There's just not much love left in the world, particularly for Cherub . They just hate against those rich hoes and those high class folks who just made it too quick (or stepped in a pile). You all know what I'm talking about. Champagne and cocaine is apparently the fix for that predicament. Don't try this at home! But seriously, we've got a slew of good mixes this week on our Weekly Download with a Gorillaz cover by Animalweapon and a Lana Del Rey cover of "Video Games" that might actually [...]

Big Sir's new album Before Gardens After Gardens occupies an unique headspace that in itself has been enough to promote repeated play. The album opens with "Regions", built on a vocal line and trafficking bass with other buzzes and whistles appearing by end. "Ready on the Line" arrives with the offsetting of beats and pulses setting the backdrop for vocal expressions and talk of radio. Elsewhere the mood travels from slightly eerie to more reflective slipstreams with implications of dance dispersed as well. Good show. Listen to a few tracks below to zero in on things. [...]

One of the most fruitful weeks yet this year for new music releases. We're proud to feature Philadelphia's own Dr. Dog whose Be The Void is out today. We're quite excited about this album, not only because they're from Philly, but their last effort Shame Shame featured some great tracks such as "Jackie Wants A Black Eye" and "Where'd All The Time Go". Lots more to get to this week including The Twilight Sad with their creepy-titled No One Can [...]

Big Sir , the Los Angeles-based project of vocalist Lisa Papineau (M83, Air) and The Mars Volta bassist Juan Alderete, will release their third album, Before Gardens, After Gardens, in February. The two composers’ articulate, electronic-tinged blend of R&B, jazz, and hip-hop falls somewhere between Papineau’s acoustic solo work and Alderete’s forays into prog-rock as part of The Mars Volta. Before Gardens, After Gardens ’ first single “Ready on the Line” spikes Papineau’s exquisitely harmonized Bjorkian voice with whistles, chimes, and mechanical claps. The subtle background heartbeats, reminiscent of Timbaland's early work with Aaliyah, [...]

It looks like it's going to be a big year for my kind of music. New albums are coming from Broken Social Scene, Frightened Rabbit, Miles Kurosky, Big Sir, Shout Out Louds, Sally Seltmann, Dosh, Owen Pallett, Blockhead--the list goes on and it's only February. Forget all that mushy Valentine's crap, this is the kind of sweet stuff that makes my heart beat faster. Aside from chocolates, of course. Here's an assortment of classics, if you will, a la the famous Whitman's sampler . [...]

I mentioned the other day that I "had" to make a mixtape because I lost a bet and I put up a few songs from it. After thinking about it (and asking a few friends), I decided to go ahead and post the whole thing. So here it is in its entirety. I call it "Snow Mix." How original is that? It's not got much to do with snow, actually, but I didn't know what else to call it! The Sweet Serenades -- "Mona Lee" [...]

I'm having trouble moving on to new music as I'm still processing 2008. I suspect this is a metaphor for my life, but for the moment I'm just going to examine it at face value. I've been thinking about how my top-ten list didn't include any female artists. Mates of State is a male/female duo, this is true, but none of the others are fronted by women or were solo women artists. I know this shouldn't bother me just for that reason alone, and [...]
