I've had my eye on this Berkeley-based band for a while, and now is as good a time as ever to introduce Tempo No Tempo to the Macktronic faithful. Their debut EP ( The Get Down ) is as good a collection of dance/rock/goodness as anything I've heard in a while. Now they're set to release a new EP ( Repetition ), and they'll be celebrating this with a release party at Bottom of the Hill on November 15th along with The Donts , The Lovely Public , and DJ Pasternak (of Lemonade). Hosted by [...]

Ok, so I made it back from Sin City in one piece, with all of my ventricles intact. Verbose sentence to sum up Las Vegas: "Vegas is old people with lizard skin, height-challenged Mexicans with call-girl cards clicking fingers, drunken cigar smoking stumblers, British cops, hotel mix-ups, opulence and leviathan architectural sights, and the sound of bells and whistles as money and words make their nefarious exchanges." A work colleague had this more moribund and terse quote to offer about Las Vegas: "Vegas, the place where [...]
So, who enjoyed St. Patrick's day? Ireland didn't win the Six Nations ( no! ), which was a bit gutting. But, much later on, I ended up in a club full of Scottish people, wearing Guinness hats, dancing to "She is handsome, she is pretty / she is the girl from Belfast city!" So you know, pretty fun, from what I can remember. Berkeley Colour Me In The Redneck Manifesto [...]

Don't know what it is about March, but I keep finding out about excellent local bands. Here we have The Attachments out of Berkeley and their unique brand indie pop. Sounds like Weezer had a love child on the beach with one of The Beatles. Here's a song off their latest release. ::: The Attachments - Karla-la You can buy their debut EP over on the myspace page. (What's up with all the girl-titled songs?) [ The Attachments on myspace .] [ [...]

At the present moment, by favorite Berkeley-based indie rock act is The Morning Benders. If you're not familiar with them, they've got one excellent EP out and another forthcoming. Their sound is for fans of The Shins of Langhorne Slim; they've also got an interesting throwback pop jangle to their tracks, which I like. Here's a fresh off the press song from their upcoming EP called Boarded Doors . ::: The Morning Benders - Damnit Anna [ The Morning Benders on myspace .] [ Current Macktronic Contest = Free [...]

Lots and lots of reasons to do this post...... ONE: Sufjan's new live track circulating the internet I totally agree with a popular blogger opinion that the sheer amount of music Sufjan puts out is sometimes a bit daunting. But this new track is worth the hype. ::: Sufjan Stevens - Majesty Snowbird (live) You can also check out lots of videos over at YouTube by clicking here . TWO: Sufjan playing in Berkeley next week Two sold out shows at [...]

I really don't know how this post slipped by me for so long, considering that The Morning Benders come from my back yard, essentially. They just recently released an terribly excellent EP called Loose Change . And we all know how much I love EP's. It's a six song collection of crashing, catchy pop songs. Take a listen. ::: The Morning Benders - Grain of Salt ::: The Morning Benders - I Was Wrong [...]

Busy weekend highlighted by (what i thought was) a great World Cup final. Ran across the picture above while cruising FlickR, which is where I get most the images for this blog. Sometimes the accounts don't share the images so I can't link to the pictures directly, which sucks. So, I thought this'd be a good chance to float a couple great Flickr Photo Gallery links your direction: gAntico ---> fanatastic italian victory shots merkley ---> shoots some dang pretty girls (bay area!) roidrage ---> dude [...]

I got a chance to check out Radiohead on Friday night, the first of two shows they were playing at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. Foeweel has the entire show, complete with mp3's and a nice review. Apparently, Persistent Sound did the recording, but I couldn't find anything on that. Anyhow, it was a fantastic show. Lots of new stuff (which was complained about incessantly on the radio, as mentioned in Foeweel's review, which I also listened to on the way home), some new stuff, and an amazing [...]
