Now that the UK summer is finally on its way, we turn our attention away from urban multi-gig festivals to outdoor festivals; the fantasy towns built of canvas where we leave our troubles at the gates and indulge in three or four days of musical and non-musical madness. It's fair to say that summer festivals are some of the absolute highlights of the Breaking More Waves calendar. Despite the evolution of festivals from being something on the periphery of society to mass media publicised events that embrace the mainstream, the best festivals still conjure and embrace an ideology that is [...]
The full Glastonbury line-up for this year has been announced on their website . Headliners for this year include what we already knew: U2, Vampire Weekend, Muse and Stevie Wonder. Acts that caught our eye so far: Slash, Snoog Dogg (playing the Olympia, July 6th ), LCD Soundsystem, MGMT, Phoenix, Flaming Lips, Grizzly Bear, The XX, Broken Social Scene, Mos Def and of course,a special set from REEF! At the other end of the scale, look out for Mountain Man, Local Natives, Beth Jeans Houghton, Lissie, Here We Go Magic, Chromeo, Chiddy Bang, The Avett [...]
Beth Jeans Houghton is the Newcastle teen who looks set to be one of this years big big things, crafting finely honed melody from the fantastic and the familiar, and Stornoway are the four piece whose quintessential pop is coloured in pastoral hues (and we introduced here ). Together they're making up this month's Twisted Folk tour, starting next week for 10 days of an amazing tour. Tickets are going very fast though.... Monday 8th February 2010 - Exeter Phoenix Arts Centre [...]

Tonight's theme was female fronted/centred alternative rock bands with Sky Larkin + MPHO & Beth Jeans Houghton. First up was Beth Jeans Houghton , who played a tight set of raggedy indie country pop wearing a GIANT blonde wig "a la" Amy Winehouse . Her songs were charming and enchantingly innocent sounding, with an edge not seen in country music since Johnny Cash [...]

Twisted Folk presents: Stornoway and Beth Jeans Houghton - UK Tour in February 2010 Over the past four years, Twisted Folk Tours have become known for adventurous, hand picked line-ups representing the best in modern folk and twisted popular music. It's Twisted Folk who put together this year's highly successful collaboration between UK pastoral pop group Tunng and Malawian desert bluesmen Tinariwen . Who assembled Nina Nastasia, Jeffrey Lewis and William Elliot Whitmore for an [...]

If you read super-fast through the past few months of this blog it would go a bit like... blah blah Beth Jeans Houghton... blah blah Beth Jeans Houghton... but that's because there's a lot of love here at Daily Growl HQ for Newcastle's own purveyor of fine pop and wearer ...

So another month has passed us by, and it's getting darker and colder out there. Let's have a look at some of the new releases the end of summer '09 brought us, shall we? Girls ' debut album, Album , was widely talked about - in fact, I only checked out the album because I'd seen their name all over the place - and is, as it turns out, quite good listening. They aren't doing anything hugely new, but that's ok sometimes - their brand of fuzzed-over surf-ish California pop is a lot of fun [...]

When we first saw a picture of Beth Jeans Houghton , all doe-eyed and trussed up like Pete Doherty's female self, we weren't impressed. Tsk, another beautifully androgynous singer-songwriter who will get loads of column inches thanks to her look and not her music, we thought to ourselves (unfairly). Then we saw another picture of her in a newspaper and she looked like Lily Savage, if Lily Savage had been set upon by a pack of ferrets. We were confused and mildly aroused so we decided to probe further and low and behold, Beth Jeans Houghton is pretty ruddy [...]

So here's this month's international digest, a day late, but there's good reason for that. Unlike previous months when I've been casting around for who to include, this month I didn't have any doubt. Beth Jeans Houghton. Not only because she's ace and because she did a recent Seven Songs ...

Once more, here is September's edition of the Music Alliance Pact . For those of you who don't know about MAP, it's a collection of music blogs from around the world who band together once a month to shed light on up-and-comers from their home countries. It's sort of like the WTO without the human rights violations. This month we've welcomed two new countries: Colombia and Turkey . This edition showcases 33 tracks from bands around the world. Once again I've gone ahead and highlighted some of [...]

The Music Alliance Pact is a collective of 33 of the world's top music blogs and webzines from 33 countries spanning six continents. Every month, each of these 33 sites picks one hot local song that gets posted on all these great blogs and zines. ARGENTINA: [...]
ARGENTINA: Zonaindie Matilda - Vanidad Matilda is an electro-pop duo based in Rosario (one of Argentina's largest cities), consisting of Juan Manuel Godoy and Ignacio Espumado. Vanidad is the opening track from Para Ser Movimiento, their second album, which was recently praised by Mexican pop star Julieta Venegas on her Twitter page. It was released by the Planeta X label in a physical format and as a free Creative Commons licensed download [...]

Every month, MAP (Music Alliance Pact) asks 33 music bloggers (now taking entries from Turkey and Colombia) across the world to share a track from their home country that they think you should hear. My Irish pick this month: Belfast's rockin' Nakatomi Towers . ARGENTINA: Zonaindie Matilda - Vanidad Matilda are an electro-pop duo based in Rosario (one of Argentina's largest [...]
