Just a quick one today as I have been a bit 'meh' lately on getting my bloggin on. One thing that recently got me out of my funk (or is getting me out of my funk) is the series of Sunday live performances in Vancouver arranged by Slowcoustic favourites The Sumner Brothers . For The Sake Of The Song Sundays is my kind of gig, if you are in the area this weekend, you should go. Stripmall Ballads will be playing for Christ's sake (pun intended). For those familiar with the Cormac McCarthy inspired tales Ben Rogers unleashed on his fantastic EP a few years ago, finding out he was a huge ATDI fan is probably pretty shocking on first glance. Obviously, nothing on that EP seems to match the intensity the post-hardcore band unleashed on the masses in the early 2000s or indicate it would be in Ben's wheelhouse. But "Invalid Litter Dept." - an understated gem that challenged society to open their eyes to a very real problem - was a stark example [...]
For the regular readers of YCD, this name may ring you a bell but the picture. Yop, Ben Rogers is a new member in the bearded songwriter family. But far beyond this pilosity detail, Ben Rogers got 2 new tracks which both are on a heavy rotation in my itunes library : the really catchy 'Criminals' & the Dylan-like 'Born to Move'. This guy is as discrete as talented ; I hope the canadian music blog squad could catch him live and grab some more information about an upcoming release... In the meantime enjoy the tunes... [...]
Chat Room Pub barkeep Ben Rogers (on the left in the inserted picture, with owner Brad Hensarling) just updated the schedule for the bar and occasional music venue. Booked so far for 2009 are headline... Continue reading "The Chat Room Pub Announces 2009 Shows" >
I've been listening to the songs of Ben Rogers for the last six months. And no matter how good are the brand new songs flowing from this blog, I'm returning to Ben Rogers. Everyone always asks me why I always write about the past or set my stories in the past. Truth is, I can't relate to anything today: computers, television, even the wars we're fighting. It's like I always say: "out with the new, in with the old." That's not to say I'm oblivious, I'm just not finished with the past and I'm in no [...]

Seriously... Road tripping is second only to Road House-in; Swayze rocks. We left Vancouver and made it to Revelstoke after a detour through Oliver wine country. Ten hours driving, photos, AM radio - you know the deal. Tomorrow we have to hit Jasper, Banff, Lake Louise, and The Hoodoos. Basically we are repping the hell out of Alberta. All we need is some Mad Cow and an old skool Jofa Helmet. Anyway, here are a few of the songs that made the time pass easily, and some of Nic's photos. Side note - it's about 30 [...]

On the surface, Vancouver's Ben Rogers shouldn't be an artist that grabbed me so easily. I mean, he sings slow burning epic delicate country folk songs with a comfortable warble and some tried and true subject matter. When you consider I'm trying to digest the new Plants & Animals and Hilotrons records and working with Shane to pick songs for the New Brunswick compilation project, it's shocking to me that Ben's soon-to-be released record is the one increasing in play count. But really, it only takes a few listens to see how this [...]
Last night reaffirmed why I love music. While that horribly cliché and overused statement may sound a dime a dozen to all you skeptics, Mark Berube 's return to Vancouver last night was an interactive experience that really made you feel like you were part of something special. It shouldn't be surprising, as Mark is a natural performer who really embraces the live setting and tries to give back to the audience. Whether it is cameos, sing-alongs or cartwheeling fans and friends, Berube always gives you something you can't get from listening to his record on the way home [...]
