One of my earliest childhood memories is being taken to see Disney's The Jungle Book, and it remains one of my favourite films of all time. Imagine my surprise when I found this on the b-side of a CD single a few years back:- mp3 : Belly - Trust In Me Yup....the very same song that Kaa the Python sang as he hypnotised Mowgli prior to eating him. And if anything, it's an even more creepy
We can't let Tuesday pass by without a bit of time-traveling, so here we go back to ever-popular 1995. The film Tank Girl , based on the main character from a punk art British graphic novel of the same name was not that great a movie by anyone's standards and certainly not in the eyes of creators jamie hewlett and Alan Martin. The writing was terrible (not Hewlett's fault), and while I like Lori Petty, she was too dolled-up for the character (see real Tank Girl from Deadline , Sept. 1993), [...]

(I wrote the following piece last year on this date. The number of years has been updated to reflect the passage of time, but the rest of the sentiments still stand.) Today is the eighteenth anniversary of my mother's death. I knew I was going to make note of that here, but until a few moments ago I wasn't sure how. I debated typing out the full events of that day, since even the smallest details been permanently etched into my gray matter, but that seemed pointless. Yet replaying those small details in my [...]

A certain beagle/boxer/chow mix by the name of Adeline Random went for her annual physical today. Apart from some minor dental issues, she passed with flying colors. She’s a bit spazzy (having spent six weeks of her puppyhood living on the shoulder of Interstate 93), eats all the cats’ food if not watched like a hawk, playfully torments Oscar the pughuahua mercilessly, and thinks it’s great fun to whack her people with her big clomp paws, but she’s an extremely loving and devoted creature. My wife calls her “the Original Child,†as she was the first pet we brought into [...]

so in addition to foo fighters awesomeness the other night, there was also frank black . i wish i was cooler and could impress with my knowledge of the songs he played, but alas, i cannot. at least, however, i can say that i knew it when he played "where is my mind", the pixies song i posted the other day . it sounded good, but i have to say i missed kim deal's part (woooo ooooo). anyway, since i don't know much else about him, i'll have to go off on [...]

While going through some old CD's the other day, I came across a copy of Tanya Donelly's Lovesongs for Underdogs , which I haven't played in quite some time. After listening to it, I remembered why I so thoroughly enjoyed Tanya's music in all of its incarnations (Throwing Muses, the Breeders, Belly, and solo work). It's unfortunate that Tanya hasn't weathered the years (or the popularity / marketing game) quite so well as other female rockers such as Liz Phair. She certainly has made some valuable contributions to the world of music, and never pigeon-holed herself in any one [...]

Well, it looks like we have a go for a July 4th launch of Shuttle Discovery. There was some question due to a missing piece of foam insulation issue (not the first time). Apparently it will be monitored during the countdown and will be aborted if ice builds up. Also, NASA is saying due to the weather situation it is 60% go, 40% no go. You can read more about that here . The launch is set to go off at 2:38 pm and I will be watching from my back yard. Definitely [...]

Office etiquette. It’s a funny old game. I feel lucky to work in a very accepting office, musically speaking â€" I work with those who consider themselves fans of Frank Black , Marah , Sigur Ros , Four Tet , Belle & Sebastian , even the likes of Arto Lindsay and his experimental jazz nonsense. So I was thoroughly bemused today when events unfolded. I put on Belly ’s Star â€" a fine album, newly repurchased complete with digital copy-protection, hence the work-listening. After this, after checking nobody else had [...]
