Neil Young is one of those musicians, that ironically enough, I lump in the same category as Johnny Rotten (AKA John Lydon) of The Sex Pistols. Someone whom I have immense respect for as a musician and a cultural force, but try as I might, I honestly can't stand the sound of their voice. The dynamic is as such that I can only stomach his work when it is covered by someone else; The Pixies, Saint Etienne, whomever, just not him. Heart Of Gold , great example. Beautiful piece that, but I'd rather sit in [...]

Bettye LaVette - Most Of The Time (Bob Dylan cover) (from Chimes of Freedom: Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International )

M83 / photo by Dave Lichterman When the weather starts getting better in Seattle, so do the shows. This week we start with a great show at the Crocodile with School Of Seven Bells and Exitmusic , Tanlines are at Neumos, and the first of two nights begins with Bettye LaVette at Jazz Alley. On Wednesday, DJ Shadow is at Showbox at the Market, Matthew Sweet plays "Girlfriend" in its entirety for the first of two nights at the Triple Door, Frankie Rose and [...]

Eén van haar beste albums is 'I've Got My Own Hell To Raise', een albums vol covers of liever gezegd; reïnterpretaties. Zij zingt daarop louter repertoire van andere zangeressen, Sinead O'Connor (I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got), Fiona Apple (Sleep To Dream), [...]

Keeping with the vintage toons, here's another mostly soul mix for your listening pleasure. FYI - that's Inez Foxx on the cover. January 2012 Mix 01 Dionne Warwick - You're Gonna Need Me (1973) 02 Mable John - No Love (1960) 03 Gladys Knight & The Pips - Didn't You Know (You'd Have to Cry Sometime) (1969) 04 Barbara & The Browns - It Hurts Me So Much (To Be Able To Look And To [...]

Between October 13th and 16th, DeLuna Fest 2011 hits the beautiful shores of Pensacola Beach, FL for a weekend of music from big-name acts like The Shins, Weezer, Cake, Jane's Addiction, Cut Copy, Big Boi, Matt & Kim, Girl Talk, Cold War Kids, Manchester Orchestra, The Sounds, Airborne Toxic Event, New Pornographers, Stars, Wanda Jackson, Bettye LaVette, Kermit Ruffins, and more bands than there is sand on a beach. If spending a cold October weekend basking in the sun at the "first resort destination festival" in the country sounds like a welcomed respite, then you're in luck: [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases Rick Diamond/WireImage Steve Cropper was amazed to learn recently that he has played on more than 3,000 records. Many of those have been stone classics, such as Otis Redding 's '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay,' Wilson Pickett 's 'In the Midnight Hour' and Sam and Dave 's 'Soul Man,' on which Sam Moore famously hollered "Play it, Steve!" [...]

A not-so-sunny Sunday brings us edition 62 of Wild Weekend , which this time around features two brand new acts, a reggae classic complete with mondegreen, and a lost lofi Dutchman to boot. Is that wild or what? Gonna start with the gorgeous Bettye LaVette though, as I just bought a much recommended collection of the soul diva's late sixties Memphis recordings with the Dixie Flyers. Thirteen songs and not a dud between them, with We Got To Slip Around my current fave. "You've got another woman, and I've [...]
When DeLuna Fest premiered in 2010, no one could have foreseen that it'd be during a period when the Gulf Coast region was ravaged by one of the biggest eco-disasters in recent history. Despite premiering a festival against those adverse conditions, the Pensacola Beach, FL-based festival proved a success with a lineup featuring Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, and Ed Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes. For its sophomore year, DeLuna Fest now prides itself as a "resort destination festival" and boasts an initial lineup made up of musical heavy weights and up-and-comers. Set [...]

We keep our eyes peeled for new tour dates announcements each week and compile them on Tuesdays for this handy column… For an artist that has seemingly played everywhere and has been apart of a number of historic concerts over the last 40+ years, the one thing that Bob Weir has never done is a proper solo acoustic tour. Well come this summer the former Grateful Dead and current Furthur singer-guitarist can cross that off his bucket list as he will head out for a five-date theater run that kicks off at [...]
![[Beale Street Music Festival 2011] A Preview / My Recommendations](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3399686_lg.jpg)
The annual Memphis in May Festival has grown considerably over the last 35 years, and no portion of it moreso than the Beale Street Music Festival . One of the longest-running music festivals in the U.S., Beale Street Music Festival had it's humble beginnings right down on Beale Street in 1976 & has grown consistently every year since. Boasting a lineup which has been described by nearly everyone I've talked to as "The best variety of performers Beale Street Music Festival has ever had", the 35th annual festival lands at [...]

Bettye , live, the other day in "la sala Caracol" (Madrid), performing Pete Townshend's "Love Reign O'er Me". There's interpretations, and there is "interpretations": You can listen to, and get your personally signed copy of Bettyes latest album "Interpretations - The brittish rock songbook".

Back when I started doing these mixes every month, I saw it as a manageable way to keep recommending music without the effort that it takes to do a researched, singular writeup. It seemed to me that picking out 10 random songs wouldn't be all that hard - I always have new things that I'm listening to, as well as my entire musical upbringing to highlight. A part of the experienced mixtaper in me was never satisfied with these as "mixes." For one, there is only so much you can do in 10 songs... they really seemed more like [...]
