Big Bill Broonzy : Ridin' on Down [ purchase ] Talking blues is a style that is often associated with political songs, and with Woody Guthrie. Guthrie did indeed work with the form, and was one of the first to use it for political songs. But Guthrie was adapting an older style that was part of the blues tradition. Pre-Guthrie, these songs related humorous stories, or a series of humorous anecdotes. Ridin' on Down is a fine example. Each verse has a different story, and these may have been adapted from [...]

Last month I announced the end of the In Memoriam column. The reaction, by comments and messages via email and Facebook, surprised me. I had been under the impression, acquired by the few comments they received and the very average hits recorded, that the feature was only mildly popular (which serves to stress the importance to comment on posts in features you enjoy). The labour required for the In Memoriam feature remains prohibitive, but by cutting out what really took a lot of time – researching and collating the music and pictures – I can still provide a [...]
It's no secret to native Texans, but to all you recent immigrants to the Lone Star State may have noticed lately, it's F-ING RELENTLESSLY HOT OUTSIDE! With Temperatures hovering above 100 and no relief in sight, it's hard to stay pleasant. Heat waves and droughts like this one are so damned oppressive, and may make you just feel flat-out angry and depressed at the world, your fellow man, and especially those teasing bastard clouds, hanging there just laughing at us and our collective misery. F those assholes, seriously its thundering as I write this with no rain to show for [...]

Big Bill Broonzy : Trouble in Mind [ purchase ] Jimmy Witherspoon : Trouble in Mind [ purchase ] James Blood Ulmer : Trouble in Mind [ purchase ] Trouble in Mind is a primal blues song. I don't know if anyone knows how old it is. From the lyrics, it could be as old as the railroads, but the versions heard here each present [...]
Rainmaker was Chapman's debut album, released by Harvest in 1969. The album came as a total surprise, as Chapman did not emerged from the boiling melting pot of mid-60's Soho scene, wasn't a part of any interesting 'scene' (unless you include the Leeds jazz scene) and never met Bert Jansch, which is mandatory (he met [...]
Last night's screening of The Room was pretty ridiculous. Crazy kids with handles of hard liquor, weed, and Costco-size boxes of spoons to be hurled back and forth for the duration of the film. It was about as good an experience as I could have hoped for newbies Tom, Nicci and Troy. You can't live in Los Angeles and ignore this shit. It's pretty much the most amazing moviegoing experience that has ever existed. Even if, at 27, you feel like the oldest person in attendance. I updated the official Swan Fungus concert calendar…so, there's that. [...]
A review of Big Bill Broonzy's posthumous compilation "Trouble in Mind."

RULES for uninitiated noobs : I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods [...]

This is one of those low down and dirty blues songs. It covers all the bases, hard work, hard liqueur, and domestic violence. And you have to love that growl in Big Bill's voice on this one. I believe he just wants to be left alone after a hard day of work and drinking.

Numero Group along with WFMU Radio have made available for free download a collection of 60 songs recorded from 1908 through 1980 that tells the story of the history of recorded music in Chicago. The history of recorded music in Chicago during the 20th century was broad and deep, traversing sonic areas both [...]

I have always thought that blues music reflects what is going on in the US well. Right now unemployment is high, this is not the first time that this has happened in this country. And blues musicians have documented it and offered over the years some hope and escape from the frustration of not having a job. The Y! Raddish Blog put together a play list of blues songs about Unemployment. I thought it would be cool to see how many of the videos I could find at YouTube, plus some [...]
