If you like Big Star , and we most certainly do around these parts, then you probably know that Alex Chilton's counterpart in the band was one Chris Bell. The two were co-frontmen in the eventually doomed 1970's quartet, but not before they made some of the most formidable power pop that the world has ever known. After the band's demise, Chilton went on to a long solo career, and eventually reunited Big Star. Bell however, wasn't quite so lucky, and (sadly) died in a car crash at the much-to-young age of 27. >> We ignore about as many pitches in a day as breaths we inhale, but there are certain folks whose recommendations are lead-pipe cinches, and we got one of those cinchy pitches a few weeks ago about the fast-rising, London-based indie rock duo Big Deal . The pair, whose MySpace URL is charmingingly MySpace.com/WeAreABigDeal , flew onto the radar of the British rock press after only its second show, and Big Deal 's debut single "Homework" b/w a cover of Big Star 's "13" doesn't even street until 18 Nov. and is not yet available [...]

7 Years ago today the late, great Elliott Smith died. There is still some debate as to whether he committed suicide or not. But that's another matter altogether. This post is to celebrate the life of Smith and the never ending legacy that he left behind. I'm a huge fan of his songwriting skills and voice but i'm simply in awe of the raw emotion he could pluck and strum out of 6 simple guitar strings. There are only a handful of people in this universe of ours who [...]
Cougar Microbes caught up with Alice Costelloe, one half of upcoming East London duo Big Deal, for a brief (and often humorous) email Q&A. Here is what we found out: - Cougar Microbes: What time did you wake up today? Was it out of choice or necessity? - Alice Costelloe: Necessity, we had to get [...]
Cover Me speaks to Less Than Jake frontman/guitarist Chris Demakes at Chicago's Riot Fest about the band's new record of television covers, and about the craft of cover songs in general.
On the thirteenth day of Rocktober Alex Chilton gave to me....a killer cover of his song " Thirteen ." Elliott Smith - Thirteen.mp3 ( Big Star cover) From : The Complete Live Covers compiled by Rawkblog . This version was recorded on June 2, 1998. Such a sweet song about the naive innocence of adolescence, made even sweeter by Elliott Smith's tender voice. Yeah, I know it's "Rocktober," but this is about as rocking as Smith gets, which is fine by [...]
A review of punk band Less Than Jake's new "TV/EP," a 16-song collection of tunes from the television.
What a weekend. Friday night I got to see Emeralds and drink some good beers, last night I saw Enter The Void , and tonight I am watching Best Worst Movie as I pen this entry. It's kind of amazing to think that I saw Troll 2 for the first time on HBO almost twenty years ago, and now there's a documentary about its "cult classic" status. What's next, an Cinefamily-approved Airborne screening at the Silent Movie Theater? Hmm...that gives me an idea... Nah, not now. I've got a mix tape [...]

dale dreiling Teenage Fanclub make pop songs like Big Star but make them faster and lasted longer, and their newest Shadows is out now on Merge. They speak now before returning to America and display respectable capability for details on rock ghosts and rock genitals. This interview by Chris Ziegler. What happened the day you met Little Richard in an L.A. hotel? Norman Blake (vocals/guitar): I can tell you exactly what happened—I can't tell you the year. We were staying in the Hyatt in L.A.—that [...]

Conducted by Capt. Obvious Obvious: The songs on your new album Epic are more involved than those on Because I Was In Love . Was this a conscious effort to distance yourself from the singer/songwriter label? Van Etten: A combination of things really... My writing is more confident and playing with an electric guitar vs. acoustic has made my style a little more aggressive than before. I felt these new songs would benefit from a [...]

Dungen by Sarah Morrison Just when you think summer's over, a heat wave comes to L.A. and Waved Out 2 comes to the Echoplex, to hose us down with the reverb-soaked sounds of teenage noise pop, chill wave, surf punk and psych-folk. I didn't know what to expect. The only bands listed on the bill whose names I recognized were the trippy headliners, the Entrance Band and Dungen, who were playing the first show of their US tour. Sponsored in conjunction by the Aquarium Drunkard music blog, KXLU and L.A. RECORD, the all-day event featured an [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive Had the Posies spent this spring recording the kind of album they thought they were going to make, the minimal rehearsal time they've allowed themselves for their upcoming fall tour might have been sufficient. Unfortunately, what started out as a back-to-basics rock album morphed into 'Blood/Candy,' an ambitious song cycle that the veteran band will release on Sept. 28. "We're used to doing things [...]

![Review: Calories | Basic Nature [MP3]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2814649_lg.jpg)
The fact that this record was originally to be titled Habitations and released months ago on an entirely different label doesn't necessarily account for a more-pronounced emotional polarization in Calories ' music, but it is an interesting parallel. Heretofore the Birmingham, England-based post-punk threesome was known for power, economy and exuberance. Calories ' revelatory 2009 full-length debut Adventuring conveyed a sense of optimism and possibility. By contrast, Basic Nature is more emotionally complex and more texturally varied, and the record carries a weightier sense of reckoning and resignation (indeed, even the [...]

Capital got a bunch of smart music writers together to list their favorite end of summer songs . It's a good list, but it's missing two top-tier, if somewhat obvious, "summer outros." "September Gurls" is the perfect longing, holy-crap-I'm-already-yearni ng-for-my-summer-lady-and-the- sun song. "September" on the other hand, is an end of the night and end of the summer track, though the party vibe leaves you hoping for an Indian summer. Big Star - September Gurls Earth, Wind & Fire - September

Dear Frontier Psychiatrist, Why are all indie rockers anorexic little boys? -Kurt Co-bese Dear Kurt, The answer to all questions of the form "Why are some group of men how they are" is: Girls. As adult men, there are many ways for us to attract girls. Humor. Success. Talent. Puppies . Alas, in our formative years, the options available are not so diverse. In truth, only two types find bountiful booty during this period: those who are precocious in the field of competitive sports, and those who, as it [...]
