Every week we bring you Friday on My Mind , a collaborative effort with King 5 News which explores musical subjects with focus on three artists or bands. February 3rd is the anniversary of what people refer to as "The Day the Music Died" when Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie lost their lives in a plane crash. Today for the Friday on My Mind feature, we choose not to focus so much on the horrible tragdey of that day in 1959, but to celebrate and reflect upon the longstanding impact these young artists made within [...]

Repost: Published in 2009, still of interest today. To this day, people still mourn the musical talent who died in a plane crash in the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 1959. A small airplane, carrying rock stars Buddy Holly, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens, crashed only minutes after taking off from Mason City, Iowa, in a snowstorm. The three had just played the "Winter Dance Party" (see yesterday's post ) and were heading to the next stop in [...]

One of the most famous Texans, Buddy Holly, would've been 75 this year had he not hopped on that horrible little commuter plane in Iowa with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens ( NO, NOT MY RITCHIE ). A special compilation album has been put together by music supervisor, Randall Poster (past works include projects with: Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes), with a list of contributions by some heavy hitters. You can get the latest on the release here and pick it up on June 28th via Fantasy/Concord. BTW, I never saw " [...]
A few months ago we ran a competition giving Cougar Microbes readers a free copy of TuneUp to fix their music collection. We asked the question: If you could rearrange/fix/change any musical moment that has happened in history what would it be? This was the outstanding in our books by a guy called Blue: 1. Light Aircrafts [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Q + A Jay Richardson wasn't even born when his father, the Big Bopper , died in a plane crash in 1959 with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens . But 48 years later, he finally got to see his father face-to-face. When the body of the Big Bopper -- real name J.P. Richardson -- had to be exhumed for a bigger gravesite in 2007, his son used the opportunity to have a forensic anthropologist [...]
Filed under: The Hit List With the long-awaited return of 'Glee' to TV, the question looms: What are they going to sing this season? If you're a Gleek, the possibilities dangle like luscious, tempting fruit. But if you, like Sue Sylvester, think the 'Glee' treatment destroys perfectly good songs, well, you really shouldn't be reading this. Here are the top 10 theme shows 'Glee' should tackle [...]

Filed under: The Hit List No other event in popular culture symbolizes greatness cut short like the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly , along with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper , on Feb. 3, 1959. After all, the pioneering rocker was just 22 when he died, yet he had already amassed a catalog of hits [...]

I've written before about the 1959 plane crash at Clear Lake, which claimed the lives of three rock and roll stars - Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper. I've also written about an eerily-similar accident that occurred a few years later, one involving country music headliners Cowboy Copas and Patsy Cline. But there was a third victim at that crash too, and it's time to tell the story of Hawkshaw Hawkins. Harold Franklin 'Hawkshaw' Hawkins was the personification of an old expression, usually uttered with a touch of awe; he was [...]

Having written recently about the infamous 1959 Clear Creek plane crash that claimed Buddy Holly and the others, I thought it might be worth mentioning one more of the era's singers who also had a connection with the event. You might even say that his long and successful career had its roots in that tragedy. Bobby Vee (real name Velline) was just 16 at the time of the crash, but the young musician was leading his own fledgling group, the Shadows, and appearing in his home town of Fargo, North Dakota. Ironically enough, Fargo was the [...]

I know we hardly (by hardly, I mean never) cover country music here at the ATH. But if you ever feel like giving it a try, Waylon Jennings should be on your short list. The Waylon Jennings legend runs deep. Former bass player for Buddy Holly. Gave up his seat to The Big Bopper the day the music died . Co-founder of the Outlaw Movement . The Balladeer for The Dukes of Hazzard . 1/4 of the supergroup The Highwaymen . So today I present a song from Waylon's finest album, the 1973 classic [...]

I suppose it's just a microcosm of life itself, but pop music is filled with haunting stories and senseless tragedies. One of those occurred in 1959 at Clear Lake, Iowa, when a plane crash took the life of the pilot and his three passengers. It's been immortalized as 'The Day the Music Died', but most of the attention has been focused on the loss of the iconic Buddy Holly or even Chicano rock legend Ritchie Valens . However, there was a third rock star aboard the plane, and even if his music [...]

On Feb. 3, 1959, a Beechcraft Bonanza carrying Buddy Holly , Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper crashed, killing all passengers. Rolling Stone said Holly was the 14th greatest musician in rock , but I say he deserves a much higher place in that pantheon. Without Buddy Holly, a rocking and rolling band might still be nothing but a group of session musicians assembled as a vehicle for a vocalist who will perform songs written by others. From his unique vocal delivery and guitar work to his use of non-rock instruments [...]

Written by Danny Phillips It's hard to believe that today, February 3, 2009, is the 50th anniversary of the plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa, that took the lives of Buddy Holly , Richie Valens ("La Bamba," "Donna," "Let's Go!"), J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson ("Chantilly Lace") and pilot Ron Peterson. Better known as the day the music died. It is hard to believe because it doesn't seem like Buddy has ever [...]
