Hooray! We love when our favorite groups make an appearance when new music hits stores every Tuesday and we can particularly say that for our Scottish friends, The Twilight Sad . Their new EP this week Here, It Never Snowed. Afterwards It Did is a stunning follow up to 2007's Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters . Also sitting on the edge of our listening grasp is My Morning Jacket's much talked about Evil Urges. There has been nothing but praise for the group since their single was available [...]

It's been 9 months since the first installment of Blankets , and we're long overdue for a mix in general. So I whipped this mix of covers into shape for you to rock while you're out and about enjoying the weather. Great stuff coming up this week including a preview of the amazing Chris Merritt's upcoming double-LP and the Best-of-2008-so-far lists! 1. Yael Naim - Toxic (Britney Spears) [ mp3 ] 2. Deftones - No Ordinary Love (Sade) 3. Miracle Fortress - Digital Love (Daft Punk) 4. Chris Walla - Shattered Dreams (Cutting Crew) 5. [...]

Arriving early for the Plants and Animals show at Mercury on a very wet Friday evening, I was fortunate to catch the majority of opener Ben Sollee's solo set. A "folk cellist" (my term, hence the quotation marks) from Louisville, KY who also performs with the Sparrow Quartet alongside Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn and Casey Driessen, Sollee's plaintive and heartfelt performance was the perfect antidote to having just been pummeled by near-tsunami conditions. Besides, he absolutely shreds on the cello ( and I'm jello baby ). Well it turns out Sollee just [...]

As stated here and here , I am loving Ben Sollee's album " Learning To Bend ". It comes out in less than a month. Comparisons to Andrew Bird are inevitable as he is a string player and has a mellow voice. The album is chalked full of great songs, great instrumentation, great lyrics, it's just freakin' great. Sollee is part of the Sparrow Quartet but he's finally rockin' out a solo effort coming at you in June called Learning To Bend ! I dig his soulful jazzyvocals over this bluegrassy folk stuff made unique with his cellos all over the tracks. He was one of NPR's Top 10 Greatest Unkown Artists of 2007! You need to get the album and hear what he has to say. He has excellent songwriting skills including topics of politics. He has an attitude to empower people, there's hope in it, and it's got [...]

I'm not sure why more people aren't all over this young cellist from Louisville. Ben Sollee is probably better know for playing in The Sparrow Quartet (Béla Fleck's four-piece), but his solo work is not to be overlooked. He combines deft cello work (lot of plucking and some percussive bow work) with great instrumentation and a soulful voice that hits you with the honesty of Amos Lee . From the opening notes of his new record - Learning to Bend - he ponders love, the government, the state of the country he calls [...]

Ben Sollee is a cellist who plays in The Sparrow Quartet (Abigail Washington, Bela Fleck and Casey Driessen). His solo album – Learning to Bend – will be released June 10. But to tied us over until then, he'll be releasing a two song EP – If You're Gonna Lead My Country – in May featuring the song below. The EP is Ben's take on the current political climate. Ben reminds me [...]
Ben Sollee "A Change is Gonna Come" (Sam Cooke cover) Usually when a record label sends me a track to promote, I download it and forget about it for a while. Especially if the word "jazz" is anywhere in the press release. But even jaded ol' jazz-fearing Liza has a heart that will melt via R&B-influenced bluegrass and a smooth-voiced cellist with glasses, So I'm posting this nearly immediately. I'm a human being here, people! Brand New "Oh, Comely" (Neutral Milk Hotel cover) This is a [...]
Get your hands on Paralyzed , another great song from Elf Power 's In A Cave. Enjoy singer-songwriter Ben Sollee 's revisiting of Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come . Languorous, yet heavy guitars await you on Foot Foot 's eclectic Trumpet . There's something quite enticing about Ghost In The Trees by Thee Oh Sees . We're Through [...]

When Sam Cooke recorded "A Change is Gonna Come" back in 1963, the civil rights movement in America was slowly making progress after decades of setbacks. Change was in the air, for sure, but it wasn't inevitable and it wasn't going to be easy. A song like Cooke's, then, inspired with its promise of something better, it's urgent belief that, as Martin Luther King once said, "the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice". Cooke's song promised that change was on the way - it offered hope. [...]
Other than for Wax Fang and the Velcro Pygmies (never thought I would put them in the same sentence), I have never been that interested in the Hard Rock Cafe on 4th Street. Until Now. This March and April, they are stepping it up and are bringing in some great performers. Brett [...]

I really dig this poster done by Circle One Design. Ben Sollee - A Change Is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke Cover) Ben Sollee - A Few Honest Words

Every year I make a shameful admission: I watch American Idol. I blamed it on my wife out of insecurity, but I can no longer hold her responsible as I shout at my television when Simon, Paula and Randy eliminate my favorite contestants. Every season I cringe when I hear teenagers murder classic R&B or Motown songs that I once loved. I'm sure Sam Cooke has been turning in his grave for years because "A Change Is Gonna Come" might just be the most slaughtered song on American Idol since its inception. Ben Sollee is not a [...]
Each week we choose five songs that're more hit than miss, five songs that pack maybe just a wee punch in the grand scheme of things, a five-some that tickles our ears enough for us to say "Oh yeah, that's nice, that's the spot," without taking us to climax. Sure, call them weekly leftovers. We call them Friday's Grab-Bag. [MP3] James Hill - It's My Day Seattle's James Hill released a great EP last year called World On Fire! from which [...]
