Live At The Turntable Club was produced by music legend Niney The Observer and is the first live album to ever be recorded in Jamaica. This album allows us a glimpse into the 1974 Kingston club scene; a time and place that could be considered the big bang of modern music. The songs were mixed by King Tubby at his renowned studio on Dromilly Avenue and mastered in London at The Beatles' Apple Studio on Saville Row. Here is the song Have Some [...]

Buried on a Sunday. From ancient British nursery rhyme - also known as Solomon Grundy - straight to infectuous early-sixties ska song. As a bonus: two more songs that namecheck Solomon and his rather rapid decline. And as the mighty Big Youth toasts over K.C. White's Anywhere But Nowhere , and the fun duo Lloyd & Carey utilises World Upside Down by Joe Higgs, you get to hear these excellent roots tunes as well. Big up. Eric Morris - Solomon Gundie Lloyd & Carey - [...]

"My face is so pretty you can´t see a scar, that makes me the king in the ring by far..." Some killer reggae from the days when boxing was still fun and the rivalry between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier held the world spellbound. Big title bouts like the Thrilla in Manilla captured the imagination on the island of Jamaica too apparently, as many a knockout reggae song paid tribute to the legendary heavyweights. Note that toasters Big Youth and Dennis Alcapone both use Burning Spear´s legendary riddim to salute Smokin´ Joe. "With the [...]

" A sensitive person receives fifty impressions where somebody else may only get seven. Sensitive people are so vulnerable; they're so easily brutalized and hurt just because they are sensitive. The more sensitive you are, the more certain you are to be brutalized, develop scabs… I can't trust anyone enough to give myself to them. But I'm ready. I want it. And I may, I'm almost on the point, I've really got to … Because—well, what else is there? That's all it's all about. To love somebody. — Marlon Brando in a profile of him done by Truman [...]

" AAArrrrrrhhh oooooooooohhhhh shhhhhiitt ffcckkkk AIIIIIIIGHHGgggg GGGGoodd PPPPlleease kKKKKiilllll mMMMMeeee aaaayyyyyyyyyyKKKKKkkkgg !!!!!!!!" That was what I sounded like the day before yesterday at 1 in the morning. For those that are wondering where I have been for the last few days, I gave birth to a kidney stone. Wikipedia , under Kidney Stone symptoms , describes it quite accurately: "Often described as 'the worst [...]

I'm not sure how many of you out in cyberspace grew up in the Bay Area during the late 70's/early 80's. Nor do I know, if you did, if you remember how at the crack of dawn before the cartoons came on, how KTVU would play an almost Helen Levitt-esque video slide show of life in Oakland, set to What's Going On by Marvin Gaye . Due to my childhood addiction to morning cartoons, this video, along with Gaye's most famous, will forever be etched in my brain. So in honour, today we have Jamaica [...]

"When we are afraid we ought not to occupy ourselves with endeavoring to prove that there is no danger, but in strengthening ourselves to go on in spite of the danger." - Mark Rutherford "So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." - Franklin Roosevelt "A timid person is frightened before a danger, a coward during the time and a courageous person afterwards." - Jean Paul Richter "The secret of reaping the greatest fruitfulness and the greatest enjoyment from life is [...]

A little bit of classic Reggae, a little bit of genetic engineering... Big Youth was a Reggae dude who was really into his dreads. I mean, he mentions them twice in three words in his album title, and in about half the song titles on this record as well. I would make fun of him for this, but, as you can see, his dreads were so powerful that they actually produced a clone of Big Youth within his own hairdo. I call him Little Big Youth. [...]

I'm a human puddle right now. 90+ and humid. And a glutton for punishment, I'm heading for Shea Stadium tonight to possibly get rained on. Nothing to do but wallow in it, sit back and let the heat-hazy minutes creep by. White Mice - "Youths of Today Version" I Wayne - "Living in Love" Dawn Penn - "You Don't Love Me (No No No)" [...]
