The shining city lights of New Orleans were momentarily eclipsed by the neon haze of thousands of LED lights and the bobbing glow sticks of a perpetually dancing crowd on the banks of the Mississippi River. In “That B.E.A.T.” Abteen Bagheri explores the Bounce scene, interviewing local artists, shooting live shows and juxtaposing the music with beautifully shot imagery of the bayou. While not revelatory, it’s an intimate portrait of a secluded subculture. I particularly enjoyed seeing an outsider’s - in this case Mannie Fresh’s - enthusiasm and support for the scene.

Last Tuesday New Orleans bounce superstar Big Freedia — "The Queen Diva" — elevated a Lee's Palace audience to a fantastic plane where butt shaking became as natural as buying a loaf of bread. I'm honestly hard pressed to remember a single song but that wasn't really the point. The point was to have fun, and I certainly had fun as everyone else seemed to.
