Egyptian Lover performing in NYC (with Big Freedia who is touring with for the Postal Service!?)

Egyptian Lover performing in NYC (with Big Freedia who is touring with for the Postal Service!?) Greg Broussard, better known by his stage name Egyptian Lover , is an American musician, vocalist, producer and DJ, and was an important part of the L.A. dance music and rap scene in the early 1980s... The Egyptian Lover started out as a DJ in Los Angeles with Uncle Jam's Army DJing dances as large as the L.A. Sports Arena with 10,000 people. He began recording around Los Angeles in 1982 as a member of the Radio Crew, and also Uncle Jam's Army. In the early days of hip hop albums were rare, so most of The Egyptian Lover's [...]

I’ll Be Your Mirror 2013.

I’ll Be Your Mirror 2013. It's with a faint sense of trepidation we hike forever upward toward Alexandra Palace, not least as the sweltering trudge seemingly represents the metaphoric arrival of festival season which begins in earnest in but a few short weeks' time. It's the time of the season for early starts and later nights, lager glugged from the moment morning stumbles into afternoon as liver, lobes and inner ears quiver as one. Which painfully reminds me I've neglected to bring the old in-ears. Shite. Though Karen O & co. haven't opted for anywhere near as ruinous a line up as ATP [...]

In Photos: Buku Music + Art Project 2013

The shining city lights of New Orleans were momentarily eclipsed by the neon haze of thousands of LED lights and the bobbing glow sticks of a perpetually dancing crowd on the banks of the Mississippi River. This was Buku Music + Art Project : the eclectic two-day festival that took over the Mardi Gras World facility last weekend. While gates opened around four in the afternoon each day, the party lasted until three in the morning. Regardless of the ground's close quarters, each stage felt as if it belonged to an entirely different festival. There was something [...]

That B.E.A.T.
In “That B.E.A.T.” Abteen Bagheri explores the Bounce scene, interviewing local artists, shooting live shows and juxtaposing the music with beautifully shot imagery of the bayou. While not revelatory, it’s an intimate portrait of a secluded subculture. I particularly enjoyed seeing an outsider’s - in this case Mannie Fresh’s - enthusiasm and support for the scene.

Album Review: Various Artists – Son of Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys

Those familiar with the first Rogue’s Gallery issued back in 2006 might approach news of a follow-up collection, Son of Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys , with a mixture of delight and apprehension. This curious enterprise, the brainchild of Pirates of the Caribbean team - specifically, Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski, and producer Hal Willner - brings the light of day to largely traditional songs of the sea that otherwise might have remained in Davy Jones’ locker. The performers lend a whole new meaning to that familiar title, Various Artists, as the [...]

Big Freedia shakes some serious booty at Lee's

Big Freedia shakes some serious booty at Lee's Last Tuesday New Orleans bounce superstar Big Freedia — "The Queen Diva" — elevated a Lee's Palace audience to a fantastic plane where butt shaking became as natural as buying a loaf of bread. I'm honestly hard pressed to remember a single song but that wasn't really the point. The point was to have fun, and I certainly had fun as everyone else seemed to. All of this is due to Big Freedia's superhuman ability to inspire butt shaking via the use of butt shaking music, lyrics about shaking butts, asking audience members to shake their butts on [...]

Johnny Depp taps Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Michael Stipe for pirate song compilation

Johnny Depp taps Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Michael Stipe for pirate song compilation Back in 2006, fresh off of  Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest , actor/believable pirate Johnny Depp , director Gore Verbinski, and producer Hal Willner rounded up the likes of Lou Reed, Nick Cave, and Bono for Rogue's Gallery , a collection of modernized "pirate ballads, sea songs, and chanteys." Now, with nary a pirate movie in sight, the Hollywood heavyweights are readying to set sail again, having organized an equally star-studded follow-up entitled Son of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys . The two-disc, 36-track collection features [...]
