Beat Street is a club night based out of Leeds, with a group of residents (all local) pushing some pretty fine tech, house and disco. Regulars to the night include up-comers such as Matt Fear , Johnny Hopkinson and Will Crawshaw so you'll be happy to hear that the collective, for lack of a better word, has just dropped its first EP. Literally titled Free EP 001 (it's free), this release is a whole lot of fun packed into four tracks which lean toward the more disco tendencies of the respective [...]
Nate Salman, Alex Siegel, and Clayton Ernst started playing music together in the fall of 2010 while living in a cooperative- living community in Berkeley, California. They found their music -and lineup- to be an ever evolving process until finally stumbling upon the essential talents of Sean Suess, Brijean Murphy, and Walker Johnson. Falsetto vocals and layered rhythmic melodies abound. Download Constellation Free Music, Every Day. Subscribe [...]
Constellation by Waterstrider Six-piece Waterstrider are a young band that began in a UC Berkeley co-op last year. Constellation is available for purchase above - where you can also grab the title track for free - and its swooning indie pop sounds a lot more thoughtful and mature than most self-released debut efforts. Waterstrider opens for Gardens & Villa and Young Man at Bottom of the Hill on Thursday night (9pm, $10). That's a compelling bill, and we've got a pair [...]
In correspondence to Local Natives , this five piece band with the name of Local Hero delivers a similar buoyant pop vibe. The Aldgate is their first ever EP and it is only nineteen minutes long. These guys picked the appeals of Vampire Weekend , The Strokes , and Girls to make 5 melodious songs on this EP. My obsession with tropical music and bittersweet lyrics instantly pulled me to "Press Box." Listen carefully to Mackay's mature voice. The remarkable thing about Local Hero is the truth behind "Barcelona Daydream," [...]
Bon Iver performed earlier this week at the Greek Theater in Berkeley to a sold-out crowd. The sun set soon after his performance began, making it easy, besides the illuminating cellphones (replacing lighters) and occasional hoots-n-hollers ("We love you Justin!"), to become lost in Justin Vernon's voice. With the exception of a few tracks including "Re: Stacks," Bon Iver was backed by a ten piece (about that) band providing a much fuller sound. Many of the songs including "Flume" (which we've included below) featured added arrangements and variations to the original recordings. His performance [...]

NeuFutur does not get much in the way of folk music. Thus, whenever Tompkins Square records sends us anything, we have to be really on our toes. Whether it is due to re-releasing decades old album or finding some of the newest folk virtuosos (such as is the case with this album), Tompkins Square is [...]
