by teepoo Born and raised in Ontario the now Montreal based singer-songwriter Ben Wilkins shows both his classical and jazz training in his songs. I've heard a ton of guitarist singer-songwriters lately but here's a pianist. That doesn't mean his songs aren't lush though. Soup For One starts off as a lovely ballad with bass, piano and Ben's lovely voice. It slowly grows to include things such as strings and other voices. Looks like it became more than just Soup For One eh? Lame [...]

Ben Wilkins "Ben Wilkins" Ontario-born Ben Wilkins was already a well-rounded musician, having studied classical music at Montreal's McGill University and spent his post grad studies in Shanghai, China, when he began working with musical producers Pascal Shefteshy and Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan, Rufus Wainwright) to put together his debut album. The warm classical pop sound permeates most of this album, but the disjointed "Opening" has a mix of indie jazz percussive effects, piano and classical strings contrasting Ben's clean vocals. It sounds like he has thrown everything but the kitchen sink into the mix to let us [...]

I've been hitting up Canada's Ben Wilkins for more songs ever since the 'Back of My Head' EP. Finally the new self titled debut album is out and you can it here right now. Thanks to Ben, I've been listening to the album over and over. Definitely one of those albums where each song holds its own and you don't have to hit the skip. Track to track, Ben's flexes mad piano jams with lots of instruments all over. The EP tracks are all on the new album but some of the arrangements have changed. Gotta [...]

Last week a softball (that I didn't catch) hit my glove then grazed my lip and took some BBQ flesh with it to the ground. It mad hurts to eat, any suggestions? Luckily listening to music has nothing to do with the mouth. Straight to the ears. Here's a handful of great tracks I've been listenin' to while waiting to exhale. First up we got our friends Princeton with a sweet new single to give you a taste of what they got coming up. They're also playing some shows [...]
Ben Wilkins has a wonderful new EP out and I know everyone is thinking it in the back of their minds-he sounds like Ben Folds! Okay maybe it's just me but it's a serious compliment otherwise. His new EP is one of my favorites for 2011. Every song hits a sweet spot in my ears (you'll hear soon). The Canadian's piano pop sound and lyrics are getting lots of rotations and we expect a ton of good stuff in the future. PRESSURE! Just kidding! Keep givin' us the good stuff! The [...]
Ok, so right before I sat down to start writing I managed to really burn the beejayzus outta two of my fingers which really makes typing painful and cumbersome. So, I'm gong the short but sweet on these three. All of them deserve much lengthier write ups but I'm leaving it up to you on this one. Ben Wilkins There is something really delightful about this track. In fact the entirety of Ben Wilkins' music is rich with good energy. Oh Canadians. [MP3] Through To You [...]

Today's song is "Through to You" by Ben Wilkins . This song is off the Canadian singer/songwriter's first self-released EP Back of My Head . It began with the recording of the EP, for free, in the luxurious confines of producer Pierre Marchand's (Sarah McLachlan, Rufus Wainwright) studio. Listen below and for more information check out Wilkin's official website , MySpace , Facebook , and Twitter pages. Get this song and all the rest on his debut EP now on iTunes ! "Through [...]
Most people know Ben Folds as a sort of goofy troubadour (or one of the hosts of The Sing Off), mixing a certain brand of irreverence into his piano-driven pop/rock. And while that's true, Folds' best work has never really been his humorous songs - at least to me. His best songs are the ones...

Ben Wilkins brings his pop/indie style right out of Canada. Born in Ontario and would move to Montreal to study music. He focused on the Trumpet, but it was not his thing. Instead, he took as much knowledge of whatever he could like composition, arranging, singing, theory and jazz harmony. He also spent countless nights sneaking into the piano studios to write his own songs. Producer Pierre Marchand (Rufus Wainwright, Sarah McLachlan) agreed to record Ben's debut EP Back Of [...]

The other day I came across an artist by the name of Ben Wilkins. If you don't know him, just wait, you will. As a product of Ontario (represent), Wilkins moved to Montreal at the age of eighteen for music studies at the university of McGill. While majoring in the Classic Trumpet in university, it is evident that his musical capabilities spread far beyond the instrument. Did I mention, that besides being incredibly musically inclined, he has a set of pipes on him that may just blow you out of the water. To be [...]

With the scent of fresh paint in the air after a brand new launch of, well, just about everything, it seems we may have a brilliant newcomer to the Canadian pop music scene. Ontario-raised and Montreal-residing Ben Wilkins released his new EP, "Back Of My Head" just last week to an unsuspecting global online audience. While Wilkins brings a certain degree of familiarity in this piano-based pop delight, there is something a bit more distinct and unusual about his music [...]

This has the potential to be a regular Friday thing; a desk clearing edition of music I wish I had more time to talk about, but simply don't. No more 500 word think-pieces (I can hear you all saying, thank god), simply a quick descriptor and a free track. Work for you? Works for me. Ketch Harbour Wolves - One of my favorite discoveries in the last few years. The unique sound is an almost rural recklessness meets big city alienation and loneliness in [...]
