It may be a new year, but the folks on the East Coast impacted by the recent mega-storm incongruously dubbed "Sandy" (as if it was some spunky neighborhood gal) are still trying to put the pieces back together. If you're looking for a way to help, you can come rock out at Bottom of the Hill tonight . The night features two Bay Area bands (indie-pop quartet and recent NYC-to-SF transplant Big Tree and Oakland-based genre-benders Bonnie & The BANG BANG ), as well as two [...]

We've tallied the results for the Open Submissions stage of our SF Bay Area Year End Poll. All of the submissions were ranked by Deli Editors from other scenes, and the list of acts that have advanced to our Readers'/Fans' Poll phase are below. We will also be releasing the list of nominees chosen by our local "scene expert" jurors very soon. Thanks to all the rad folks who submitted their heart and soul to us. Our open submissions pool was truly a celebration of the Bay Area's talent and diversity. [...]

Californian folk-pop quintet Big Tree , are a band of massive sounds, funky danceable chords and hypnotic vocal harmonies. Sounding passionate, cheerful and sensual simultaneously is a skill hard to perfect, but Big Tree has it down to a fine art. The bands latest release ‘Little EP’ is just that; a collection of six pure, untouched songs that are heavenly on the ears. As a live performance recording the E.P has a natural lo-fi quality to it, which is what makes it so exquisite. ‘Time’ is a song that slows everything down to make [...]

Little EP by Big Tree By now some of you may know the story of Berkeley quintet Big Tree : falling under that common, often unexplainable, West Coast magnetic spell, one day suddenly leaving their Brooklyn roots behind and venturing to the Pacific to start anew. They had just completed their second LP at the time, This New Year , and we've enjoyed watching them get acclimated to the Bay, whether it's been on stage at Noise Pop or creating Marin-inspired music videos . On [...]

T he New England winter mix of snow and rain beats down relentlessly outside the door as I search through the emails containing info on new bands and their latest singles sent to us every day, hoping to hear something that pulls me out of my gloomy day doldrums. Californian quintet Big Trees have chosen the traditional route to capturing their music for us to hear. This summer they hit the studio to record some tracks live on 2" reel tape. The result is new EP 'Little' and taken from it is the dreamy Americana of 'Time' which you can stream below or head over here to download for free. Time by Big Tree

When Big Tree got around to recording Little EP they didn't each condemn themselves to anechoic solitary confinement; instead, they took a more organic approach and recorded all three songs together in one hyper-productive, ten-hour session onto a reel of 2" tape. Onto the result, they added three more songs, recorded live at San Francisco's Rickshaw Stop. The result is a warm, ecstatic album, human to its very core. Infused with relentlessly singable mantras, raw and emotive vocals, and soul-bolstering instrumentals, the album is a barefoot walk on warm soil [...]

Back in February during The Budos Band 's Noise Pop performance, we were pretty clear with the pleasure each of the opening bands brought us prior to the main act. This included Berkeley quintet Big Tree . Comprised of Kaila McIntyre-Bader, Anna Ghezzi, Dan Pirello, Luke Bace, and Matt Schory, Big Tree originated in Brooklyn in 2008 before packing up their van and heading west - succumbing, as they put it, to the pull of Northern California's redwoods. Big Tree released their second full-length, This New Year , in [...]

San Francisco has Brooklyn, NY to thank for Big Tree . After a few successful cross-country tours, winning the Deli's Artist of the Month poll, and two Daytrotter sessions, the band said goodbye to New York City and drove its vegetable oil powered van 3,000 miles our neck of the redwoods. Inspired by the beauty of Northern California, Big Tree shot its new video for "Augury" in the Marin headlands and Easter Island. Watch it below or here . "Augury" is a track from Big Tree's latest full length release, This New Year , [...]

There are also a few shows happening if you like it slightly more youthful. Also this week: CREED! Thursday, May 10th The Dead [...]

I'm quickly approaching a saturation point with respect to chamber folk, drawn largely from a sense that too many bands are, consciously or not, falling into a paint-by-numbers approach that means a lot of unearned grandiosity. Not so, thankfully, with Big Tree 's "Storm King," and the video for the song seizes on the track's fluidity, building something subtle and beautiful until the big sonic payoff. The Berkeley band's latest album, This New Year , is now available on multi-colored vinyl from Soul Step Records , and they'll be performing at [...]
