What? There's a new Postal Service song, you say? The long-dormant collaboration between Benjamin Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello awakens from its slumber this spring with reunion shows — and the 10-year anniversary re-release (on April 9, via Sub Pop) of their album "Give Up." On the release, there are two new songs, each featuring jenny Lewis, including this electro-pop number that's dancey in the manner dozens of Postal Service followers have been dancey. What fun. ||| Stream: "A Tattered Line of String": [...]

As we bring you our second slew of our Best Songs of 2012, keep in mind that as the numbers get closer to 1, our decisions were just that ...

photo by Dave Lichterman Bobbing for hits. Though Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard was making light of the his band's songwriting process during his interview with KEXP's Stevie Zoom, the fact is, with all the songs he's written over nearly the past decade, he'd accumulated enough songs he's grown fond of but never developed with his bandmates for one reason or another. Eventually, he couldn't resist turing those apples to pie (his metaphor, not ours), and thus Former Lives , his solo debut, took shape. Elsewhere, he'd said: “These songs [...]

ILLUSTRATION BY LYDIA CONKLIN Another year has passed, and with that comes our best attempt to gather our favorite tracks and order them from best to, well, the very best. This collective is about as subjective as it gets - it's not something that necessarily represents what was popular or what certain sites wrote about. It's simply the music we loved in 2012. Without further ado, we present to you our list of the top 100 songs of 2012. While we had a blast putting this together, it didn't come without an argument or two. What [...]
Top 10 albums of 2012 Well, it's December, it's a week until Christmas, it's midweek and I'm drinking. That can mean only one thing, I've read Trotter's Top 10 for this year and felt compelled to pen a response. Yes, it's time to pore over the musical detritus of 2012 and pick out the wheat from the chaff... Or, to let my inner geek put things into lists... Here, we start with a list of the top 10 albums which I have enjoyed muchly this year. In a seperate post [...]

RR Benjamin Gibbard by Larry Hirshowitz Benjamin Gibbard is fascinated by love and death. This comes as no surprise to fans of Death Cab for Cutie . And, as he has branched out on his own for his first solo album, those topics are pretty much still at the front of his mind. From Ben: “I think that love and death are two subjects that I tend to keep coming back to because they are so unexplainable. Just when you [...]

41. Young Guns 'Bones' Keeping Kerrang! alive and well. 42. Tribes 'Baby' Generic indie, sure. Darn good generic indie. 43. Django Django 'Django Django' Mad-hype not justified; they're not that interesting. 44. Jack White 'Blunderbuss' More [...]

(31) Days of Good 2012 has officially begun.  Enjoy the ride. After fifteen years making music with Death Cab For Cutie , 2012 saw the release of lead singer Ben Gibbard's  debut solo album (as Benjamin Gibbard) — Former Lives .  I enjoyed this album quite a bit, it was a good change of pace from Gibbard's more familiar Death Cab material.  One track in particular really stands [...]

Benjamin Gibbard - Teardrop Windows

The early release online of Benjamin Gibbard's new album has led to a bit of disappointment for some. Reviews were decent (aside from SPIN's passive-aggressive commentary), but it seems the expectation for Gibbard to live up to the holiness reached from The Postal Service and Death Cab's "Transatlanticism" fell hard on his solo release. He has also been the butt of a few jokes for insisting we start calling him 'Benjamin' ...But going through heartache isn't supposed to turn you into a modest genius. You don't go through heartache to write a solo record, you write a [...]

The Palace of fine arts is somewhat of an intimidating space. For Damien Jurado , there was dead silence as he told us stories and sung with nothing but an acoustic electric guitar. It was indeed going to be an intimate night. Once Ben Gibbard  took the stage the audience gave him the same respect they showed to the previous performer. We all just held on to the silence and let the master work, trying not to make a sound in our seats.  Ben was on stage with nothing but a guitar, a mic, some amps and a [...]
