A sense of the subdued lingers come Sunday and it's not until Omar Souleyman teases the fragile from the throes of both slumber and splintering headache on the Main Stage that many beings are encountered. Like a snake charmer beguiling a pit of serpents with processed Korg frenetics, his wearied disciples slowly but surely cross the mudded planes of Robin Hill Country Park, dressed in suriyahs and tea towels, to raise their slithering arms towards Souleyman. Introduced by a stern translator in suit and shades, Souleyman eventually emerges, clenches his microphone between arm and torso, and begins to [...]

Editor's Note: Like last year, we decided to have two writers go this year and provide two perspectives of this year's Outside Lands Music Festival. We have myself and local comic personality, Ivan Hernandez. So enjoy our little journey through San Francisco's largest and most popular music festival. IVAN : The 2011 Outside Lands festival was going to great by virtue of line-up alone. How many weekends could there ever be in which you could see The Black Keys, The Roots, Arcade Fire, Latyrx, and a host of other bands perform in Golden Gate Park? With [...]

As gaggles of adolescents attached to backpacks filled with plastic waterproofs and dismayingly permeable macs head for Richfield Avenue and Bramham Park over the August bank holiday weekend bender, a brief and bleary-eyed glimpse around the Eurostar departure lounge on a chilled Friday morn suggests forever more buccaneers of Blighty are heading for Parisian banlieues and more precisely, for Rock en Seine . With the aforementioned iron horse depositing festival goers slap-bang at the beating heart of the French capital in approximately the same time as it takes to reach Leeds' railway gateway, the festival offers the foreign festival [...]

One of the best summer days passed with bright music in a meadow and wood setting in San Francisco, with a capacity crowd of 60,0000 fans.
Big Audio Dynamite is not my favorite band, but they are my favorite band that I never thought I would get a chance to see live. When BAD first broke onto the scene I was about five years old, so I didn't catch them the first time around. In fact, I didn't discover BAD until I got into buying records and 123 singles a few years ago. I know it's an odd ass-backwards way of doing things, but at three bucks, a used 123 is a great low-risk entry point for discovering artists you may not know a [...]

It's been a busy couple of years for former Clash member Mick Jones. After touring with the Gorillaz, Jones reunited Big Audio Dynamite (B.A.D.) earlier this year with stops at The Roxy and Coachella. They are playing most all major festivals and we were lucky enough to have them perform at Club Nokia. Joining Jones, were original members Don Letts, Leo Williams, and Greg Roberts (not sure where Dan Donovan was). B.A.D. was solid as expected with Jones all smiles. Class act. —Debi Del Grande [...]

Big Audio Dynamite played the Twin Peaks stage on Friday at Outside Lands Festival. Our photographer Marcello Ambriz was there to get some great shots of the band. Check them out inside.

What a strange idea: Let's create a world within a metropolis. Whether or not that was the methodology behind Perry Farrell's Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL, remains to be confirmed. However, that's what he's done. Stepping into the gates at Congress and Michigan, one can't help but feel they're about to enter another plane of existence. Yeah, yeah, what a cliché, simplistic statement, but let me ask you this... Over the weekend, did you see: Hall & Oates look-alikes, complete with the leisure suits, dancing in 85-degree heat A "lobster [...]

It's too big, very expensive and full of douchebags. But this year's sold-out Lollapalooza also includes a great mix of shows over three days. Here's the ATYP guide to recommended sets. Girl Talk , Friday. This will be a big party thrown by the mashup master. The throngs will be either at one of the big stages to see Coldplay or Muse . But this show will be more fun.
