Frank Yang A number of things I hadn't done in a while: gone to a show; gone to a show at The Horseshoe; gone to a show whose bill was filled with bands I'd never seen before. Friday night, I kicked off Labour Day weekend by addressing all three of these things by seeing London's Male Bonding , Austin's Love Inks and locals Neon Windbreaker and Huddle . At the 'Shoe. In case that wasn't clear. This isn't to say I had no backstory with the bands. I [...]

Thanks to my father's determination to visit all 50 US states in his lifetime, we've just returned from a short vacation, and as is our practice here at Cover Lay Down, that means a feature with a regional focus. Previous Vacation Coverfolk sets took us to California , the Carolinas , Memphis , and more; this week found us in Nebraska, and so we turn to the work of a particularly influential musician with a decidedly midwestern origin. Ladies and Gentlemen: Conor Oberst, aka Bright Eyes . [...]

World class DJ Sander van Doorn is one of the most underrated producers out there. With his recently destructive set at Ultra comes his latest hit Love Is Darkness (video below). It's his first ever vocal infused tune, featuring songwriter Carol Lee of infamous Dutch alternative rock band Bettie Serveert . Carol Lee pours her heart out in Love Is Darkness, expressing her inner emotions about love and romance. Then Sander throws some of his signature groove in, and we've got ourselves a winner... almost. What made Love [...]
Nothing did more to further the cause of Alternative Nation-building than 120 Minutes, MTV's Sunday-night video showcase of non-mainstream acts. For nearly two decades, the program spanned musical eras from '80s college rock to '00s indie, with grunge, Britpop, punk, industrial, electronica and more in between. MAGNET raids the vaults to resurrect our 120 favorite [...]

"No help topics found?! You heap of garbage. You can't help me with that?" -- Tom, criticizing his unresponsive Macintosh computore "Without his tireless efforts, this show would not exist. Well, actually, it would exist, but it would really stink." -- Tom, praising the production work of David in D.C. "Yeah, the guy dances around and smokes cigarettes. Puts that, uh, clown makeup on in the mirror. Gets heart surgery." -- Tom, figuring out Fosse "What are you talking about ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?" -- Neil Mahoney, [...]

[Chart toppers Superchunk live at Royale, Boston, MA. 9/21/2010. Photo by Michael Piantigini. More here .] Here it is, New Year's Eve, and I'm finally turning in my year-end list. TO MYSELF! As you may have read , El Jefe Jay Breitling will be on hiatus for a few months tending to undercover work for his secret, non-blogging identity and I'll be attempting keep up with the entire universe of music (or at least some subset thereof) for the duration. I appreciate Jay's trust that I won't turn this into some weirdo NFL coach-spouse [...]
Bettie Serveert - Deny All Buy US: Buy UK:

Frank Yang With a wealth of options on the Toronto social calendar last Friday night, I rather feared that posting up Lee's Palace might draw the short end of the stick. I didn't know how much draw Junip would have, but I needn't have worried. With their main attraction - frontman José Gonzalez - having not released a new record under his own name in some three years, there was apparently a good amount of pent-up appetite to see and hear him in any configuration. Happily, this resulted in a [...]

Great music and musicians will always persevere. Dutch indie-rock band Bettie Serveert released their debut album, Palomine in 1992. At a time when every label and magazine was looking for the next big things, they were an obvious candidate. Composed of Carol van Dyk (vocals and guitar), Peter Visser (guitar), Herman Bunskoeke (bass) and Berend Dubbe (drums), they wrote fantastic hooks and had a reputation for their white-hot live performances. Touring with bands like Belly, Dinosaur Jr, Buffalo Tom, Superchunk, Come and Jeff Buckley they grew an audience that appreciated their passion. While the fervor [...]

Top 7 shows on a criminally overbooked night on which Buzz Bands could hit any of 10 shows and have a very good time: ☛ Tim Booth and James , whose music occupied a special place in our soundtrack to the '90s, is back with a good new album "The Morning After the Night Before." They play the Music Box supported by vastly underrated (but maybe not for long) U.K. singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt . ☛ Corin Tucker, whose music in Sleater-Kinney, occupied a special place in our soundtrack to the '90s (and a [...]
Filed under: The Hit List There are more than 60 artists on Matador Records' 'Matador at 21' six-CD retrospective. There are 26 playing the New York indie label's birthday concerts in Las Vegas Oct. 1 through 3. When you've put out nearly a thousand records, not every band can make the cut. Every longtime Matador fan can name at least one artist that they wish was [...]

Eva Vermandel At first, no one even believed it was happening. Apocalyptic Montreal post-rock godheads Godspeed You! Black Emperor , basically inactive since touring behind 20022s Yanqui u.x.o. ceased and presumed defunct, out of nowhere announced they were reconvening to curate an All Tomorrow's Parties in the UK in December 2010. And in typically cryptic Godspeed fashion, the accompanying press release mentioned that there would be additional dates in the UK and Europe and "9 American towns" but offered no further details. Of [...]

MySpace When the Matador 21 was announced back in the Summer along with the fact that it would feature performances from label alumni past and present, I thought for sure that Holland's Bettie Serveert would be part of it. Though never one of Matador's flagship bands, they had a good, three-album run with them in the '90s and with the release of their latest Pharmacy Of Love , were planning their first US tour in many years for this Fall - surely the two would be intersecting. [...]

Frank Yang About midway through last night's show at the Horseshoe, Mystery Jets frontman Blaine Harrison mentioned that earlier that day, they'd learned their US visas had fallen through and as such, this show could have been the first, last and only date on their already-short North American tour. Certainly not news any band who had hauled themselves and no small amount of equipment across an ocean would want to hear. But rather than let it dampen their spirits, the English four-piece channeled any frustrations into an impressive show that, if it turned out [...]
