Eef Barzelay is the maestro of Clem Snide, a band of folksy pop, alt.country rock, and wry suburban want. I'm an enormous fan of the band, particularly of Your Favourite Music and the more recent End of Love. The musicians are sensitive, skillful, and have scraped knuckles. They're prone to sudden bolts of joy, twangs that carry all the way down telephone wires. Eef's lyrics, meanwhile, like those of The Weakerthans' John K Samson or The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle, can be the sorts of things you'd want engraved over your door, or stitched into a welcome mat. Bitter, beautiful, [...]

it's funny, because i really didn't even intend for this to happen (it's reminiscent of when my vitamins and allergy pills ran out at exactly the same time), but i figure we're at about post #100 (assuming you take out the ones where i say i can't post, and you'll have to wait). so i wanted a post to say thanks. and it's (canadian) thanksgiving. and i'm rambling. but i think the rambling is what makes you all keep coming back. but anyway, i wanted to do something special. and while this may be way less special than what i [...]

First off, I'm an Elliott Smith freak. That said, there's an amazing site called elliottsmithbsides.com . I'm sure a lot of you have already heard of it, but for those who haven't, it lives up to its name- it's a bunch of Elliott's b-sides, demos, and outtakes- and it's a veritable gold mine for fans. The most recent leak is perhaps the best one yet, giving us four great songs recorded at the same time as the tracks that made From a Basement on [...]
This is DEFENITLEY one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time! Here we have Ben Folds on an Austalian radio/TV program called jTV covering "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service . It's amazing because the whole thing is recorded live and on the spot. Wow! Kinda kicks Sam Beam's (aka Iron & Wine) ass into the ground (; Update: Ugh. For some reason I can't embed the Youtube file, so here's a link [...]
sometimes you just don't want to get out from under the covers. we all experience it, don't lie. nobody wants to get up at the crack of alarm every day from their nice warm coccoon and trudge through their daily routine. nobody enjoys that first shock of cold air outside your cozy little bed. well, while you're emerging from the depths of slumber, take a listen to these covers; some old stuff we had lying around that you may or may not have heard, but that deserves a listen nonetheless. think of it as the morning [...]
I am a big fan of cover songs. There are many covers I love more than the originals, but many more I just love because of how much they are able to transform the original into their own. Some cover songs just seem natural and the only thing that's really different is that it is someone else singing. Other times the difference is immense, so much so that it may even make you re-think your feelings on the original (like how Tori Amos covering "Smells Like Teen Spirit" did to me). Perhaps the most [...]
It's been quite a while since the MOKB Covers Project and I've had lots of people send me tracks that were missed. I don't have them all, my inbox gets filled up pretty fast, but here are a few I managed to salvage... Susana and the Magic Orchestra - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) Susana and the Magic Orchestra - Enjoy The Silence (Depeche Mode) Die Art - Love Will Tear [...]
Holy shit.... this makes my day. A STUDIO COVER! I love this so fucking much. Ben Folds is so awesome... Turns out he brought in a few random drummers from Australia and just recorded this sort of spur of the moment... the video explains it better. Watch this video and then download the track. MP3: Ben Folds - "Such Great Heights" (Cover) Highly Recommended!!! [...]
yeah, apparently. one friend of mine that could claim to be Ben Folds' brother sent me this mp3 of the man covering one of the best indie music songs, maybe ever? it's extremely electronic, electronic sounding , that is, with instruments! and so incredibly different from almost anything i've heard him do, so be prepared. i'm told that he used towels inside the higher strings of the piano to make it sound like a synth. yeah, that's pretty much a direct quote. :::: for your [...]

first of all, i should say that, in a few days of rotation on my computer and ipod, these 3 songs have somehow become connected in my mind. i'm not sure if it's similar lyrical content (although i think i may be stretching it there), or if it's just that they fit together musically well, although i couldn't really see all three on tour together. regardless, this one's for some people. let's start things off with the admission that i am probably the only person who is not a huge fan of alexisonfire who still owns some of their swag. [...]

Lately I've stumbled across some really excellent covers... I'm sure this will be a recurring theme because I'm finding LOTS of great ones! And, because I'm such a giver, I'm going to share them with YOU, gentle reader. (But because I'm lazy, I urge you to seek out the bands yourselves without me having to post links. I'm sleepy, I'm sorry.) FLATTERING IMITATIONS THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH -- Don't Fear the Reaper So great. I love this. [...]
Just a couple of little things that have tickled me in recent times. The first of which is M. Ward's Chinese Translation, in magical YouTube video format, which I saw on Each Note Secure. Official or not, I just don't know, but it's a charming little animated piece from directors Joel Trussell and Eric Johnson, all sepia tones and olde-worlde Chinese stylings. It really brings out the song, for me

Did I Step On Your Trumpet með Danielson er eitt af skemmtilegastu lögum ársins. [...]
Growing up in Rhode Island I watched tapes become compact discs, CDs become mini-discs, mini-discs fail and when I went to college I learned about mp3s, Napster and Discrete Dynamical Systems. This all becomes important (except for the Discrete Dynamical Systems) when I direct our discussion to how a young ruffian from Rogue's Island found out about new music when he was in his formative years. 1. He didn't. 2. He listened to what was on the radio (or MTV). See #1. 3. He listened to what his older brother played (Corrosion of Conformity, Megadeth, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, [...]

It was just your average festival â€" a three-night fête of eclectic music, community, guitars, farms, drugs, nature, sun(burns), port-o-potties, people-watching, and good vibes. Sureâ€"as Beck’s guitarist notedâ€"it “smelled like hippiesâ€; and yes, the weather was fairly intense â€" in place of last year’s omnipresent rain, much of Bonnaroo 2006 was humid with temperatures in the 90’s, no wind, and a bitch of a sun. But with the bad times come the good; to see all this music in one place at one time, there must be some sacrifice. Me, I’ll take melanoma ten years down the road, so [...]

I'm not usually one for cover songs, especially when they were recorded live. Bands often fail to improve on the originals, or the crowd talks incessently because they're not familiar with the choice. On occasion, however, a band picks a song for which they're well suited or an artist pays a unique tribute to one of his/her forebearers. Most of these songs have been around a blog or two, but having sharpened up the audio and cut out some of the chatter/introductions for my own collection, I decided to share. So here's a yousendit dump of some covers that I've [...]
The cover version challenege is back after a week off. This week's challenge is an all Canadian one, where both the original and covering artists are Canadian. But first, here are the answers to the last challenge: A - The Killing Moon by Nouvelle Vague, originally by Echo & The Bunnymen B - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me by Violent Femmes, originally by Culture Club C - This Must Be The
And to noone's surprise, the number 1 song is by... I'm in a bit of a quandry here...I would LOVE to share "Take a Bow", but I got it off a leaked CD, and the source of that leak has now been plugged. Technically, what I would be doing would be a tad bit...er...illegal. And I don't wish to get my site shut down due to the overzealous efforts of some hard up record company wonk. So here's what I'll do. [...]
