When I compiled this top twenty list (for Bruce and Heather's 12 X 12 post), I did knocked it out in a hurry, at the end of November. If I could go back now, I would make some changes. The Format would crack the top ten. Damien Rice would move up in numbers. Regina would probably come in second. Greg and Amos would switch seats. Brett Dennen would be voted off the island and replaced by Sonya Kitchell. But it is what it is and hindsight is twenty twenty. No matter how [...]

continuing on with 2006 is overrated , part two spotlights my twelve favorite tracks of the year (part one, with tracks 13-20 and my favorite concerts of the year, is here ) tracks of the year (1-12) 12. the elected : "did me good" mp3 from the lp sun, sun, sun ( subpop ) on an album full of songs that i saw myself in, there [...]
[review 2006: the odds and ends] The good news: Comfort of Strangers is no Daybreaker. The bad news: Comfort of Strangers is no Central Reservation, either. For her fourth studio album, Beth Orton made some sweeping changes. She's completely eliminated any trace of electronica from her music, apparently refashioning herself as a straightforward folk artist. Instead, she's turned to Jim O'Rourke to produce the whole affair, and a small group of musicians to serve as a more traditional backing band. Orton also seems to [...]

anyone remotely familiar with sand is overrated probably knows that i love m. ward . he is a man of many abilities, from his gravelly-voiced hushed tones to his god-like finger-picking, from his impeccable songwriting to his peerless production sensibilities. his many talents have made him highly sought-after in the music world and he seems to be friends with everyone. over the years he has been involved with a number of collaborative projects, including a monsters of folk super-tour with conor oberst of bright eyes and jim james of [...]
( Photo by Neil Wykes ) A while ago I was given a duplicate Beth Orton album when my sister got married. I've listened to it once. In the background. At work, where blandness is appreciated. You see, Beth Orton kind of gives the impression that she's going to be as bland as, say, Dido, and while this may or may not be justified, I just don't see it's worth the effort. It wasn't always like this, you know. In 1997, Trailer Park was a Mercury-nominated debut with big prospects. Being the Mercury [...]

You know how sometimes albums capture a certain time of day? Like when you listen to an album and you can hear a sunrise or hear a mid-day traffic jam? Beth Orton’s Comfort of Strangers sounds like twilight to me. The warmth of both her voice and the mostly acoustic instruments (as apposed to her more “electronic†releases of the past) conjures up images of darkness settling over the land. From the first song (Worms) to the last Northern Sky (I prefer the deluxe edition with a bonus disc), you get the sense that night is [...]
I'm not a huge reader of Paste Magazine but did enjoy the September issue and will most likely add the magazine to my reading list now. As most of the new magazines do these days, the September Paste issue included a CD sampler. It was good exposure to some new bands and I have picked the ones I liked best. Let me know what you think and like the most in the comment section. mp3 Ghostriders
Beth Orton has cancelled her planned UK tour, on account of having done it with a man and getting a baby stuck inside her belly . Her date with Bert Jansch on Septemeber 29th will still take place, but as she gets near her due date she's taking doctor's advice to put her feet up and concentrate on eating bootees and knitting coal. She's issued a statement which insists there's nothing to worry about. music beth orton

So last night's post led me directly to tonight's post. Not having listened to Beth Orton in ages, I was drawn to another song I'd not heard in an age. From the debut album by The Chemical Brothers , this is the final track. The comedown track. The chill out track you might say. To some extent anyway. After 40 odd minutes of pounding big beats have thumped your skull into submission, this track flys in like a nurse with some antisceptic wipe, a handful of cotton wool and a roll [...]

I remember when Beth Orton was good. That's not to say she isn't good now. It's more that she's just not very interesting anymore. You'd probably still listen to her songs if they were on. Maybe hum along. Think to yourself, "this is pleasant" . The problem is, I no longer get to that point because I just don't put her cd's on in the first place anymore. There's other people doing a similar thing now. And sadly they do it better. Nina Nastasia to name but one. Beth Orton just [...]

Listening to CP18 , I remembered I used the Beastie’s song “In 3s†on an old summer mix. I dug it out and got it ready for your enjoyment. The mix of tunes is nearly as hot as the weather. (I guess I was into Python’s Holy Grail when I made this.) 1. Beastie Boys ~ In 3s 2. Beth Orton ~ Daybreaker 3. Erin McKeown ~ Slung Lo [...]
Agnew and Co. have just put one hundred more tickets on sale for Sleater-Kinney's farewell show at the StaR5 Ballroom next Monday, July 31st. But hey, don't take my word for it...
Suffice it to say that we're unbearably excited to see Shearwater tonight at Emo's. If you didn't catch them on this tour, there's a neat live session up at Dutch radio station VPRO from late 2005 (you might remember them as the hosts of the brilliant Extra Glenns live set that's also been circulated 'round the interschitzel). Green Pea-ness beat me in gushing over The Long Blondes' "Fulwood Babylon" (produced by Erol Alkan). It is, in short, WICKED FANTASTIC. Everyone surely knows by now that I adore weird [...]

I can think of few better ways to end a lazy Sunday than with this great, laidback duet between Beth Orton and Terry Callier . I love everything about this song. The effortlessness of the instrumentation. The reassurance of the lyrics. And I would write something witty and insightful about how these 2 uniquely different voices come together and blend into a wonderful mix. But it's late and besides, Beth Orton herself described it so well on the EP's notes. I asked Terry, [...]

So I'm a little behind. I promise a March edition next week so we can get caught up. Anyway, here are the records I think are worth owning from February 2006. As always, while I support buying direct from the label, you can also browse online or at your local record store . February: Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies Destroyer - "European Oils": mp3 Destroyer's Rubies , to me, is easily the best [...]
