DJ Premier somehow unearthed a ten minute version of Big L and Jay-Z's freestyle over Milk Bone's "Keep It Real (Freddie Gibb's "Ghetto"). The legendary session went down on Feb 23 '95 in Strech and Bobbito studios. This is probably one of the most treasured tapes in hip hop history featuring two of the greatest if not THE greatest MC's to hold a mic.

One thing Knx has a knack for aside from crafting amazing beats, is reworking songs from other artists. His sound is distinct, so when you hear these remixes it breathes new life into them and they sound like completely different songs. The past few EPs have been primarily instrumentals, but this project (aptly titled WrapTaypes.Port.1 ) is a set of hip hop remixes. I pulled out a few of my favorites here. Head over to his Bandcamp and support the man. He's out here killing it. [...]

In his latest, Voodoo Farm throws in a barrage of heavy hitter MC's from back in the day. From Biggie to 2Pac to Big L, each lies down for a few with the darling White Stripes gal, Meg. I don't know if I'm feeling her as much as I'd like in this, but it's a small price to pay for this behemoth of a track. Oh, [...]

Whilst we may known for our refined palette in underground disco and house and often only spotted ripping some muscle in the gym or spinning wax at da hottest clubz, once every so often (most Thursdays) we switch our dumb bells for an XXL Fubu vest (dress) and swing on down, John Wayne style to The Social , just off Oxford street for some beer, bitchezzz and...hip hop karaoke (observation only) It's pretty hit or miss, but the odd time they'll spin 30 minute intervals crammed with the finest old school 90s flavas! In honour of these little [...]

Battlecat At the risk of excluding forgotten pioneers, you can trace the local roots of LA hip hop production to five names: Dr. Dre, Joe Cooley, Egyptian Lover, Arabian Prince, and DJ Battlecat. The latter broke in as a 16-year old DJ in the early KDAY era and remains one of the most influential architects of West Coast rap. When Snoop went into the studio last month [...]

Most people know the original version of this track from the Trespass Soundtrack, which dropped as a promo only 123 back in 1992. In early 2000 hip-hop heads were finally able to hear the original version (actually titled "Knockin' Niggaz Out") featuring what would have been Big L's debut had the label not rejected it as being "too hard". This track was remixed by Lord Finesse and his production partner Davel "Bo" McKenzie (The Alumni) in 2004, and was intended to be used on the Funky Technician Remix Project, an album which is finally dropping in April 2012 [...]
Think of the first James Bond movie you ever saw as a kid. Was the opening action sequence, a staple of the franchise, not the most thrilling thing your young eyes had ever witnessed? In a few short minutes you learned everything you needed to know about 007: he's clever, he's lethal, he has toys cooler than anything your parents let you buy, he has women you can only dream of, and he never ever gets hit by the innumerable bullets shot at him. Those crafty escape or chase sequences set the tone for the rest of the film, bringing [...]
Legendary MC lives on with yet another solid posthumous release. Before he was tragically gunned down in 1999, Lamont "Big L" Coleman was one of the deftest rappers that New York's brimming scene had to offer. His vivid, focused narratives painted dark pictures of the streets of Harlem, he regularly spat out insults and similes so impressively disgusting that they could make Odd Future queasy, and his flow was unwaveringly crisp, suitable for virtually any beat. The latest in a string of posthumous releases, The...

Paul Nice brings it back with some old jams, but new remixes with a variety of underground hip-hop artist. It's hard to withstand some old school jams, but I think Paul Nice did an amazing job on some of these tracks. Blaze a 50 (Paul Nice Remix) / Nas Lucifer (Paul Nice [...]
