"A band that has drawn a litany of comparisons– from Can and Radiohead, to Lake Trout and Tortoise, to Godspeed and Sigur Ros – Bellflur challenges genre-specificity. They thrive in lush space and musical grandeur just as easily as in odd time signatures, bare-boned harmonies and reticence". Perched on the edge between perfection and chaos, Bellflur seem to relish those split beats in time and dreamy bass adventures. Sure, the heady mixture easily overpowers your senses, ultimately becoming quite painless while reverting to mortal combat in the form of [...]

Sleep Bellum Sono reminds me of something nutty, like The Paper Chase or a stripped down Mars Volta. New album, Judge Us By How We Lived Our Lives, Not By How We Made A Living popping soon. Sleep Bellum Sono: "A House Of Spades Stands No Chance Against The Wind (Gambler)" Bellflur: “Grey Sparkle Finnish Pig” Tim Williams: "Murderous Air" Little Girls:"Growing" [...]
If you're currently in New York, this week's Friday Mixtape will probably see little love - why listen to something on record when there are thousands of bands, many of which are featured on this week's Mixtape, performing live, at a venue near you? But for everyone, hopefully this week's mix of new singles, remixes, covers, and mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out will help curb some of that jealousy. You know, the jealousy resulting from not being about to see the thousands of bands, many of which are featured on this week's Mixtape, performing [...]

Friday, October 23, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: I'm busy with the Austin Film Festival and an early Halloween party this weekend, but if I could I'd get out and see White Hinterland tonight, Dinosaur Jr. tomorrow and Art Brut on Sunday. Feel free to go in my place and report back. I was hoping to have some sort of dancey gem that would send you into the weekend feeling nice and light on your feet, but that's not really what you're going to [...]

Here ‘tis...the one thousand post mark (...AND some serious symptoms of carpel tunnel. Ow.) To celebrate this slightly auspicious milestone, we’ve got six of DC’s hottest bands who’ll be up in NYC next week, gigging and partying at CMJ. We corralled then the same way the folks at CMJ did— through their Sonicbids accounts—and all were please as punch to send us the low down on where they’re buying their own records from in the District o’ Columbia: True [...]

Looks like a preview of summer is heading our way, with highs getting close to 90 in some places. The unexpected heat is not going to keep the weekend show line-up from happening. It's another full weekend, so I'm going to have to split it up into two posts. This one will cover Friday and those that also hit other places after Friday. Kings of Leon from band's myspace Quite a few big name acts start things Friday and [...]
It is definitely Autumn. The weather is getting a bit cooler, kids are back in school and bands are out on their fall tours. It's the last hurrah down the beach. The Dewey Beach Music Conference starts tonight and runs through Saturday. With over 100 bands from all over the country at 7 different venues, it is sure to have something for everyone. The best part is all nighttime shows are absolutely free! Local acts playing that we have covered are Philly favs [...]

I love holidays that change the day of the week year to year. Having the 4th fall on a Friday, creates one huge weekend that starts Thursday and doesn't end until you stop partying on Sunday. Some may head to the beach (like me) and suffer through some crappy cover bands all weekend. Even though Philly is the city where our independence was declared, the pickings for a good show are light, but our nation's capital is happening, and there are a few shows elsewhere. So put down the fireworks and head to a show. Kicking it all [...]

Squaaks photo by Michael Alan Goldberg Not much going on this weekend in Philly and Baltimore/DC, only a few shows of note. Everybody must be having a good ol' time down Austin-way. So enjoy the weekend and make the best of it. Friday night, two local shows in Baltimore and DC are on the bill. Kadman is having a CD release show at the Metro Gallery with Rain The Shining , while Greenland and Bellflur team up for a show at [...]
