Geez, it's been almost a full week since I last posted and that's unacceptable! It's been a combination of being busy and the whole not-so-EZ archive deal (haha). Anyways, no more excuses. We are back to the good stuff... I don't know much about Benjy Ferree . In fact I don't even have his full debut LP, Leaving The Nest , which is to be released on Domino Records November 7th. But even after just hearing a few songs, I do know that I abosultely love Benjy's spin on the [...]
Just a quick note on one of the most enjoyable albums I’ve come across in recent months. On his debut, Leaving the Nest, Benjy Ferree manages to deliver his no frills alt-country compositions in a way that is both instantaneously appealing and interesting past the first few listens. The music and ...
My new theory is that you can't be a bartender at the Black Cat for any length of time, exposed to night after night of great music, and then make songs that suck. That would be akin to hanging out with Shakespeare and friends for a while, and then resorting to using descriptive words like "suck," "fantastic," and "amazing." Benjy Ferree , who probably served me, Randy, Uncle Tom & His Artist Wife Sugarduck spirits during his time at El Gato Negro, is proving my theory with fantastic songs like the ones below. Benjy returned to [...]

Benjy Ferree --one of Domino Recording's newest artist-- is releasing his debut album Leaving the Nest on November 7th. Here's a snippet from his press release: "To say that his backstory is an interesting one would be an understatement... Raised in an vigorously religious but musical family, Benjy was inspired at an impressionable age by Will Oldham: not to rock, but to act, thanks to young Will's performance in John Sayles' Matewan, a movie based on flesh and blood (The Hatfields of that famous familial squabble, if you must know). After high school, he moved [...]

For the last couple of weeks I've been listening to an advance copy of Leaving The Nest, a new album from Benjy Ferree. Hipster UK indie label Domino Recording Co.'s US branch are set to release the record on November 7th. A bit of bio... Raised in an vigorously religious but musical family, Benjy was inspired at an impressionable age by Will Oldham: not to rock, but to act, thanks to young

Benjy Ferree is a new artist to join Domino Records collective (Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Psapp, etc). After high school, he moved straight to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, supporting himself in a variety of service industry jobs (including a stint as an au pair [...]
I'll keep this short and sweet, cause I'm on the air right now. Benjy Ferree - " In the Countryside "

I have yet to learn how to pronounce his last name. We gave many attempts and hypotheses on air last week, but that's unimportant. What *is* important is that Benjy Ferree [ website / myspace ] has created one of my favorite albums this year. It's one of those things I knew I was in love before I was halfway through, and the second half only reinforced my devotion. Here are just a couple tracks on it, but really, the whole thing is quite stellar: Benjy [...]

Me and Benjy Ferree have spent a lot of quality time together this weekend. His latest offering, Leaving The Nest, is a sweet combination of glam styled pop, southern swamp gothic, and out there indie influences. Sometimes he has me thinking Marc Bolan, like on the disc's opener, the blissfully catchy boogie, "In The Countryside." Other times, when I listen to "Little At a Time" and its slightly off-kilter approach to instrumentation, I'm thinking Badly Drawn Boy. Then, we get to a song like "Private Honeymoon," a haunting ballad of violin and piano, it makes me [...]

Last week, Microsoft invited select members of the media and some select bloggers out to Seattle for a preview demo of their new mp3 player, The Zune. MOKB was one of those bloggers. They took us to the Zune building, an in-the-works satellite office away from the Microsoft campus. It was not what I expected. Kind of a mess, very casual, kids playing XBOX 360s, couches everywhere, very laid back. Definitely set up for long nights and needed distractions. Microsoft started with an explanation of [...]

Benjy Ferree - In the Countryside (mp3) Benjy Ferree [ website / myspace ] opened for Adem last night at Joe’s Pub. He was excellent and I'm eager to get my grubby hands on more of his stuff. I was only sent the above track and I loved it instantly. Listen to the track above and you'll want to put you happy hand in the air. Adem played afterwards and his first two songs entranced me. Then his slowness [...]
