As the school year came to a close in 1984, synchronistic events were occurring that would shape that summer for me and my friends. By that May, all of us had obtained our drivers licenses, giving us the ability to escape the limited boundaries of our small hometown. The fledgling MTV had become available in our area and, as it still hadn't been co-opted by the major labels, those of us that had access to the channel had exposure to acts that we wouldn't hear on the radio. Those of us without MTV [...]

I keep seeing some television commercial, touting some MMA bout. With bagpipes blaring over fight footage, some participant is in the frame spouting Irish proverbs in an accent that I'm not quite sure is Irish or Scottish. The commercial always causes me to lose the next ten minutes to two hours pondering whether this cat is supposed to be Irish or Scottish and, if he's Irish, should his speil be accompanied by bagpipes. I think of bagpipes, I think Scotland. I also think of a trek to work one summer day. [...]

Eesh, I'm having a serious cringe at that blog title, but hey, it's late at night and my brain is grinding. Tonight is Burns Night , when people all over the world celebrate the life and poetry of late, poet Robert Burns. I've used it as an excuse to post up some songs from some great Scottish musicians and artists. I put a posts out through the Gigantic Facebook and Twitter accounts to get people to suggest their favourite artists. The response has been amazing, and when you start to list all [...]

So, the clocks have been turned back, an act that still is an odd thing to me as I grew up in one of the few swaths of the US that didn't acknowledge such antics. (Paloma is like a ninja somehow resetting all of the numerous timepieces in the treehouse so swiftly, so deftly that I never see her do it, but the feat is accomplished by the time I awake) As the citizens of my hometown were ignoring the changing of the times in autumn, 1984, my friends and I had all reached our sixteenth [...]
Apparently there's this awesome music site called turntable.fm. I run a website called Lost Turntable. Who the hell do I have to talk to get a damn invite to that place? Seems like a travesty of justice to me if I ever heard one. Big Country In A Big Country (Live) I found this on a strange record called Vertigo Sampler. It's a 2LP sampler, with one label each getting a side. Phonogram got the A-side, Beggars Banquet the B-side, Polygram the C-side and [...]
A special Oxegen edition of our weekly feature, whereby our writers and photogarphers share their favourite tracks of the past seven days. Tame Impala - 'Alter Ego' (Chosen by Daryl Keating) It's easy to label Tame Impala as mere copycats who are latching on to the past glories of the late '60s. Yet, in doing so you'd be shamefully understating one of the few contemporary psychedelic rock bands that are genuinely talented. Perhaps people can't get over how much their lead singer, Kevin Parker, sounds like John Lennon. Or maybe there's just no room [...]

![[Introducing] – Bull Thieves](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3289758_lg.jpg)
It's been a while, but I'm really in the mood for something loud and heavy. Luckily I've stumbled across Bull Thieves who are only too happy to provide just the thing I'm looking for. Formed in Brooklyn in 2008 Bull Thieves are Lance Scott Walker (voice, beats, guitar, bass, synths), Nicholas Phelps (guitar, bass, voice) and Task (synths, mixing, beats). The members are all from Texas and a couple of them are even from the same hometown of Galveston. With a shared love of big beats, big guitars and fresh electronics, they wanted to include these [...]
I don't dance. It's something I've never done for fun, fame or financial gain. I've never felt inclined. Though I didn't grow up in that town in Footloose , they're wasn't much dancing in my hometown. I slow danced at prom one year, but I only recall one or two dances being held during four years of high school. Mostly kids just gathered informally in some farmer's field past the outskirts of town with a few kegs procured by older students (who'd make the trek to the state where eighteen was [...]
It's perhaps difficult to sufficiently express just how popular Big Country were for a few years in the mid-1980s. Albums went straight to number 1, there were regular Top of the Pops appearances, they were lauded in music publications from pop paper Smash Hits to the weekly NME and Melody Maker and were also well-liked and respected by many [...]
As Vic has been taking a well earned break after hosting Edinburgh's Hogmanay party with Biffy Clyro, Dear Scotland has been updating the Scotland on Tour database with almost 300 new international shows from Scottish artists as diverse as Primal Scream, Isobel Campbell, Mogwai, Eddi Reader and Nazareth. Check it out below: Scotland on Tour [...]
Big Country, with The Alarm's Mike Peters replacing Stuart Adamson, have announced a Dublin show for next year as part of their reunion tour. They play the Academy on April 19th, with tickets on sale this Friday. Big Country - Chance

When I first started listening to music during the first couple years of the '80s, this new interest meant something to do during the fall and winter when the elements made for longer stretches housebound. Instead of jockeying with my brother for control of the television or Atari 2600 console, I could now opt for self-imposed exile to my bedroom and listen to music rather than read. More music was listened to during the months of less daylight. This might have meant an increased likelihood of burnout and a need to shop for more music. [...]
Filed under: News , Book Club Niki Kanodia Growing up, music and pop culture critic Rob Sheffield had role models both positive and negative. Among the former, he explained Wednesday night, as he discussed his new book, ' Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut ,' at the Barnes and Noble store in Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Park Slope neighborhood, were his sisters. As Sheffield recalled, they would "get all the [...]

I just posted four versions of Woodstock for our Summertime theme , just over a week ago, and here I am again. What gives? Well, Woodstock is in New York, and it is one of Joni Mitchell's signature tunes. But more than that, these two versions add something to the conversation. Each one finds something in the song that the versions I previously posted did not. That's because Joni Mitchell's writing is that rich. Richard Thompson : Woodstock [unavailable for purchase] Richard Thompson should [...]
