Infamously cantankerous studio rat/national treasure Steve Albini doesn't like to be called a record producer. He prefers the term "recording engineer." That's a dry, clinical term for what Albini actually does, but it makes sense that he'd prefer to be seen that way. Over the past few decades, Albini has overseen the creation of countless numbers of recorded artifacts. And even though he's been an outspoken opponent of the major-label system (and of other underground-rock heroes), he's known to work with just about anyone who requests his services, whether it's a major-label juggernaut like '90s radio-grunge rulers Bush or the [...]
Words by Rick Moslen So this is the series where I ramble on about classic indie/punk record labels fated to feed every music junkie's obsessive fix. This time I'm gushing about possibly the mother of them all. Hold onto your butts and stuff some earplugs up those earlobes, cause it's time for some raw, spazzing rock n'roll from Touch and Go Records. I know what you're thinking ... how can I rope Touch and Go 's extensive yet essential history into a mere blog post? That's like leaving your [...]

Tweet I've misplaced my leg-warmers. Normally this wouln't really bother me - quite the opposite - but I feel naked listening to Big Black Delta without them. The solo side-project of Los Angeles-based Mellowdrone's founding member, Jonathan Bates; BBD knocks out dark, retro electronica that suggests more rock bassists ought to take time off from their day-jobs. Having worked with M83 on a remix of Daft Punk 's "Fall" (from the TRON: Legacy OST), he's seen something of a meteoric [...]

I have already said that Big Black Delta's debut album, "BBDEP13, released in September, is one of the best LPs for 2012. That's why I was so hyped to find out about his collaboration with Polinksi and watch the incredible 702s and 802s sci-fi influenced video Caspar Newbolt & Josiah Newbolt did for "Stitches". The song is taken from Polinksi's debut full length "Labyrinths". The animation was made thanks to Josiah Newbolt, and the pixel art - by John DeLucca.
The video for Polinksi 's "Stitches" featuring Big Black Delta is pretty damn cool. Just watch it. The track is also super catchy, which helps. Taken from the album 'Labyrinths'. Buy here . Tweet This Post

Recent crime-solving video games like L.A. Noire have seen grand success with their intricate story-lines and highly detailed, modern graphics. Electro rocker Polinski , aka the side-project of 65daysofstatic frontman Paul Wolinski, hasn't forgotten the granddaddies of games like that, though, and with his new video for "Stitches" (featuring Big Black Delta), he's crafted them one incredible homage. Forgoing all the bells and whistles of current technology, Polinski, along with director/writer Caspar Newbolt and director/animator Josiah Newbolt (some relation), gives us an old-school text adventure detective story. Murdered dames, [...]

We all get songs stuck in our heads. Sometimes we can't get them out. The best thing to do in this situation?... Embrace the ear worm. BBDLP1 (Coming Home, September 2011)

Lets look at the facts. Ministry's - The Land of Rape & Honey came out 23 years ago today. The governmant has given away trillions of dollars to the banks. So much so they might as well had given each of US born Americans 50 thousand each. We'll never see it and somehow we'll be paying for that as the dept grows day by day. Billion and billions. That's sort of like rape or the gift that keeps giving - ain't it? The best part about industrial music is that it's relentless. There is a punishment. A Pounding drive your [...]
Photography: Luke Byrne I am loving this otherwordly, chaotic, and pretty much genius LP of Big Black Delta to bits. You can get it for free here if you hurry, although I'd gladly buy it any day. Big Black Delta - Capsize Big Black Delta - Betamax

The Smiths Formed: 1982 Disbanded: 1987 Morrissey could bring in the goths, Johnny Marr could bring in the punks, but it was the chemistry they produced together that made the Smiths one of the more iconic bands of the 1980s. When that chemistry began to break down following Strangeways, Here We Come , just as the band was creeping into Top 40 territory in the U.S., the band called things off, leaving resentments between the two that linger to this day. But in addition to leaving a nearly perfect discography, along with [...]

Seemingly just another dull night in the dusty sprawl that is Los Angeles, Monday night was a complete journey for a handful of individuals at Big Black Delta 's debut record release party at The Satellite. If you're an electronic music enthusiast, the name may sound vaguely familiar to you. L.A.'s own Big Black Delta (aka Jonathan Bates) was featured on Daft Punk's Tron Legacy: R3C0NF1GUR3D on the standout remix "Fall", technically listed as M83 v. Big Black Delta. That's right, Big Black Delta come M83 -approved, that fact only further bolstered by [...]
So, remember that episode from Season Three of the MTV show Rob & Big? Well, it inspired us to write a post about stylish big mens clothes . You can see from the clip below, that if you're a big dude? You're probably going to have a hassle with some things in life. Of course, these clothes wouldn't necessarily be a perfect fit for Christopher "Big Black" Boykins, but the search for comfort in life should continue for everyone. Rob Dyrdek is pretty hilarious, but when he actually gets into a fat-suit made by a [...]
Fresh from his reMix of M83's awesome 'Midnight City', Jonathan Bates A.K.A. Big Black Delta has just released his first album, 'BNBDLP1'. It's a brooding affair, often with an Industrial or Experimental slant, but manages to retain a solid groove throughout. Sharing a lot in common with peer M83, the record mixes harsh, distorted sounds with sweet melodies and heartfelt, floaty, vocals, Most of the tracks are driven by machine gun drums and heavy synth bass which juxtapose nicely with the more tuneful elements Big Black Delta effortlessly craft, creating something that could get you going [...]
Have you ever been painting whilst there was a riot outside your window? I have. I was listening to 'IFUCKINGLOVEYOU' by Big Black Delta. It was poignant. It was as chaotic as it was beautiful in equal measures (Try mixing M83 to The Strokes), much like what was on my canvas in contrast to the [...]
Jonathan Bates' formidable foray into electronica — chronicled in our posts on "Huggin & a Kissin" and "Capsize" — comes to fruition this week with the release of his project Big Black Delta's "BBDLP13 (in very pretty vinyl , apparently). The former Mellowdrone frontman's bombastic take on '80s synth-pop has turned more than a few ears in the months since he began leaking songs, and his two-drummers-and-a-barrage-of- LEDs live show is darned near seizure-inducing. You get the idea from the video for "Betamax," but at full volume in a crowded club it's at another [...]

Experimental pop project Big Black Delta released debut LP entitled BBDLP1 yesterday. Take a look at the video directed by Eli Berg for one of the songs included on it, "Betamax". BBDLP1 is a very good album. Duo's tracks somehow remind me of the huge spacey sounds which my favorite Australian act Midnight Juggernauts produce.

[It's a little bit like our Austin showcase, all over again ...] Monday night's tunes: ► Hanni El Khatib (pictured at the Buzz Bands LA party in Austin in March) celebrates the release of his debut album "Will the Guns Comes Out" at the Echo, leading into the final performing of Kissing Cousins' residency. ► Satellite residents Big Black Delta wind up a great month by celebrating the release of their debut "BBDLP1." with Letting Up Despite Great Faults (who also [...]
