1. EMA - Past Life Martyred Saints (Souterrain Transmissions) Listen: Anteroom Martyrs are not victims. There is no self-pity or cool detachment to their pain. Past Life Martyred Saints is an intimate but uncomfortable album, it will make you feel guilty for the hearts you've torn apart and it will make you feel weak for all the times you've been hurt and felt victimized for it. 2. Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges [...]
Trying to keep consistent with the posts that I put together last year, this is my list of favourite new artists that I found in 2011. One caveat worth mentioning, a lot of these artists may have existed pre-2011, but only came on to my radar last year. Although this post really should have been published at the end of last year, I'm glad I'm finally getting to it. Stream them in playlist form via Spotify , Rdio and Grooveshark . [...]

The New York influential records label DFA as just uploaded a mega compilation with some their biggest hits on Soundcloud ... enjoy the ride on memory lane !!! dfa best of by DFA Records

Sometimes your mission finds you. For Daniel Sewell, a Black-Filipino kid from Linwood, Detroit, his career was never a choice. Danny never learned how to rap, words came together in his head even at elementary school age. Borrowing the name of his favorite Reservoir Dogs character, Danny Brown found joy ripping into the twisted corners of the genre, both solo and with his crew Reser' Vor Dogs (since re-christened "Bruiser Brigade.") The problem was that few outside the city paid him much mind, save for a brief dalliance with a Roc-A-Fella Records A&R. [...]

I'll never stop loving the beauty of a physical album; everything from the scent of a new vinyl, to the magic of reading the lyrics and seeing the images inside the insert, to the touch of the glossy, matte or recycled paper, and the most important factor - the cover art of the actual overall masterpiece. Here is some of the best album art of 2011. It's easy to see in all of these artists, that there was an actual thought to the structure of not only their music but how it visually sounds. Enjoy! [...]

Tweet We fully realise that this list is a little later than most other Best Of 2011 lists but unlike albums, we were still finding absolute gems right up until the last day of the year, so we held off in favour of having a more complete list. Below you'll find our 50 Best Songs Of 2011 in order, and to whittle the list down to this top 50 we started off with a running list [...]

I took a year off from doing a favorite Seattle records list due to lazyitis (sorry Seattle). Here's my top ten records from my fair city for 2011 (sorry Seattle). 1. Seapony - Go With Me ( Hardly Art ) Twee is alive and well in Seattle. Seapony kind of came out of nowhere late last year. They put their debut album out on local label Hardly Art, played countless shows around town and generally put the Northwest back on the map when [...]

The Best of Andy Rooney Volumes 1 & 2: Movies & TV This is kind of bullshit guys, because, let's be honest, you should just do a huge DVD box set that includes EVERY SINGLE ONE of Andy Rooney's curmudgeonly but cute and out-of-touch rants. According to Amazon, "Run Time: 245 minutes". Doesn't that seem like WAY TOO LITTLE ANDY ROONEY?

Tweet As is now customary on Listen Before You Buy , we spent the entire month of December counting down our top 31 albums of 2011 , revealing a new album on the list each day. Since we think that you guys are already pretty savvy when it comes to the best music around, we didn't bother giving you paragraph after paragraph of why we think an album deserves the position we gave it (with the exception of [...]

There have been grumblings that 2011 has been a poor year for cinema. While I admit that the Summer Blockbuster season was less than stellar, overall, there have been some exceptional films released. Sequels may have dominated the box office but 2011 will be remembered as the year directors and audiences really started to embrace what can only called "the other". Beloved directors such as Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg embraced the world of 3D filmmaking. Acclaimed directors like Terrence Malick and Lars von Trier pushed themselves to new heights and audiences were willing to take the [...]

There are certain years which can truly be remembered as 'a good year for music'. 2011 has not been a dissapointment, providing us with some memorable debuts, career-saving come-backs and some pretty special break-through albums. I've taken it upon myself to compile a list of the 10 best albums of 2011 according to the writers of Never Enough Notes, unfortunately there's at least 50 albums which should have been mentioned but I'm not technically savvy enough to make a bigger list.
