Awesome. Shawn: Day Two. I woke up around 11am and caught a $1 bus back to downtown Austin and check out what kind of trouble I was going to get in. Now let me kind of explain how SXSW works in case you're not familiar. During the day, all bets are off. You can pretty much walk into any bar or venue in downtown Austin TX and catch a free show as long as you have ID. No RSVP (even though some places ask you to), no badges or wristbands, and free, yes [...]
I'm going to see Miles Kurosky later tonight. As a massive Beulah fan, I'm pretty psyched for this one. Though it has taken more listens than expected, his new album is finally starting to grow on me. I can't wait to see how some of the more-overstuffed songs from the new album are interpreted in a live setting. Aw, who am I kidding - I'm just going in the hopes of hearing some old Beulah songs. In particular: Yeah, that's the stuff. Moving [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars When Beulah called it quits many thought this might be the last we had heard of Miles Kurosky . He hid under the radar for a little bit, but the instrumental orchestrations within his mind eventually won out, encouraging Miles to take to the studio once again. The Desert of Shallow Effects is his first solo album, and while it doesn't stray too far from his previous works, it serves as [...]

Miles Kurosky, thank God, remains incapable of writing a bad song and staggeringly capable of writing great ones. The former Beulah frontman spent the seven (!) years following Beulah’s 2003 swansong, Yoko , in and out of the hospital and slowly piecing together his solo debut, The Desert of Shallow Effects - a long wait, and one that couldn’t help but come with expectations. But Desert is a stellar record, as good and weird and unaffectedly catchy an indie-pop effort as the genre’s seen in recent years. [...]
The Miles Kurosky Comeback Tour continues with this puppet-packed clip for The Desert of Shallow Effects jam "Dog in the Burning Building." Beulahphiles can catch the singer at Amoeba Hollywood on March 11 and at the Echo on April 7, as well as at SXSW, where I will attempt to see him play 12 times or until I pass out.
Beulah were once the best band in the world, in my eyes, and in many ways I still have similar feelings for them. Their singer and main songwriter Miles Kurosky will be releasing his debut solo-album in March, and this is his first video. The video is for the song "Dog in the Burning Building" , and it's made by Fran and Will Krause.

Welcome to the Musical Pairings @ eating/sf: february mix. This one features a lot of the music that I've been listening to since the first of the year - except that I left Spoon , Yeasayer and Sleigh Bells off (primarily since they have already been gracing these pages a lot in the past few weeks). I think there is a fair amount of great new music on here - as well as a few old favorites including a couple that I'd dug out following conversations with friends or through listening to their mixes. [...]

Photography "Born In A Bottle Rocket" by Tsuru , Model by Isabella Misery Well it's time for the weekend. Finally, right? Can I get a high-five? Sweet. What you doing this weekend? Looks like more snow here, so my riding will be relegated to The Tank . BUT, if that good lard's a-willin' and the creeks don't rise, Tuck and I will be driving out the route [...]

Photography by Elle Well... The weather outside is frightful, but the fire's soooo delightful. I wish there was no place to go today, but alas & alas, here we are and here we must be, no snuggling in a bed all day for us today. As the French say, "kest le vye, kest le vye", that's life man. One thing about the snow, it's keeping me indoors on the various stationary bikes. Not cool. BUT, made the most of it and did my first product review [...]
With former Beulah frontman Miles Kurosky's extremely rad solo debut and an accompanying tour imminent, now's the time to catch up on his old gig. A Good Band Is Easy To Kill is a good, if not quite I Am Trying To Break Your Heart -level look at Beulah's final tour and eventual split. The performances, including one at L.A.'s Troubadour, are excellent, but #kidstoday may be surprised to see what life was like for a touring band 10 years into a career on the eve of the Great Indie Rock Paradigm Shift Of 2004. (Buy it [...]
In this week's edition of From the Closet we bring you the band Beulah . I was fortunate enough to catch them for the second time on their final tour for their album Yoko. Needless to say, I was quite a fan of the group; their blend of sunny pop fused with horns and perfect backing vocals just fit that time of my life. I still travel back in time with their classic record The Coast is Never Clear , which everyone really needs to have in their collection; you [...]
I'm down to the top 20 albums of the decade, and so here are numbers 20 through 11. I have a feeling that this part of the list might start to deviate from what people were expecting (if it hasn't already). Either way, I hope you're checking out any albums that you were previously unfamiliar with, even if that means just listening to a 30 second sample to see if it's something you think you might like. 20 [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Movies When Michael Cera stars in an indie teen comedy, you can expect the film to have a soundtrack that would make any hipster happy. Like ' Juno ' and ' Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist ' before it, the music to the upcoming ' Youth in Revolt ' delivers an array of indie bands that haven't quite hit the mainstream yet. What makes the 'Youth in Revolt' soundtrack different is its diversity. Naturally, there's plenty of indie rock from [...]

There are at least 17,000 post-millenial songs in my various hard drives. I listened to every single one of them yesterday afternoon, and picked out the fifteen best songs. Some things: - The first half of the second sentence above is a complete lie. I actually spent about an hour on this. - This is obviously not in any way comprehensive, as I have neither the time nor inclination to make some massive, 500 song list that would better represent the music of the decade. My sole objective was to make a mix that flowed [...]
Hefner & Murry the Hump, The Point, Oxford, 15 April 2000 Beulah, Butterflies of Love & Pluto Monkey, The Point, Oxford, 21 April 2000 Encouraging thought the launch of ATP was, 2000 was the year of the schmindie credit crunch. Later in the year I was sent not one but two books giving retrospective accounts of Alan McGee's Creation Records. The Creation model--that one Oasis would fund investment in dozens of long-shot indie weirdos, one or two of which might become another [...]

The second installment of A Retrospective, in which I recap my favorite albums released from 2000 to 2008, this time: 2001. Wrought with turmoil and watching a life fall apart as so many others were having similar experiences but in a different manner; that was 2001 for you. The year I turned 21 (hence the wine bottle photo above). A year that lives in infamy. Young or old, we all seemed to grow up that year. Music, too seemed to progress in ways unthought, even before that fateful day. [...]
Initially I thought I'd compile a bright playlist of songs about the sun to help combat the blahs that's sure to inflict many of us this fall and winter. But, as I started plucking tracks from my collection, I discovered that a majority of the songs avoid using the sun as a symbol of positivity, or of they do, it's to bemoan the lack of it. So much for trying to cheer you up!
This episode is one we've been planning for a while. It's a Danger Radio response to acts like Bon Iver, Devandra Banhart, Fleet Foxes and pretty much anyone with a beard and an acoustic guitar. PLAYLIST: A Lover Sings - Billy Bragg (on Emusic ) Dimmest Star - The Pernice Brothers (on Emusic ) New Love Grows On Trees - Peter Doherty (on Amazon ) Earlies - Trashcan Sinatras (on Amazon ) A Great Parker - The Lucksmiths [...]
Miles Kurosky's proper LP will see daylight in March via Shout Factory! Visit Miles Kurosky on MySpace. MP3: Beulah - What Will You Do When Your Suntan Fades?

Lucy Hamblin Ridiculous webhosting issues persist, so this one will be kept reasonably brief - who knows how long this window of opportunity of my site being up will remain. I've actually been told that the issues that've plagued the site for the past week or so have been resolved and am hoping that's the case, but if'n you find that things are unbearably slow or down altogether, swing by my Twitter for all sorts of colourful cursing. While downloadable/streamable/watcha ble online sessions are becoming much more commonplace, MySpace Transmissions is setting [...]
