Slothbear Cantor On Album Review ALBUM REVIEW: A Slothbear is what do you get when you mix some mammals and paint in Staten Island which forms the release they call Cantor On . Some may write this part of New York off as just a breeding ground for lap dance vixens but we won't be so narrow minded. We thought we heard something deeper when we featured them in our Crop-O-Singles over the summer and here we are proven right. They do have more moves than a Go-Go dancer! This [...]

Kicking off Halloween month with a few scary rock songs for bad people who like songs about monsters, ghosts and Goblins. A pretty eclectic list of genres mixed in with Psych, Punk and Indie. We'll do another post later in October. Enjoy! [Big Dipper with The Vivs and Count Zero at the Lizard Lounge, Cambridge, MA 9/17/2011. Photos by Michael Piantigini.] Big Dipper has an album pretty much in the can. Will someone please put it out so I can get it? Thank you. -Michael Piantigini Big Dipper: Facebook | Twitter The Vivs: Intertubes | Facebook (their new EP, Why So Dark?, is good stuff!) Big Dipper North East rock was never so eloquently defined than by the alternative music vehicle known as Big Dipper . I meant this to be a follow-up post on the music from City Gardens Riot on the Dance Floor post but needless to say when a group makes a melodic dent like these guys did it's worth one of my retro-posts because a lot of the submissions I'm getting just don't rank. This is though one of those bands I trekked down to Trenton to see opening up [...]
Happy Birthday to underrated songwriter and former Mott The Hoople front man Ian Hunter - featuring cover versions from everyone from Barry Manilow to Great White.

Mars Classroom — New Theory Robert Pollard is a madman. Take a peek at his Discogs page and you'll see upwards of 100 bands he's been involved with, the majority of which are entirely news to me (Ghost Fart? The Moping Swans? ) Couple that with knowledge that he pumps out at least two albums per year, and you've got an iron-clad case for the hardest working man in indie rock. Mars Classroom's New Theory [...]
… on Jan. 25, Pollard released his latest solo album, Space City Kicks, on Guided By Voices Inc. which opened the floodgates on a slew of new releases coming from the ultra-prolific songwriter this year. He recently reunited with former GBV guitarist Doug Gillard for another Lifeguards release, Waving at the Astronauts. That album was [...]

Filed under: News , New Music As they anxiously await Guided by Voices ' New Year's Eve Bash at New York's Irving Plaza, Robert Pollard 's disciples will be stoked to learn that the singer shows no sign of slowing down in 2011. According to Blurt , Pollard has three albums readied for release early next year, including a solo disc he's calling 'Space City Kicks,' plus recordings by Lifeguards, his project with ex-GBV guitarist Doug Gillard, and [...]
I didn't post an entry last night. I was too busy enjoying a birthday dinner with my girlfriend. I know some of you mongoloids see it as an affront whenever I skip a day of blogging, but hopefully you'll understand the circumstances this time. Furthermore, I just don't like you, and I don't give a fuck if you come here every Sunday looking for MP3s. I wanted some good Italian food last night and I was not going to let a silly little website stand in my way. Speaking of which, I got a letter from the city [...]

I came across this Big Dipper 12" single the other day at my local record store. It was still sealed and only a $1.99. What the heck? I remember this 12" from back when it came out in 1987, mostly because of the memorable cover, which was very similar in layout to both Robyn Hitchcock's Element of Light and The Jazz Butcher's Fishcotheque , all of which came out around the same time. But I can't remember if I owned it, or if I had a friend who owned [...]
Back in the mid-80's when Boston's Big Dipper hit the indie music scene they were big stuff. Formed by Gary Waleik and bassist Steve Michener after they left the original lineup of Volcano Suns, the band went on to become college radio darlings with their debut EP and their debut full length, Heavens. To this day, that album remains one of the classic indie-rock albums of its time and the band's

[Above: Memorabilia from the author's own embarrassing archive.] O Positive , who are playing a reunion benefit this Friday night , August 7th, at the Paradise, were the biggest band in Boston in an era where that really meant something. It meant headlining two sold-out shows in one night at the Paradise every six weeks or so, while filling the rest of the time playing every other club in the region. Even the 'burbs supported live original music – can you imagine seeing your Hallelujah the Hills es, your [...]

[ We are pleased to welcome to these electrical pages the reportage of Rock Piantigini, guitarist for the recently resuscitated (but now we believe doubly defunct) indie rock outfit Lump and all-around cool guy. Mr. Piantigini's schedule is full, his taste is impeccable, he is a great shot with a camera, and we are fortunate to have his help filling inches with a new column we are calling Rock Over Boston. As you can see below, Rock had a busy Friday night. -- Ed. ] With the humidity high and the weather threatening the Boston waterfront's [...]

As an addendum to the last post, there's a Homestead compilation called Human Music that features a song by Big Dipper as well as lead singer Bill Goffrier's other band, the Embarrassment. The Embarrassment had broken up well before the assemblage of Big Dipper, but reunited during Big Dipper's prime. It was during this period in 1988 that Human Music was released. The compilation features just as many Homestead bands as not, including a bunch of Flying Nun bands (the Clean, the Chills, the Verlaines, and the Tall Dwarfs) since apparently Homestead [...]

I haven't been so good about updating regularly, but I'm looking to fix that, I swear. We just got a Wii up in this bitch, and with that, papers and reports and speeches to prepare, a vegetable garden in need of nurturing, and baseball season in full swing, I get a little distracted. But I have good intentions! I'm a big fan of The Best Show on WMFU. In the few years that I've been listening to it, one of the best things I've gotten out of it is an introduction to the band Big [...]

Formed in 1985 in the Boston music scene, Big Dipper has been around the block. As 1992 rolled around, Big Dipper was no more, until recently. On March 18th, 2008, Merge Records released Supercluster: The Big Dipper Anthology . This "supercluster" includes Big Dipper's debut album, as well as their 2 following LP's. Along with a few other bonus items, the set includes a previously unreleased CD, better known as the "lost" album. They might be from the [...]
