photo: christian landry Brett Milano, a Boston music writer and pal, recently interviewed Paul Westerberg for the Rock Band site ("Alex Chilton" is featured on RB2). He dishes on his ode to the Big Star frontman, the "493 record and a maybe-kiboshed, maybe-not-kiboshed Mats reunion. His son plays Rock Band but not he: It's beyond my coordination to hit the buttons. Here's the transcipt, and full audio ! Tags: alex chilton , big star , paul westerberg , replacements , rock [...]

A classic Deserving of a spot on any mix CD Worthy of a download, but not of frequent play Dump it like a hot rock In the counterintuitive world of the early 1970’s music scene, Big Star, which churned out two albums filled with radio-friendly power-pop gems, [...]
Great topic of debate here at Matadornights: Ten Songs By Musicians Who Died Too Soon. Their list includes: Elliot Smith "Needle In The Hay" Metallica "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth" (featuring the late Cliff Burton) Jeff Buckley "Halleluja (live at Sin-e)" Nirvana...

It's always nice to premiere a new song while strumming an acoustic guitar on a park bench on a sunny day. That's the concept that Haley Bonar takes in this, a premiere of the new track "Bad For You", which is a great little diddy that we can't help but let get stuck in our heads. If you don't find amusement and smiles after listening to this track, stop reading our content. You do not belong here. Haley Bonar's latest, Big Star , is out right now and it is flat out wonderful. I had never heard the Yoko Ono song, "Mrs. Lennon," before. But Alex Chilton certainly has. In a 1987 interview with Dawn Eden, he admitted that "it's just like [Big Star's] 'Holocaust.' Exactly." The Bob: Did you have that song...

I have no idea who Big Star is. But I just recently found this fantastic cover of one of their songs done by Wilco. I can't really give an opinion on which is better since I've only heard the cover, but I am so enamored by the cover that I don't really have a desire to hear the original. I can't imagine it being any better than this. But I guess it's only fair that I give them some credit for writing a great song. Who knows maybe I'll be writing a whole piece on this mysterious Big Star soon. [...]

Hey everybody, this is the obligatory one-year anniversary post! Yes, my first official post appeared here one year ago today. Kind of hard to believe I 've made it for a full year, since I'm making this up as I go. Anyway, it's been lots of work, lots of fun, and very educational. Thanks to your comments and e-mails I've learned more about music in the last twelve months than ever before. And they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks... Just wondering... has Michael Cera changed his clothes (specifically that gd sweatshirt) in the last, oh, five years? And the use of the JUNO-brown-paper-bag-coveredsc hoolbook scrawl is offensive. Bah - I'm just old. On a better note: Chris Bell's Speed of Sound opens the soundtrack and it's nice to see Bishop Allen , former Bostonians (whose moniker's inspiration is a street one block from my house), getting their due. Some of their shouty, flailing indie pop. Middle Management Click Click Click Click [...]

As always in these situation: thank you, friends! Also [...]

Over the past few weeks, Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Denison Witmer has released several relatively spare covers to the internet as promotional teasers, part of a mechanism to build buzz in anticipation of Carry The Weight, an upcoming album of original songs. The approach is a familiar one, seen in an increasing number of singer-songwriters and bands teetering on the indie boundaries of folk music -- see, for example, the lo-fi bedroom covers of the Morning Benders, or the recently-featured popfolk take on the Smashing Pumpkins from newcomer Amie Miriello. ...we're blessed with a tremendous library system (courtesy of those crunchy-granola liberal thinkers in nearby Portland, who consider books and music to be an important resource for a strong community). So, in the spirit of turning you on to new grooves, here's the first of (still) another new (occasional) series from Fusion 45: I Found It At The Library. George Harrison - You - A semi-hit, I guess, from dear old George but highly underrated. An ass-kicking studio team, including our [...]
