I'm quickly approaching a saturation point with respect to chamber folk, drawn largely from a sense that too many bands are, consciously or not, falling into a paint-by-numbers approach that means a lot of unearned grandiosity. Not so, thankfully, with Big Tree 's "Storm King," and the video for the song seizes on the track's fluidity, building something subtle and beautiful until the big sonic payoff. The Berkeley band's latest album, This New Year , is now available on multi-colored vinyl from Soul Step Records , and they'll be performing at [...]

A beautiful southern California afternoon in 1974. The local bank's glass front doors burst open, and out you gallop with two huge bags of cash. Sprinting three full blocks to the pastel Mustang convertible where your aviator-donning getaway driver waits, you hop over the passenger side door and speed away. The out-of-breath bank tellers can only watch as you and your buddy turn around to laugh, ripping 90 miles per hour through a red light before disappearing into the distance. The perfect soundtrack to this nostalgic scene? A Staten Island instrumental ten piece group called The Budos [...]

The beginning of this song suggests something along the lines of "Sounds Of Silence" coming on. The build-up is subtle, but with Cranberries-esque vocals, it's there, and you can tell something is coming. 1:53 in, the drums cement things. It's like that point in Drake's "We'll Be Fine" when he says "well fuck, let's get it then." There's no turning back from a moment like that in a song. By two minutes in, you've got a wall of vocals and handclaps, and it's clear that this is no "Sounds Of Silence." It's better that way. Heard this one [...]

Being sick is terrible. I've been fighting something nasty since Tuesday. Luckily the worst was out of the way fast - after recording a 101 degree temperature Tuesday night, the fever subsided and I've slowly returned to a state that's manageable. I was still a bit stuffed up on the 25th, but by 10pm all that was left was sniffling and the occasional cough - my regular voice was back. On November 25, I decided to do something a little different. Not only would I tell a few stories about [...]

Ambling, endearing folk/pop of the unvarnished, organic variety spiked with some jazzy, loosely-woven harmonies is the calling card of Big Tree , a Brooklyn band led by songwriter Kaila McIntire Bader that began in a circle of musical friends at Sarah Lawrence College. "Storm King" is one of our favorite tracks from their recently released sophomore album This New Year , a shy piano ballad that builds to a heartily sung chorus surrounded by rolling drums and syncopated handclaps. Rarely does something this earnest and heartfelt feel so easy and liberating at the same [...]

Back in September, I babbled on (as I do) about my intense Like for the sweet, sweet sounds of Brooklyn's Big Tree . Organic, effortless musical beauty emanates from Kaila McIntyre-Bader and Co. to the point that their music should come with a "heart-healthy" stamp on their packaging. So it's no wonder that their new music video for Storm King , off This New Year which dropped October 4 th 2011, would be filled with images at once so naturally simplistic [...]

One of the best new releases of the week comes from a band that sent their music submission directly to us. It's the new album from The Walls, a popular rock band from Ireland. First formed in 1998 by brothers Steve and Joe Wall (previously members of the The Stunning) . This week they released [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Once again we're deluged from all sides by some top notch tunes. So here is the best of what we've picked up via the web and into our in-box recently. Consider a smorgasbord of musical sounds - all you gotta do is take the ones you like. Easy! First up is a new track from the Dex Romweber Duo . The Death of Me is another fine example of their feral blues mixed with some freewheeling rockabilly guitar licks. Download The Dex Romweber Duo - The Death Of Me mp3 (from [...]

It's been a long time, but The Yellow Stereo is back in action! It also means that our staple feature, 'The Graboid' (Weekly/Daily/Whatever) also makes its triumphant return. This has always been my way to discover new music and while skimming through this week's releases, it quickly reminded me how useful doing this every week since 2006 has been for me. Hopefully, it has done the same for you. I haven't listened to many of these albums outside of Feist , DJ Shadow , and Zola Jesus , but have sampled enough to have a [...]
