This is the first in a new series of posts that explores artists with demonstrated talent but no ability to translate their talent into a long term career. Some people refer to these artists as "one hit wonders" but I have never liked that term because. To me "one hit wonder" applies to people that do novelty songs (think Disco Duck by Rick Dees) not to people with real talent. So....we will avoid that term and refer these people as underachievers - people that achieved less success than expected. Up first is Benny Mardones. [...]
Below is the latest edition of our weekly feature, Stuck On Repeat . The premise is simple, we’ve asked all our contributors to submit one track and a brief write-up. The track can be new or it can be old, just whatever we could not stop listening to this week. These are the songs we’ve had Stuck On Repeat . :: selected by: V :: Wreckless Eric - (I'd Go The) Whole Wide World (192 kbps) [...]

![Seven "Love Songs" That Are Probably (OK, Definitely) Inappropriate Mixtape Fodder [Misguided Intentions]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1522560_lg.jpg)
Back in my school days, Valentine's Day was a time for exchanging cheap perforated Valentines cards and inedible Necco hearts, and punishing the unpopular kids by "forgetting" to give them anything. (I was perhaps one of those unpopular kids.) If you were really lucky you got a mixtape from a girl, and I did get a few in my day, even if they were from girl-space-friends and not girlfriends. What was disturbing was the presence of "Every Breath You Take" on said mixtapes, given it's the kind of love song that John Wayne Gacy might write. [...]
New Jersey-born singer/songwriter Benny Mardones holds the rare distinction of being a one-hit wonder who twice had a US Top 40 hit with the same song. Mardones managed to place his song Into The Night into the Top 40 nearly a decade apart. Although it would be his only hit song, there are few listeners to radio during the '80s to whom the song is unfamiliar. Mardones had released one album, when, in 1980, he issued Never Run, Never Hide . From it, Into The Night was chosen as a single and listeners [...]

Look on the bright side, we're approximately halfway through the work week. Only two more days until Friday. So far this week, I've rediscovered Pizzicato Five for the twentieth time. Sure, they are one of the most successful Japanese acts of all time (as far as sales in overseas go, signing to Matador) but even that might not be enough to showcase their brilliance. Surprisingy, I've been listening to their commercial failure this week, being 1989's On Her Majesty's Request . Their promotional department must have been lacking in skill, as this one [...]
