Tom Morello is no stranger to the world of using music in the context of social and political activism, both as the guitarist for Rage Against The Machine and by releasing folkie, Woody Guthrie-inspired protest tunes under the moniker The Nightwatchman . Earlier this year, Morello released his third solo effort World Wide Rebel Songs , an album whose cover is a nod to Phil Ochs' Gunfight At Carnegie Hall . For World Wide Rebel Songs, Morello eschewed the guy and guitar approach of his previous efforts, in favor of a full backing band. Morello [...]

Neil Young's Ohio, made famous by Crosby Stills Nash & Young, is a protest song referencing the horrible events at Kent State University on May 4th, 1970 that left four dead and nine injured. Recorded just three weeks after the fact, it was pressed to single and rushed to radio stations with the B-Side Find The Cost of Freedom. The Contestants: Artist : Anders Osborne & Big Chief Monk Boudreaux Album : Bury the Hatchet [...]
Since 1985, Neil Young has hosted his annual Bridge School Benefit , bringing together an assortment of artists for a two-day festival that supports the Hillsborough, CA-based school, which assists children with severe speech and physical impairments. This year's inclusion, set to take place this weekend at The Shoreline Amphitheatre on October 22-23rd, marks the event's 25th anniversary, and to celebrate Young has tagged the likes of Beck, Foo Fighters, Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Eddie Vedder, and many more. However, unlike previous years, the organizers are ensuring millions witness the event. To start, Saturday's festivities will [...]
"White Wash, the documentary, is a film exploring the complexity of race in America through the eyes of the ocean. Examining the history of "black consciousness" as it triumphs and evolves into the minds of black surfers, we learn the power of transcending race as a constructive phenomenon. The story is narrated by the legendary, Grammy Award winner Ben Harper (Fistful of Mercy, Relentless 7, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals) along with Tariq "Blackthought" Trotter of the Grammy Award winning hip hop group, The Roots whom also originally scored the film." Whitewash

Amos Lee - Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight "and sometimes we forget what we got who we are, and who we are not" I like soulful songs, I do try to be more diverse with this blog, but you probably can tell by now what my particular taste it. I love to have a good time, and go out and dance of course, so you'll see a good share of dance/electro tunes, but my heart is most at ease with the slow tunes. Even for bands that don't focus on the [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Thrice w/ O'Brother, Moving Mountains, La Dispute Sunday, October 9 The Masquerade - 695 North Avenue in Atlanta 30306 Admission $17 / Purchase Tickets Depending on your point of view, Thrice can be one of the most inventive bands performing today or one of the most exasperating. At times, the result of their work has been brilliant ( The Artist and the Ambulance and Vheissu come to mind). At others, it's been staid and [...]
Hoping to snag a good spot to see Ben Harper, I arrived early enough to catch the opener, Grace Woodroofe. I immediately regretted this decision once I had procured a spot and was able to watch her "perform". Deceived by her deep mature voice, her stage antics were more age appropriate to that of a teenager singing into a hairbrush in her bedroom. Not knowing the proper etiquette for a musician on stage, she chose to imitate the idea of the rock star, by thrashing about with her hair covering her face, and then immediately realizing that this was impractical [...]

The Album Leaf is a solo project founded by Jimmy LaValle, whose musical style emulates many of its Sub Pop counterparts. The California-based post-rock band's latest album, 20102s A Chorus Of Storytellers , is a mellow affair that thrives on synth, ambient noise, and occasional acoustic guitar. Each song has a decently long build up and instrumental layering that should intrigue any fan of the post-rock genre; the lyrics, on the other hand, are rarely complicated (lines such as "One day we began/To fly again/And now we start/To fly and then" are pretty much par for the [...]

Based on the response to the lineup post on the annual Bridge School Benefit (set for the weekend of Oct. 22-23, 2011 again in Mountain View, CA), it's pretty clear that this event is something that people really look forward to every year. A lot of folks are very loyal to the fantastic cause that is the Bridge School and it's great to see all these amazing artists sign on, year after year. The team behind the good cause just recently announced that they're releasing a 3 DVD and/or 2 CD collection [...]
Each year, Neil Young opens up his Rolodex (and it's a mighty impressive one) and calls on all his rock star friends to play his charity concert, the Bridge School Benefit . With the shindig celebrating its 25th anniversary this October , Young and the folks behind the event have compiled the concert's best moments in a three-DVD, two-CD set aptly titled The Bridge School Concerts 25th Anniversary Edition. The DVD release includes performances from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Fleet Foxes, James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, Devendra Banhart, and a plethora of other big-name acts. [...]

Tom Hamilton & American Babies | photo by WHITperson This week in NYC Live Music is an interesting one, with a couple notable heavy-hitters and a few solid small-club shows... After their Saturday night slot as the musical guest on SNL , Radiohead decided to stick around town for two, now-sold-out shows at the Roseland Ballroom; definitely a tough ticket due to the venue size, so here's hoping you were one of the lucky NYers who scored tickets. If not, there are plenty of [...]
