After a short break Mailbag Monday has returned! I thought about killing it off again and trying something new, but as you can see that isn't happening quite yet. I'm still trying to work out a better system so until then Mailbag Monday will continue. As always you can send your tracks to me on SoundCloud and please be sure to leave a note that you want it in Mailbag Monday (or else it won't get in!). Send me your track You [...]

Filed under: News , I Fought the Law The doctor who gave Michael Jackson powerful sedatives the night of his untimely passing is likely to be indicted on involuntary manslaughter charges. The Associated Press reports that prosecutors appear to be preparing to press charges against cardiologist Dr. Conrad Murray, who treated Jackson's persistent insomnia with propofol -- a dangerously strong anesthetic -- on June 25, the night of Jackson's death. The LA Country Coroner declared Jackson's death a homicide, with "acute propofol intoxication" [...]

Happy happy Monday! A modern classic from Vedge faves Deekline & Solo, who've made an appearance or two or three in this esteemed pages (usually in some sort of rump-shaking capacity), remixed by the Stantons (who've wiggled a cheek or two themselves). For me, it's all about 2:51, but I'm a sucker like that. Deekline & Solo - Hands Up (Stanton Warriors Remix) from the Stanton Warriors' Stanton Sessions Vol. 3 [...]
Benzos is a band that has quietly been gaining ground on my good-things-to-come radar over the last few months. I first heard of them through some holiday themed/timed pieces that, to be honest, didn't really do anything for me. Since then I've heard their upcoming album, Branches, which will be released August 7th and then I also received a little three song teaser EP which I believe they refer to as Coup D'Etat. I must say that with each successive listening I've liked this brooding, moody, almost whispered rock more and more. Sadly, although their [...]

I keep finding myself getting lost between the notes! Here are songs like waves - tracks that can teach you to swim or [...]

In celebration of the Christmas Season, Benzos is giving away their Coup d'état EP for free. The title track officially marks the first independent release for Benzos. The band had composed it during a practice a few months ago and decided to slip it into a set in August at the Knitting Factory. Based on the crowd reaction, and the enjoyment the band got from playing it, Benzos decided to made it a staple in all of their live performances. Though they had just released their CD Branches, the band discussed recording this new track for [...]
The illness I suffered from during the weekend is still refusing to leave my body, so frustratingly I continue being extremely tired. A working day of 8 hours is certainly more than I can handle right now, as staying focused/concentrated/intereste d is pretty difficult (virtually impossible). But soon Christmas is upon us and hopefully the days off will provide me with some much needed rest. Despite being somewhat disappointed with their recent concert, I have nonetheless bought tickets for the next Kent concert in Copenhagen (February 23 next year). Speaking of the Swedish [...]

On Progress & Sanctimonious Douchebags by Alex Carnevale Whenever you dig in the meat of a comments section on the Oink file sharing network shutdown, you inevitably get to the prick portion: You Stole. There's been a lot of handwringing since Oink got shut down from people who were like, "Way to go, federal authorities !" As if the free distribution of art were an evil that had to be stopped in the [...]

Hey kids, Lady Byrd here with a short-but-suh'weet update for you. It may be rushed, but better late than never, right? Some of these have already been around the music blog circuit, but I'm "Ms. Catch Up" over here and they are still well deserving of some WNR exposure. This summer, us New Yorkers got to befriend a beautiful Swedish boy by the name of Markus who had fantastic taste in music, and seemingly... a heart of gold. Soon before he left for Stockholm, he handed me an Audible [...]

Brooklyn, NY Thanks to Joe over at Instrumental Analysis I was reminded that Branches from Benzos saw a release last week. I have been loving this one for a while now. "Phase 2" Benzos on MySpace Benzos on The Hype Machine

Benzos is a band from the NYC area. I talked about them a little bit last fall, when they came through Baltimore. Last week, they released Branches . Their music is basically atmospheric indie, utilizing some elements of ambient. I like "Phase 2", so give it a listen and see what you think. They don't currently have any dates scheduled in the Baltimore/Washington region. However, they do have a show coming up in Philly at The Khyber on 8/22. Phase 2 Hurt Everybody
