I always wondered what "RIYL" stood for and finally decided to look it up. I always tried to make it mean "right up your alley," but I knew that wasn't right. Well, it means "recommended if you like," which makes a lot more sense! That's not to say I'll be using it much, mainly because I'm really bad at making those kinds of associations between bands, but at least now I understand what it means when other people use it. God bless google. Anyhow, I [...]

The amount of funding being awarded to the independent and small label bands in Canada is pretty impressive. You constantly hear about people like The Swiss (@polarismusicprize) or something like the Verge awards raising cash to help support the arts and in a time where the government is doing the exact opposite, it's the very tiny silver lining in a very large dark cloud that constantly pours down on musicians. For BC emerging artists – not exactly sure what that term implies, especially when one of the nominees has been grinding for 10 years – the [...]
"let's just stay here" kam mitte oktober auf mint records heraus: carolyn mark - all time low am 24.11. erscheint "big deal. what's he done lately?" und wir krachen uns schon einmal ein wenig warm (wird es plagiatsvorwürfe geben?): brimstone howl - suicide blues "sunset/sunrise" ist der aktuelle output der band aus seattle und erschien auf hardly art , wir hören [...]

Greetings, the YG crew are hitting the road. It's simply unfair that only the eastern cities have experienced Young Galaxy recently. Now they are taking the show to almost every city in Canada. I guess we can thank The Decemberists for making the rock opera cool again. Members of Blood Meridian, Black Mountain, Lightning Dust, Pink Mountaintops, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Limb Lifter, Bughouse 5, Bend Sinister, Fan Death, The Mohawk Lodge and Bison all contribute to the endeavor, which you can listen to here .

Julie and I started working on a song today, tentatively titled Happy Friday. So far, we have "It's Fridayyyyyyyyyyy" down on paper; We will keep everyone posted on where this goes. I've got a great track to close out the work week this afternoon from the Vancouver progressive/indie-rock band Bend Sinister . Since forming in 2001, the band has put out 4 releases, including their sophomore full-length release Stories Of Brothers, Tales Of Lovers in October of 2008 ; The Same Things can be found on said release. On a side-note, Bend Sinister played the Sled Island [...]
My first exposure to Bend Sinister was a few years back at a party hosted by Patty C . It was quite the evening, and although my memory of their set is quite fuzzy, they sure have changed since then. Comprised of Dan Moxon (vocals/keys/guitar), Joseph Blood (guitars), Henry Alcock White (guitar/vocals), Joel Meyers (bass) and Jason Dana (drums/percussion), Bend Sinister has come a long way from playing small clubs in Kelowna. On Stories of Brothers, Tales of Lovers , they are a band with a distinctly vintage feel, utilizing wall-of-sound production tactics and rubbed [...]

Today, this first day of 2009, I wish everyone all the best in the coming year. I also am finishing up this series of posts featuring Canadian artists selecting their choices for best music of 2008. I felt it would be fitting to finish up with a great alternative rock band right here in Vancouver called The Painted Birds. This band has had some decent success seeing their video for the track So Beautiful circulating on Much Music, and recently touring Canada coast to coast. The band finished up 2008 with a great show at The Backstage Lounge along with [...]

Bend Sinister is a Vancouver progressive rock band with a little pop entwined into their sound who released their latest album in October, titled Stories Of Brothers, Tales of Lovers on the usually more heavy label Distort Inc . It's hard to believe that this group of talented bandmates, singer/songwriter Daniel Moxon, lead guitarist Naben Ruthnum, bassist Joel Meyers, singer/guitarist Henry, and Jason Dana on drums started as a high school jazz band just over seven years ago. The band has been supported quite well by CBC Radio 3 , which is where I first heard a track [...]

Seeing Elton John in Las Vegas this summer was among my concert highlights in 2008, especially since the show began with my all-time favourite Elton song, Bennie and the Jets. I've never tired of this classic-rock fixture because, 35 years after its recording, the track has somehow maintained its elusiveness and duality. Bennie and the Jets is glam and disco; studio and live; celebration and satire; a dancefloor filler and stubbornly mid-tempoed. The song is so damn indefinable and flummoxing, I wonder if the producers of Soul Train realized they were [...]
Earlier today, the fine gentlemen in Bend Sinister let me know that they were set to play a benefit/protest in support of Insite on Thursday. They were going to go on before Bedouin Soundclash . That is, apparently, before the radio darlings (or someone in their camp) found out that Bend Sinister was planning to play fully plugged in and decided they didn't want to go on with acoustics after Bend Sinister played with all of their gear. So, the guys, who've very generously donated their music here to benefit Insite in the [...]

Inspired by I (Heart) Music's 33 Hottest Bands in Canada poll, I put out the call via email last week to some folks asking them to put together a list of their favourite local acts. Eleven responded (and I did one) and the results are tabulated below. Everyone made a list of (up to) ten bands, with ten points to first, nine to second, and so on. I hesitate to call this "best" or "hottest" list or anything like that, as its mostly for fun and its far from exhaustive. Hopefully it a) introduces [...]
