Watch Lady Gaga and Sting sing 'Stand By Me' and 'King of Pain' in Las Vegas over the weekend.
Cover Videos Tribute to Prolific '50s Pop Songwriter Jerry Leiber.
The folks on the Proximal Records roster know how to make good-ass electronic-infused hip-hop. There is no doubt about that. But that's not all they're good at. Apparently, they're also pretty great at being generous, which they've displayed here with the free Beat Stew Vol. 3 compilation. It features 22 tracks from both cats on their roster and their close pals, which include Sahy Uhns , Matthewdavid , Beneker, Devonwho , BearClaw, and many others. Beat heads, this one's for you. Hit the skip to stream and download the compilation. [...]

Ben E. King : Don't Play That Song [ purchase ] Here's another original, one which I have not featured in my long-running series over at my place . More famously covered by Aretha Franklin eight years after Ben E. King's 1962 original, the song states this week's theme unequivocally: "You know that you lied, you lied, you lied, lied, lied, lied." Don't Play That Song was written by Atlantic supremo Ahmet Ertegün with Betty Nelson. Before Ben E. King, former singer of The Drifters, recorded the song, [...]

S he's still alive, and may she remain that way for years to come. For weeks, the media had been buzzing with reports that Aretha Franklin was suffering from pancreatic cancer (in late December several outlets even erroneously ran obituaries!), but several days ago, the Queen of Soul publicly denied that she has cancer. I hope that whatever forced her to undergo surgery on December 2 and cancel all of her concert appearances through May is not life threatening and that a full recovery is underway. Perhaps new music will be forthcoming, too, as [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Braving the second blizzard of the winter season, the audience at Tuesday night's Plan B show at Bowery Ballroom in New York brushed the snow off their shoulders and warmed up with the knowledge that some serious rap and soul crooning was about to hit the stage. It was also Plan B's stateside live performance debut, so anticipation was high and the man also known as Ben Drew did not disappoint. [...]

And this will be the final New York mix. There are still plenty of songs that I have not used, but 92 New York-related tracks should suffice. In fact, I'll add on eight tracks to round the number up to 100. The timeline on this mix spans 116 years, which surely is quite unusual as far as mixes go. So we have the U.S. Marine Band from 1894 and two songs from outstanding 2010 albums, by the wonderful Caitlin Rose and Ray Lamontagne. I owe the Ben Sidran track to reader Marivic (thank you). [...]
An elegant stroll through the Great American Songbook from an iconic voice
Soul music greats in concert.
Andrew Sky triples himself up in this splice-tastic rooftop video.
The Drifters topped The American singles charts fifty years ago this week.
I know, I know. I completely neglected this site, and the months without mixes were lazy. The excuse is that I started a new job, and although I continue to DJ at work, the format in which I do so has changed and makes it difficult for me to casually pull together selections over the whole month. Combine that with me inheriting a vintage record player/stereo, discovering that the coolest record store in L.A. is in my neighborhood, and picking up a copy of Peter Guralnick's Sweet Soul Music to feed my musical knowledge; I've been [...]
Led Zeppelin: Chapter 10.

Ben E. King: Stand By Me [ Purchase ] This is a great song, and a touching one that also manages to keep a good beat and be fun to sing along with. All winning elements that helped it get into the top 10 charts, not once, but twice, decades apart. The song was released in 1961 and hit #1 on the charts, but then in 1986 a movie by the same title was released and renewed interest in the song getting back into the top 10 once [...]

This has been been on my iPod non-stop... Yes, i've recently rediscovered my love for Royal Bangs. In the midst of rediscovering it i had a thought......"wouldn't it be cool to make a list of royal related bands?". So i did.. A Very Royal Variety ---------- 1. Queens Of The Stone Age - Do It Again 2. Port-Royal - The Photoshopped Prince [...]

Filed under: Spinner Interview Fifty years since Ben E. King left the Drifters to start his solo career, his hits are still being covered by everyone from ' American Idol ' hopefuls to Michael Bublé to U2 . And yet, throughout the past decade, the soul legend with the rough-but-tender voice has kept a low profile, singing in supper clubs and jazz lounges to audiences of connoisseurs. His new album, 'Heart & Soul,' reflects the intimacy of such gigs -- it's a small-group [...]
They even mix in a little "Stand By Me." Unreal.
