As you've probably heard, there's a new Lauryn Hill song . It sounds... well, it sounds like it was recorded in a hurry to pay off a tax bill, which is apparently exactly the case (unfortunately, the quickie release didn't save Hill from a three-month jail sentence ). The vocals and lyrics are decent enough, but the beat sounds like it was slapped together in GarageBand with deadlines in mind. Of course, Hill's not exactly the first artist to have to make a record under duress; here's a [...]

We've been big fans of Bob Weir's fantastic Weir Here since it debuted last year. The semi-regular web variety show, which is broadcast live from Weir's TRI Studios, has featured members of the Grateful Dead and its extended family swapping stories and performing a mix of tunes. During a recent episode, the former Bobby & The Midnights lead singer revealed that he will take the show on the road this fall, where he will be joined by Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Jonathan Wilson, Jay Lane (Primus), Jason Crosby and Jeff Chimenti (Furthur, RatDog), as [...]
FANS of modern day groups such as The Hoosiers, We Are Scientists, Scouting For Girls and other similar rock-band-playing-pop groups would do well to turn their attentions to the absolutely brilliant Whatever And Ever Amen. The 1997 peak of Ben Folds Five - who were a trio, by the way - and unmatched by Ben Folds solo output, the album has its fingers in many tasty pies, with tear-jerking ballads, tongue-in-cheek rockers and jazz-out improvs all the order of the day. Recorded on a budget lower than a midget limbo dancer - as testified to by the phone [...]

We interrupt our ongoing series on early 2013 Tribute albums to bring you this specially re-heated feature, originally posted April 1, 2008. As a culture vulture, I have a particular fondness for the iconography of Hip Hop and Hardcore Rap; as a fan of trope and politic, I've always admired the complex rhyme and rhythm they bring to the table. But I never really made a connection with hardcore rap as a cultural form. I'm an outsider on the streets; I can [...]

I don't know what's worse: that this video was filmed in a pixelated 240p or that nobody tried to trash talk Folds by screaming, "BRICK!" as he attempted to shoot. Total missed opportunity. It also looks like he's playing hoop in a PDX park, but that could just be me. Anyone have an idea where this was filmed? This was nearly as good as Mr. T's center ice wrist shot at the Blackhawk's game the other night. Sadly, the video seems to be scrubbed by the internet copyright trolls, but we'll always have this photo. [...]
Mika burst on to the scene a few years ago with a sugary pop masterpiece, Life in Cartoon Motion, and his joyful and colorful live shows, chock full of balloons, confetti, streamers and a giant pop band behind him. Now, he's on tour supporting his newest album, The Origin of Love, and he's taking a markedly different approach. Filed under: News , Exclusive , The Hit List Michael Stipe Successful touring musicians often live fishbowl lives -- the center of attention, gawked at, photographed. Now more than ever in this age of camera phones and instant uploads they rarely escape the public's gaze. Some of them turn the tables, picking up their own cameras and looking back-at their audiences, [...]

Slow Dakota - Our Indian Boy Sometimes, the most moving, meaningful art is produced in the aftermath of a significant situation, good or bad, and this is exactly how Slow Dakota’s Our Indian Boy came to exist. PJ Sauerteig, aka Slow Dakota , could never have guessed that his volunteer trip to India would go the way it did - the culture shock, extreme heat, and living conditions were overwhelming, causing him to return to the US. After arriving back home, Sauerteig began processing what [...]
Picture this: You're 12 years old and in the throes of a phase your mother unlovingly refers to as "the dark days." You listen only to A.F.I., whose lyrics you write in gothic calligraphy for fun. You think you've got the world figured out - from clever AIM away messages to how to find the things at Claire's that look like they came from infinitely more badass shelves of Hot Topic. One Sunday night, your friend invites you to a concert featuring 'some piano dude' at the arts center in [...]
BEN FOLDS FIVE, NATALY DAWN ( Roseland , 8 NW 6th) So! Ben Folds Five are coming to town, and opening for them is one-half of Pomplamoose. [ Pause. ] Okay, I had to take a minute to go get in a real-life argument with someone close to me about the perils of being yourself vs. the perils of trying to play along with the Kool Kids Music Klub. It was decided that I should say the following sentence, even if it makes people think I'm a doofus: I totally don't hate Pomplamoose. I thought those videos were [...]
The reunited '90s band has something new to say // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

"In the Fresh" is the debut single from newcomer artist Stroik. The playful yet snide, ebullient yet cutting "In the Fresh" is a song full of contradiction and juxtaposition. ""You're beautiful minding yourself / But they're watching you like hunter's prey / We're laughing at the funeral / And on the way back we're cradling camo" pretty cold, right? The tension and constant push/pull that exists between the track lyrically and the sunny indie pop of its instrumental and the adept execution of that tension makes for a definite standout listen. Release Date - House of Manners [...]
