Hi, friends. This year I'm taking a slightly different approach to the State Of The Blog Address. Gone are the formalities (the Photoshopped pictures of VIPs, the interruptions for self-aggrandizing applause breaks, etc.) and getting right down to specifics. This is 2013. It's time for a change, and in the words of the immortal Sam [...]
Ben Reynolds is a guitarist who's worked with bands such as Vibracathedral Orchestra and Sunroof. Holy Spirit is taken from his 2008 album Two Wings , where he heads into the unfamiliar territory of solo steel string acoustic. He bends the strings so much in places that it's practically a microtonal piece, wandering between raga-like passages and fragments which seem like they're about to erupt into desert blues. But overall it's a (mostly) still and contemplative improvisation, and well worth discovering. Ben Reynolds - Holy Spirit [...]
Anyone else use the Satellite Eyes app for their laptop? It's pretty cool. Finally, my Codeine 'When I See The Sun' box set arrived yesterday. I listened to the remastered 'Frigid Stars' (meh! sounds about the same!) and the outtakes/demos disc (great acoustic version of "Pea" and a couple of songs that would have sounded [...]
Oh, hello. I didn't see you come in. Well, let me roll back up my cock, put some clothes on, and then we can communicate like two adult humans. There, that's better. Oh, what's that? You're watching Girls? Well, I'll come back later. Here's a mix tape for you when you tire of that garbage. [...]
Wow. What a weekend. I'm sure you're all out getting loaded, but some of us have to work tomorrow. I guess that's why they call it Labor Day, amiright!? Hi, I'm Evan. You might remember me from such drunken blog posts as this one I'm writing right now. Also last night's post and most of [...]
The Pins is a five piece indie rock out-fit from Hertfordshire in England. Aaron Page (Vocals), Ben Reynolds (Guitar & backing vocals), Danny Stillwell (Guitar & backing vocals), Dale Ricciardi (Bass) and Adam Essoof (Drums), have been playing up and down the country and across in to Central Europe over the three years since they played their first local club gig. The Pins The band play in a crowded space, and it is a testament [...]
Last night's screening of The Room was pretty ridiculous. Crazy kids with handles of hard liquor, weed, and Costco-size boxes of spoons to be hurled back and forth for the duration of the film. It was about as good an experience as I could have hoped for newbies Tom, Nicci and Troy. You can't live in Los Angeles and ignore this shit. It's pretty much the most amazing moviegoing experience that has ever existed. Even if, at 27, you feel like the oldest person in attendance. I updated the official Swan Fungus concert calendar…so, there's that. [...]

Oh my God, you guys - I almost had my photograph taken with Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse tonight. I was literally the very next person to tap Carlton on the shoulder and say, "Can I take a photo with you?" But he said, "Sorry, I have to go do something in the back" just before he and Damon darted out the rear exit of Gallery 1988 on Melrose in Hollywood this evening. I swear to God, there was no one else even remotely close to me as I was set to approach the pair and introduce myself. It was [...]

ZAK RILES (of GRAILS, from Louisville) R. KEENAN LAWLER (from Louisville) NATE SALSBURG (from Louisville) MIKE TAMBURO (from Pittsburgh, PA; on the New American Folk Hero label) BEN REYNOLDS (from Glasgow, Scotland; on the Tompkins Square and Strange Attractors Audio House labels) at the SWAN DIVE 921 Swan Street 8 PM, $5, 21 and over ZAK RILES is [...]

Ben Reynolds is most famously a member of Glasgow's prog-folksters Trembling Bells (along with Alex Neilson and Lavinia Blackwall), whose new album on Honest Jons is produced by none other than Joe Boyd. On How Day Earnt Its Night, released on the estimable Tompkins Square, he extricates his guitar lines from that band's extraordinarily [...]

God help me if the next two weeks are anything like today was at work. I'm going to be such a miserable piece of shit. I'm trying to think positively about my temporary schedule change, but it's so depressing. I might as well be one of those cult goons standing on a street corner near the "Dream Center," handing out lemonade to passing cars. That's how useless I feel. When I took a short 15-minute break today, I found myself walking across the street for a soda, and I had a vision of myself five hours later crying over a [...]
Glaswegian psych/drone mainstay Ben Reynolds has been well known for his contributions to such luminaries as Ashtray Navigations, Vibracathedral Orchestra and Sunroof!, but he’s never really been known for the tender touch of acoustic strings until now. Though he’d always used bits of clean string work in his pieces it wasn’t until the release of Two Wings that Reynolds’ name could really be said in the same breath as Stephen Basho Junghans and Sean Smith. His fluid, circular pieces on the album are sparse but decidedly heartfelt. Though his works have often conveyed very strong emotions, they’ve never [...]

Last night was so embarrassing I won't even describe how I spent it. Sure, I left the apartment at five in the afternoon and didn't return until after 4am, but the hours in between were so utterly unremarkable I feel it could actually damage my reputation if I recounted the details for you. I awoke to my phone ringing at noon. There were television characters making cameos in my dreams this morning. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or [...]
Another week has ended. A new week is set to begin. I hope your weekends went swimmingly. Maybe some of you even swam somewhere? The weather sure has been warm enough, right? I don't really know, I'm just saying that. For all I know eighty-five percent of the country could be covered in snow. Well, since you asked...my day was nice. I went shopping this morning for groceries and toiletries, then I had a good healthy lunch, and then I spent the afternoon joking around with Steve. We walked down the street drinking matching pink smoothies. It was [...]
I'm exhausted. The nights are getting later and the days ahead are filled with arduous tasks that will demand my full attention. There's no sense in sharing all the gory details. It's quite inconsequential, really. You're just hear for the music anyway. RULES for the uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly compilation for your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not [...]
