Yes, it's taken us a while to come up with this. We're slow that way, you know? To start this 2011 recap off on a slightly moribund note, the death of Scottish folk singer Bert Jansch (1943-2011) in October rather cast a pall over the past year. Jansch has long been a part of my everyday experiences of listening to music, and the influence of his unhurried acoustic guitar playing can be heard in several other musicians I admire as well (Neil Young and Nick Drake come [...]

Pentangle : Sweet Child [ purchase ] Bert Jansch : Angie [ purchase ] Most of the time, Bert Jansch is described as a British folk musician. Fair enough, since many of the songs he performed were from the British folk cannon. But Jansch's first inspiration was the American blues musician Big Bill Broonzy. Broonzy started out playing for dancers in juke joints, so he had to lay down a solid beat. But, on top of that beat, [...]

Since we're all a tight-knit music-lovin' community, we created this segment so that some of our good friends who are doing good things in the industry of human happiness could share the records that they've been diggin' on lately. Our second edition of Grooves Shared comes from Dog Gone Blog's Sam Davis, whose blog explores music of all colors. He's definitely turned me on to some amazing stuff over the past year or so. DGB will also host a Post-Phish extravaganza on Friday, December 30th [...]

Two decades from now, how do you think 2011 will be remembered? As the year we lost Amy Winehouse? How about the year three of music's most iconic outfits - The White Stripes, R.E.M., and LCD Soundsystem - all decided to call it quits? Maybe Lana Del Rey will prove a sustainable force and then we can all tell our children about the great collagen debate of 2011. Or try to explain to them how two rock and roll hall of famers came together to create the worst piece of music imaginable. Yeah, 2011 was a fucking weird year. [...]

The Grim Reaper feasted on a rich harvest in October, though he thankfully et off a bit towards the end. The headline death this month probably is that of folk-music legend Bert Jansch , who influenced so many musicians – and not only folkies. Among those who cited Jansch as influences are Jimmy Page, Elton John, Nick Drake, Johnny Marr, Mazzy Starr's Hope Sandoval, Neil Young, Donovan, Blur's Graham Coxon, Suede's Bernard Butler, Al Stewart, The Fleet Foxes and Paul Simon. Clarence Johnson , who has died at 69, might have become a [...]

Bert Jansch is dead andthat is both a very sad loss and a great shock as it had seemed that hewas up and about again, recovered from his initial problem with lungcancer. There you go... Bert was a big fixture in my younger life, helping me, (after Bob Dylan) convert to an interest in folk/acousticmusic and an engagement with the Brit folk scene of the sixties whichfor a brief few years was actually a cool place to inhabit, mainlybecause of Bert and his sidekick John Renbourn and a couple of otherfaces from the Soho scene, centred round Les Cousins [...]

My first exposure to Bert Jansch was his 1990 album Sketches . My coworker, the late Dan Conn, played it when a promotional copy crossed his desk. The third track, "Poison" , floored me. I've been captivated by the Scotsman's music ever since. Jansch died last week. Rather than immersing myself in Jansch's music, I've been listening to living artists of the same ilk. It's a gross oversimplification, but Jansch was like a quieter Richard Thompson, a more muscular Nick Drake or a Scottish version of Chris Smither . [...]

Bert Jansch, who died last week, started his career playing the cellar folk clubs of Edinburgh. Now that might not mean a lot to most people, but it does if you've ever drank in one. They are not quiet places. You don't get to develop a wistful, delicate playing style in those drinking dens. I think that might have had a bearing on the creation of his signature sound, the thing that completely revolutionised guitar playing in the 1960s. One moment he'd be picking out a beautiful tune, and the next he would wrench a [...]

No Words would likely not exist without the output and reaching influence of Glasgow-born Herbert Jansch , founding member of The Pentangle , who passed away only four days ago. Below I have collected mostly instrumental pieces by Jansch and his Pentangling contemporaries staggered with a few vocal pieces and traditional ballads. R.I.P.
Bert Jansch passed away. I thought his music should be honored: Bert Jansch Tribute .
Los Angeles Times (MCT) -- LOS ANGELES - Influential Scottish guitarist, singer and songwriter Bert Jansch, who has been lauded as a Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar, died of lung cancer Wednesday at a London hospital. He was 67. Jansch was a member of the folk group Pentangle, which in the 1960s, along with the likes of Fairport Convention, helped revive public interest in traditional British folk music the way many British rockers had done for American blues. His...

Just received the sad news that Bert Jansch has passed away. The highly acclaimed Scottish guitarist was 67. His work, both with Pentangle and as a solo artist, was dazzling and original, influencing such famous names as Neil Young, Nick Drake, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Smiths. Johnny Marr, guitar player with the latter, once remarked that Jansch "completely reinvented guitar playing and set a standard that is still unequalled today. There are people playing guitar who don't even realize they've been influenced by him one step removed..." Amen to that. Bert Jansch - Where Did My [...]
