So, I wasn't going to post this because I thought it was a little conceded, but screw it, I don't care! Today is my birthday! Although for some reason it doesn't really feel like it… Anyways, here are the essential songs I listen to on my bday! MP3: Groovie Ghoulies – Happy Birthday The Vandals – Happy Birthday To Me [...]

I don't know if anyone remembers, but back in the day, Nickelodeon used to urge kids to say "rabbit rabbit" as the first two words uttered for the month for good luck. (Is this where the belief that it's "cool" to have your indie band name repeated: Man Man, Tapes N' Tapes, Action Action, Chin Up Chin Up… That's right, your scene was founded on Nickelodeon... or 13th century England .) Well, some 120 months later, I FINALLY remembered to say "rabbit rabbit" yesterday. So here's [...]
From the Asian Man Records newsletter: Things continue to be busy as we launch into the re-presses of a lot of vinyl and the first breath of air for tons of releases that never got the vinyl treatment. Here?s a list of what we plan on putting on wax: ALKALINE TRIO-S/T(first time on ...

Well 2007 came and went, and what a year it was... Graduations, moving, birth of housewives, and more ska CDs than you can shake a stick at. Here are my favorite releases of 2007... Indies, before you start complaining "bullshit list!" I'm sure Sasha is gonna put together a different list of here favorites. Besides, I would love to learn all your favorites, what are your top 7 of '07? 7. The Revenge – Less Talk, More Shots Blistering hardcore punk, the way it was meant to be played. [...]

Yes, boys and girls, it's time once again for Santastic! , the third-annual installment of holiday mix-and-mash-ups performed and compiled by the redoubtable djBC . (Fresh from snagging the BMA for " Outstanding DJ .") As always , this year's edition is a corker. For kids who've been waiting for the red-suited man all December, Divide and Kreate 's " Velvet Santa " sets up a rendezvous between a pre-creepy Michael Jackson and a very naughty Lou Reed on [...]

On Thursday, I was supposed to see them and interview them in Philly, but they had to postpone the show... So last night I instead trecked out to the Starland Ballroom to catch one of my all-time favorite ska bands. Brain Failure: Brain Failure took the stage, shouting "WE ARE BRAIN FAILURE FROM BEIJING CHINA!", then immediately blasted into one of their songs. I don't know much about the band, but I'd be willing to call them "The Clash" of China. I don't remember [...]

I'm sorry Big D. You win. Way back in Feb. I gave a less than favorable review of Big D's "Strictly Rude". In it, I never claimed that the album was bad, but I did express my disappointment with the change of style. I've been listening to the album a lot lately, and I must say, I fell in love with it. While it's not my favorite album by Big D (it's going to be hard to [...]

I sound like someone from Simcity 2000 (greeeat game.). "This city has too much traffic". Well, here are a few songs about traffic and not going anywhere, in lieu of my 3.5 hour commute to work today (at least I was only late to work, and nothing actually important.) For me, traffic is one of the greatest tortures possible. Seriously, I think I'd rather be stuck listening to Kelly Clarkson for a few hours than be in traffic (ok, maybe not Kelly Clarkson, but definitely Natasha Bedingfield, and DEFINITELY Journey !) [...]

I've puzzled over this sign ever since I moved to my new neighborhood five months ago. Is the car-washer adorable? Do they only wash adorable cars? Is this a gross misspelling of the word affordable? If anyone has any clue or guess drop me a comment. MP3: Big D and the Kids Table- What? MP3: Elliott Smith- I Didn't Understand MP3: Groovie Ghoulies- My Car MP3: Wilco- Misunderstood Buy: Big D , Elliott Smith , Groovie Ghoulies , Wilco

It takes alot to get me out to a show on a Sunday night but I've been there with Big D since high school and since I missed them on their last tour I figured I'd head out to see their show at the Knitting Factory. The A.K.As were definitely the standout opening act. They played simple punk rock with an amazing amount of energy. Although the band is from Philly they [...]

What do Hitler, Stalin, and Dr. Robotnik all have in common? Ok time up, pencils down. If you answered they are all men, you'd be way off (Robotnik was a robot... duh.) If you answered that they are all "evil", you'd only be partially right. The real connection is that they are all brought together by one thing, and that is an evil mustache. The Vandals completely understand where I'm coming from with this. Here, let me just give you an example of the lyrics: " Mustache is a symbol of repression [...]

The Glass House at Pomona hosted the kick-off party for the Warped Tour this year. The much-anticipated UK buzz band, Gallows, was set to headline the show that night with a couple other acts on the bill, including a "special guest". I made it in time for Big D & The Kids Table, who did a fantastic job reminding me why I ever enjoyed ska. I gotta say that as much as I love me some pop music, the energy that punk and ska artists deliver get me jumping and bouncing and loving that style of music all [...]
