlfriend has great musical taste, and she's probably actually better than me at finding new artists. So the other day when she turned on a couple tracks by Minneapolis indie folk duo Bella Ruse I wasn't at all surprised how freaking great it was. "Push On" is delicate yet brave a la Heartless Bastards, while "The Heart of Everyone" is sweet and true and pushes gently toward whimsy. What a delight former opera singer Kay Gillette's gliding vocals are!-I'm sure we'll be hearing lots more about them. Read all about them at their Myspace [...]

Whoa baby! I'm throwing a lot of tracks at ya today! I don't know what's got into me lately; I'm blaming the extended winter here in Chicago. All these gloomy grey days and this fucking snow, snow, snow. I can't seem to get my blogging butt in gear. And I've got over 400 emails in my blog submission in-box. That drives me absolutely fucking crazy, ya know? So, I hate doing this, but I know you guys kinda like it because you get a bunch of MP3s and well.... I get to ease my conscience a bit by cleaning out [...]

photo by jason aten so far this whole "one random email" thing hasnt turned out too badly. thus far i havent been subjected to pure shit, which is good. maybe, i just know how to pick em by band/artist name, or maybe the music gods are just sparing me from having to write about pure shit. who knows? today's/this week's/this months one random email comes to you from the minneapolis folky duo, bella ruse . the duo is made up of singer kay gillette, who's got some lovely pipes, and guitarist joseph barker and [...]

The sweet nature of Bella Ruse is the bare simplicity of their folk-jazz style and the whimsical lyrics of lead songwriter, Kay Gillette. There also seems to be a heavy influence of Swedish pop music mixed with modern American folk pop. The Minneapolis duo are careful with their smile inducing tunes, it's kind of humbling how minimal they get and still create affective jazzy pop. Bella Ruse's Christmas album is currently available here as well as their breezy self titled EP . [...]
