Last night, a motley crew of stage and screen stars paid tribute to newly resurgent pop legend Prince at NYC's Carnegie Hall. Among the performers: D'Angelo, the Waterboys, Elvis Costello, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Talib Kweli, Sandra Bernhard, Nina Persson (the Cardigans), the Blind Boys Of Alabama, Betty Lavette, and Fred Armisen, who has played the Purple One on SNL for almost a decade. The Roots were the backing band all night, and $100,000 was raised for music education charities. LaVette covered "Kiss," Waterboys did "Purple Rain," D'Angelo sung "It's Going To Be A Beautiful Night," [...]

Eén van haar beste albums is 'I've Got My Own Hell To Raise', een albums vol covers of liever gezegd; reïnterpretaties. Zij zingt daarop louter repertoire van andere zangeressen, Sinead O'Connor (I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got), Fiona Apple (Sleep To Dream), [...]

Fiona Apple: Sleep To Dream [ purchase ] Bettye LaVette: Sleep To Dream [ purchase ] It's hard to find a better transitional song to get us from sleep to dream than Fiona Apple's half-chanted declaration of feminist self-reliance and confidence. Unless it's Bettye LaVette's incredibly soulful transformation of it, which brings an awesome grit and determination to what had been a poppy, almost petulant charter. Though I'm [...]
Top 4 ways to keep that summertime adrenaline pumping: ☛ Jets Overhead have jetted in from Canada — that's their new video for "I Should Be Born," above — and since I've advocated for them before, I'll do it again. They play the Roxy on a KROQ Locals Only bill (hmm, KROQ now reaches all the way to Vancouver? That's impressive) with true locals Italian Japanese , Sea of Cortez and Sabrosa Purr . Good bill, and to celebrate, here's a download of "I Should Be Born." [...]

Al Green Plays the Greek on Saturday I made it out to the Bootleg last Wednesdy for Division Day and The Joy Formidable . The venue was packed. Division Day sounded great, making me wish they'd start playing a lot of shows again. The Joy Formidable quickly won over the crowd. The band was tight, loud and Ritzy (the lead singer) had a ton of charisma. Also caught the very tail end of These United States at Spaceland on Friday night. Monday [...]
Well, I'm sitting in my apartment in downtown Oakland, looking outside, waiting for all hell to break loose. And, if the entire city doesn't burn to a crisp tonight, I'm going to check out some of these shows! Thursday, July 8th Marina & The Diamonds at 330 Ritch St (Popscene) As sad as we are [...]
Before I even did a mix dedicated to delta blues , I was determined to do a mix of vintage soul. At the time I was obsessed with the Numero Group 's Eccentric Soul series (I still am), and it the first pass I took at doing a soul mix was too single-sourced to merit posting. My knowledge of soul is ever expanding from a number of sources - hip-hop samples , Mississippi Records' tape series , and good old self-motivated research - so it was just a matter of time [...]
You guys remember that if you follow one of those links to Amazon.com and purchase something, I earn a commission, right? Because I don't just post those links to prove I know how HTML code works. I mean, that's part of the reason, but it's not the whole reason. Oh, and if you're reading this, I wasn't found dead of autoerotic asphyxia this morning. Good job, me! And also, better luck next time! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of web space, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be [...]
We enjoyed snippets from the new Shel Silverstein tribute album this morning for sure, but if you’re like me, a free MP3 is still where it’s at. Here are a few standout tracks from the download queue today… Rufus Wainwright dropped the opening track from his forthcoming album , All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, at Stereogum . Stream/download “Where Are You New York?” here . Betty LaVette covered the Rolling Stones’ “Salt of the Earth,” and Paste Magazine (whose taste in Tumblr [...]
Nothing important to speak of today. I saw that fucking safecount pop-up ad again today, so I've written several angry e-mails to both the Adify Corporation and the MOG Music Network in the hopes that one of them will confess to ruining your recent visits to this website. I apologize again for any inconvenience these annoying ads have caused you, and hope they will not deter you from coming back in the future. If I have to suck it up and cancel my advertising accounts (which will result in me losing some much-needed income) I'll do it, if only to [...]

What's good, soul children? If you're not hyped already, all you have to do is tune into the frequency we're transmitting and prepare for flight. For today... Live from Souled On California... I proudly present the majestic sounds of the almighty KinG . Hold on a minute, though~ before I send this out into the funky universe, I got a story to tell... Biggie -style... A few light years ago, this virtual stranger named KinG (aka Sherwin Keith Rice ) asked me for some feedback on a beat tape he'd [...]

The perennially moody Fiona Apple recently recorded a cover of Cy Coleman's 'Why Try To Change Me Now' for a tribute EP, "Then Was Then & Now Is Now". It was great to hear something new from her. It's Fiona doing what she has mastered at. An introspective jazzy ditty for those rainy days. I hope she is in a studio somewhere working on some new music. It's been 4 years since 'Extraordinary Machine'. Fiona Apple - Why Try To Change Me Now [...]

Dan Auerbach "My Last Mistake" 2/10 - Nonesuch So we just happen to be on a major soul music kick recently. We've been rocking some Staple Singers, Betty LaVette and numerous Eccentric Soul records. Not to mention, we've been spinning the Stanley Brothers' Sweeter Than the Flowers pretty hard of late as well. So when we read the PR about the new Dan Auerbach record Keep It Hid , we were psyched. While we're checking the box every [...]
