Definition: caddywhompus (adj.) Crooked, uneven, broken, ass-backwards and sideways. ( link ) The New Orleans' freak pop duo aptly named Caddywhompus (which consists of guitarist Chris Rehm and Drummer Sean Hart) is probably what you'd imagine them to sound like. Their debut EP, Caddywhompus EP , is a short yet energetic burst that is over before you know it. At worst, it provides an opportunity to simply rock-the-fuck-out; at its best it's beautiful, chaotic, and energetic all at the same time. [...]

Ive really been getting into Washington label Carpark Records , thanks to some good recommendations. The label is home to some great acts like Ecstatic Sunshine, Dan Deacon and Beach House to name a few, but one Ive just recently discovered is the New Orleans band Belong . Their sound is a kind of fusion of the lush layered guitars of My Bloody Valentine with some of the epic, sweeping ambient synth of M83 (much like his Digital Shades vol. 1). This sets the tone for their sometimes desolate and course sound. Its the sort of music that [...]

On the last official day of autumn, here are four gorgeous ambient hymns for the season. I'll continue to post Songs for the Autumn retroactively because it's objectively the best season, and many songs that evoke it follow suit. Tim Hecker - October (Part 1) Tim Hecker - Song of the Highwire Shrimper Fennesz - The Other Face Belong - October Language

Sure, the best-of list is already out, but I would be remiss to not take this opportunity to admit missing a few pretty good recordings this year. New Orleans' Belong was one of them, and I stumbled upon said artist by way of a time machine. I was rummaging through a stack of old magazines when I found a copy of Arthur from the summer of 2006 - the one with Brightblack Morning Light on the cover and their interview where they talked about how rad they think nature is. I had read "Heavy Air" before, a much [...]

I'm going to act like I have to make a Top 10 list at the end of the year because this is a music blog and that's what music blogs do. I'll say that I'm doing this begrudgingly only because people love to read lists and it'll get lots of hits. You see, I don't really have an option at this point. It's fucking mandatory. But in reality, I love making lists and telling people what my favorite things are. So here they are. My top picks from 2008. (Disclaimer: Marijn came out in '07 but [...]
Even today, when you think about New Orleans one of the first things that will (most likely) pop into your head is Hurricane Katrina. So it was only fitting that when the New Orleans based duo Belong released their debut album October Language in 2006 it was seen by many as somewhat of a response to the event. Perhaps it was the context of the record combined with it's sense of richly fading sunlight casting dark and quickly lengthening shadows that made it so beautiful, perhaps not. But Belong has got a new [...]

Belong Same Places (Slow Version) 12" (2008, Table of Elements) Verdict = Only 14+ minutes, but still totally worth it Ambient drone duo Belong are having a fairly productive year in 2008 which, in and of itself, makes 2008 a great year for music. Same Places is their second limited vinyl only EP to be released in preparation for the sophomore follow-up to their amazing debut, October Language . Don't let the EP thing throw you off though because, just like their Colorloss Record earlier this year, Same Places [...]

Belong 's 2006 debut, October Language , was met with critical adoration and loads of praise. The album bleeds through your speakers using treated swells of white noise and fuzzy sheets of guitar wash/melody that would sweep fans of Fennesz and Lovesliescrushing right off of their feet. Earlier this year, the band released the 4-song covers EP Colorloss , a limited vinyl-only affair that eventually became available as a free digital download. Even though it's a covers effort, [...]

Belong - Same Places (Slow Version) (excerpt) Belong is one of the greatest bands ever. Not only do they craft some of the most beautiful music but they also love their fans. Same Place (Slow Version) , part of the Table Of The Elements Guitar Series, isn't due out until August 5th, and even then there will only be a limited number of copies. But the fine men of Belong decided to release the album digitally, for free. You can [...]

Both Matthew Robert Cooper and Belong have new releases coming out very soon. Like, 3 weeks soon. Belong has their Same Places (Slow Version) one sided 12" for the Table Of The Elements Guitar Series (check out the Pitchfork article for more info). The opposite side of the record will have a laser-etched image from UK artist Savage Pencil . Right now, CD Universe is taking pre-orders for those who live in the US. So if you want one (and why wouldn't you) you should do so [...]

Photo credit: ichie For years scientists have thought that whales only sleep with one side of the brain at a time. This was thought to be necessary in order for the whale – being unlike us a conscious breathing mammal – to be able to come up for air and stay on the lookout for any possible dangers. The idea behind this was that they never reach unconsciousness like we do while sleeping, but instead only shut down one half of the brain while the other half is still active. The two [...]

Belong Colorloss Record EP (02.2008, St. Ives) Verdict = Gorgeous Gauzy Pop Belong's 2006 debut October Language is an essential in the field of ambient drone. It was emotive as well as orchestral in its movements. It was distinctly and beautifully textured, and it was memorable. In a single, powerful swipe the duo practically erased any distance between themselves as newcomers and much more historied and adorned acts from which they descended like Fennesz, Tim Hecker and Eluvium. However, above all else, Belong's October Language was incredible because while being able [...]

I thought that my speakers were failing. Maybe the jack wasn't pushed in all the way. New Orleans duo Belong made a Barrett song more eerie. The full brunt of it lost somewhere in the stereo field. Belong, Late Night (Syd Barrett cover) Belong released their new ep, Colorless Record in February on St. Ives . download: Late Night (Barrett)
I'm as surprised as anyone to find myself still living in North Carolina. Without a doubt, one the main things that's kept me here for so long is the vibrancy of the poetry community around Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham and Greensboro. My coterie, the Lucifer Poetics Group, has been invaluable to my growth as a writer and a person, and when I leave this place, it's the one thing I'm truly going to miss. I salute these friends and collaborators, and in particular I'd like to salute three good friends in Lucipo who've published three outstanding books over the past [...]
A year has flown by since I last dropped a "five things" list here. So it's time for another list. And considering I've been consistently uncovering new music each month with my eMusic subscription, it seems fit to dedicate this go-round to music exclusively. These albums have been part of my soundtrack this winter. All tracks are available at eMusic, except for the first one which you'd need to grab from iTunes Plus which is their DRM-free wing of their music store. Enjoy! The Field [...]

Belong - My Clown (St. Ives 2008) Belong - "Colorloss Record" EP / St. Ives Valentine's Day this year is an excellent opportunity to spill (no pun intended) my love for Belong. It seems like there have been a lot of people doing this lately thanks to that tour-only CD-R that hit the web a month or so ago, and now this. But I tell you, October Language is hands-down one of the best records of 2006. There are many contributing factors for its notoriety - [...]
