Ovals & Emeralds , the new EP from Bibio , is full of disorienting growths of sublime field recordings, toy-chest noises, and coarse synths. On this follow-up to the superb Vignetting the Compost , Bibio's signature creekside guitar is only present on two of the tracks, but here he has crafted his ambient work to equal perfection. The sun goes down on his usual idyllic pastoralism to bring out a bleaker landscape with a slightly menacing air to it like the meditations of Wolfgang Voigt. Amidst the wall of [...]

The whole notion that 'sound', or any combination there of, is inherently art is bullshit. A small but growing audience of music fans have, for some reason, allowed themselves to be duped into believing that music can take shape in a discordant, arrhythmic mix of sounds if you just let yourself go. I've actually come to this conclusion using my limited powers of deduction. My only evidence that such an audience exists is the subject of this review: Bibio's [ Myspace , Official ] Ovals & Emeralds EP . [...]

This week's top shelf, Egyptian Hip Hop! The Hip Hop are a quartet made up of two members of New Ears favourites Copycats (now on long term hiatus), Nick and Alex, Manchester's answer to Bibio / Banjo Or Freakout - Leveret (seriously good stuff) - and Louis. We were lucky enough to host their debut live show last month, which although unfortunately sans Leveret's drumming, was a stirring synthpop success. Note to any egyptians out there with an interest in hip hop - get yourself some shows in Rusholme - there [...]

A five song compilation made from 5 star material from my itunes. + Starts of with The Alps a side project of Tarantel's Jefre Cantu-Ledesma 's with two gents Scott Hewicker and Alexis Georgopoulos. Off their brilliant psychedelic/ krautrock/ drone LP called A Path Through the Moon . What a combination! + Next up is the French Zeuhl/Prog band Eskaton with 83's Fiction. It's a hell of an LP but this tune is a special one with dem vocals. + Bibio is the [...]

Remember Drivers Education in High School, and being subjected to video tapes that were produced in the 1970's and the audio tracking on said videos always sounded wonky - not to mention just straight out weird? We'll upon first listen to Bibio's latest release, "Vignetting The Compost", that was the first image that popped into my mind and made me smile. That alone is worth a post in my opinion. Bibio fuses folk sentiments with soundscapes and dashes of electronic elements. This album is ripe for spring, the songs on this album just brim of sunshine and rolling [...]

Theme for today: Texture Wilco 's greatest hired gun returns with the newest installment to his vast catalogue. It is hard to compare this record to others I have heard that he has been involved with, because all of them have been completely different, but this one seems to be the most reserved in terms of his shredding abilities I have come across. Instead of simply utilizing feats of technical prowess like the typical solo guitar record, [...]

Bibio is Stephen Wilkinson, a young composer, producer, and folk auteur from Black Country central England. He has a new record on Mush, called Vignetting the Compost. In it he seems to be splitting time between field recording bugs, winds, lake shores, and all manner of small flapping things, and pillaging Incredible String Band recordings. It's a lovely lofi wistful piece of artifice the affect of which is not unlike that of The Books, where existential innuendo and aimless nostalgia are housed in the body of a wizened old twanger. That said, [...]

Bibio's Vignetting The Compost sounds like a combination of ambient and experimental artists I highly enjoy. The use of loops, drone and found sounds generate some very dreamy atmosphere... sort of a cross between Lawrence English and Pajo. In addition, the album has that outdoorsy and nature sensation of Our Sleepless Forest and the colourful and imaginative creativity of Shugo Tokumaru. Mr. & Mrs. Compost [wicked-cool song] Weekend Wildfire [wicked-cool song] Torn Under The Window Light [...]
Last Tuesday, Stephen Wilkinson , better known as Bibio , finally released his 3rd full-length Vignetting the Compost on Mush Records . I've been feverishly awaiting this album since rumors of it first began circulating last fall, making due with the tease of his absurdly intricate Clark remix from 2007's Ted EP . If you've never checked out Bibio before (I forgive you in advance) this is a great opportunity to get acquainted, because here he makes good on all [...]

Bibio - Everglad Everglade Bibio is back! The acoustic equivalent of Boards of Canada (who describe him as "the antidote to the modern laptopia of pristine electronic music") has returned with a sound that's more pastoral, more vocal...but still featuring that trademark ghostly guitar sound. Nostalgic magic. Vignetting The Compost is out now on Mush records. MySpace Official Previous Posts: Bibio Photo by moiracore Posted in [...]

on a long bus journey a friend & i made playlists for each other & did a music player swap. he wanted to read at the same time so requested songs without words, less distraction. playlist made, i forgot all about it until a few weeks ago following a discussion with some friends about the merits of lyrics vs no lyrics, and the way that you can build your own stories up out of the music, let your imagination run wild with it. as i went to sleep that night i listened to the playlist i had made and now [...]

MP3: Nic Dawson Kelly - The Musician The musician. The lost art of whistling. A rough sort of classy folk. The shallow end of meaning reveals the music scene, rejection and mistakes made - in an admirable way. But adventure into the murky deep end and I am more likely to find myself travelling down a steep and narrow cobbled street, peering into a doorways down the way and hearing Nic Dawson Kelly playing, whistling and singing in every single one. "The Musician" feels antiquated, sorrowful and every so slightly [...]
Eleanor Meredith's work all but waved to me. I don't quite remember: perhaps it was a solitary mer-man, winking on his rock. Perhaps a mess of line & colour, like that dizzy moment just before you fall in love. She's an artist and illustrator who lives in Scotland and makes whimsy feel like something you could be serious about. Nothing makes me happier, she writes, than drawing people without them realising. I asked her to choose two or three favourite songs, and make pictures for them. She did. We've had many artists share their work with us, but I'm not [...]

Lymbyc Systym - Birds (zShare) Lymbyc Systym - Truth Skull Lymbyc Systym 's debut full-length, Love Your Abuser, is out now on Mush Records . Despite the vaguely sadomasochistic implications of the title, these instrumentals are richly textured, tempo shifting pop. Particularly on "Birds," we find swelling percussion sections breathing life into simple keyboard melodies, creating songs that bloom and recede with seamless precision. If you like what you hear, Montreal's Hylozoists are making similarly serene instrumentals. Hylozoists - Strait is [...]
