Classical pianist and composer Christopher O'Riley curates Mixed Media selecting favorites of his work and others. 2011 marked the 100th Anniversary of the birth of film composer, Bernard Herrmann, known for his iconic musical (and pure music concrete in the case of Hitchcock's The Birds) landscapes/backdrops for films like Citizen Kane, Cape Fear, Taxi Driver (his last) and memorable and numerous Alfred Hitchcock works. Psycho has long been a favorite film of mine, and Herrmann's score is perhaps more indelibly inscribed on my memory than even the violently etched black-and-white images...
After an 18-year absence, Cardinal has finally returned with Hymns (Fire), its sophomore album. To rabid fans of the bi-coastal duo who'd all but given up hope of ever hearing a sequel to their masterful self-titled 1994 debut, that freshman year must have seemed interminable. When its first longplayer appeared on an indie-rock scene buzzing [...]

Perhaps best known for the NPR series From The Top, musician Christopher O’Riley is far more in-tune with music than most of the world. Not only does he host and mentor young musicians, O’Riley also transcribes and arranges songs by Radiohead, Arcade Fire and more for the piano and, more recently, the cello. O’Riley has [...]

It's Halloween and while you've been carving out your pumpkins and sorting out a costume, the Dolby Anol boys have been hard at work turning Bernard Hermann's theme from "Psycho" into a chunky 4/4 number suitable for any party you've got planned tonight. Get it down the pipes and dust off your best ghost costume for this evening. Bernard Herrmann - Psycho (Dolby Anol remix for Edinburgh Film Festival 2011) by Dolby Anol

I love horror movies. I also love their soundtracks. It always amazes me how many soundtracks to great (and...not so great) horror movies end up going out of print! A well-crafted horror movie soundtrack can be just as memorable and creepy as the movie's villain. Think of a movie like Jaws or Halloween , those movies are scarier because of their amazing scores! It's a shame that so many soundtracks to lesser horror films have become lost over the years. While I'll be the first to admit that none of the soundtracks I'm [...]

MP3: Bernard Herrmann - Theme From Taxidriver

Think of your favorite film right now. Chances are high that along with an incredible scene, you remember the music, as well. So much attention is put on the actors, the director, the script, the story, and the visuals that the songs supporting them almost slide underneath the surface. Sometimes a really good composer can say more with a single note or melody than pages of dialogue. They evoke every emotion possible, from fear to happiness to melancholy, all while having pretty catchy melodies. It’s a way of creating an instant connection for the viewer, even before they’ve really figured [...]
True Blood may have taken the 4th of July weekend off, but "Snap and Fingerpop" had plenty of fireworks to make up for it. This week's orgy was -- gulp -- orgy-er; Lafayette is back to his catty, furniture-humping self; and Jason's Light of Day storyline is finally crossing paths with the rest of the fun. If there was a theme here, it was folks finding themselves in over their heads. Tara is watching a news piece on the Pamploma Running of the Bulls at one point, and it's the [...]
If all the rumors are to be believed, Jonah Hex - both the box office mega-flop and Mastodon's accompanying score - was pretty much (ahem!) hexed from the get-go. Massive re-shoots took place, and original composer/Mastocollaborator John Powell left the project, taking with him what Brent Hinds has called "some of the best shit I’ve [...]

Mad Men is back. Hooray. We've covered this before, but it's still pitch perfect in almost every respect. The costumes, the scenery, the furniture, the politics, the mores. In fact the only bit of the series that feels like a pastiche is the opening title sequence. The falling silhouettes are clearly meant to ape designers like Saul Bass (cf. his poster for Vertigo or titles for Anatomy of A Murder , for example), but without Bass's economy of line or instinct for metaphor. The music, [...]

Psycho? The Exorcist? Halloween? Listen, if you dare

Pelski is, in fact, more of a film-guru than a music-buff. So when I came across this remix of Bernard Herrmann's Psycho score, you can imagine the excitement...and the relief that this remix is not like the majority of movie-themed tracks. It's hugely original and even incorporates Janet Leigh's piercing shower-scream from that classic scene. It's hard to forget that penetrating shriek as Norman Bates slashes her smooth bodice to pieces, but who'd have thought to use that shriek as an actual instrument in the track? Crooks 'N' Gunn, that's who. [...]

When I first stumbled across Old is the New Neu, I was immediately drawn in by the choice writing (I'm a sucker for good writing - even though I never work hard enough on my own) and credible selections. I mean that's what we ask of a blog really isn't it? Just two simple things. To funnel the entire cultural history of the World into a few paragraphs and do it with some wit. No, wait three things - and to do it at least five time a week so we don't feel too trapped at work. [...]
