I'm usually not into muscle cars or muscle guitars, but the Canadian blues-rock group Big Sugar's "500 Pounds" album always seems to rev me up. Guitarist Gordie Johnson is just plain dangerous. Johnson and his pals race through "Ride Like Hell" without ever braking. They also amp up their cover of "Dear Mr. Fantasy." I love Traffic's original version, but it never worked me into a frenzy like Johnson's whirlwind guitar solos do. And they stir up "Sugar in My Coffee" with ferocious instrumentals. I also like "All Over Now." There's still danger lurking in [...]

My introduction to Canadian blues rockers Big Sugar was this cover of the BTO classic "Let It Ride," and I guess it was sorta my outro-duction too; it's the only song of theirs I've ever heard. But damn, what a doozy it is! That guitar's got some of the meatiest, thickest, most ballsy sounding tone [...]

In the '60's, Bachman emerged from Winnipeg, that frigid Canadian prairie town, to blaze a trail to the top of the American pop charts. As guitarist for the Guess Who , Bachman co-wrote rock-radio staples such [...]
Canada has a wealth of artists who receive minimum recognition south of the border. There are a slew of musicians that most Americans have never heard, yet are everyday big names up here. Big Sugar probably fits that bill. Canadians are well acquainted with this band and so should the rest of the world. Unfortunately they disbanded a couple years ago, The band broke up in 2004, after, according to the band's website, Gordie Johnson became frustrated with Canadian radio programmers who claimed his single "All Hell for a Basement" was "too Canadian" (as the song refers the province of [...]
Note: I wrote this post, and the next one in Peru this past month, but was unable to post them at the time. I'm now back safe and sound in North America. Needless to say, the New Years show mentioned below has come and gone. I have been in Lima, Peru for the past 2 weeks. I've been having an amazing time! The people are amazing, and I have seen so many brilliant things. I'm sadened to admit that my trip here is already half over. But there is one thing about Peru that is driving me banana [...]

I saw Gordie Johnson climb up on stage and perform briefly with the Reverend Horton Heat at their last Ottawa show. That got me thinking that Big Sugar was a semi-big band at one time in Canada. They had a couple of hits...nothing that really crank my shaft, but some people dug it. So what the hell ever happened to them?
