As someone who's worked with a who's who of female artists including Pink , Christina Aguilera and KT Tunstall , Perry is the first to support woman rockers, [...]
With their 60s classic prog vibes and their rock edge, there's a lot to set Bigelf apart from the rest of the pack but frontman Damon Fox's two keyboards flanking him help. No need to ask for more keyboards. Nope.

Love the tagline on the MySpace page of trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack : "If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing slowly." "Heligoland," the band's fifth album and first in seven years, was worth the wait — the duo of Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall tapped contributors such as singer Horace Andy (a Massive Attack regular) and the likes of Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and Martina Topley-Bird (Tricky), among others. On their tour, which kicks off a three-night at the Wiltern tonight, Del Maja and Marshall [...]
Did you know that prog rock still existed? Neither did I until stumbled onto Bigelf . I caught these creepy bastards at a festival I played earlier in `09. Their Wolfmother-meets-The Beatles-meets Jethro Tull whackness contrasted all the jangly guitared lo-fi indie bands like a double shot of Wild Turkey 101 after a few rounds of Shirley Temples. It hurt, and the burn felt sensational. Their new video is 5 minutes long and in it they melt faces (literally). Ladies and Gentleman I give you Bigelf. Deal with it.
Los Angeles psychedelic-doom drivers Ancestors are already back with another new album after last year's acclaimed two track debut Neptune With Fire, and this time around they're arguably even more ambitious. On the eight track Of Sound Mind, the band expands their scope and continues their doom-laden trip down nostalgia lane, with plenty of prog [...]

Bereft of sleep and common sense, we made our way into the fire. When LA burns, it really burns. Smoke billowed from the foothills of the northern Los Angeles and the air was dense with the scent of burning brush. Hollywood in itself is a planet, and driving through ash strewn streets made the resident freaks and geeks that much more colorful. We started our Ripple field trip packed with anticipation, on Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood. The temperature was a balmy ninety plus degrees, fire raging in the hills, and the clock had yet [...]
Full confession: I missed my pre-show interview slot with Bigelf's eccentric frontman Damon Fox because I fucked up with directions on the subway. I've lived in this city for 22 of my 27 years on this planet and it still happens from time to time... oops. Doesn't help that the Beacon Theater, the host of [...]
I had a total stoner moment on Thursday; in my haste rushing out of the MS Mansion to attend a private, live performance of Living Colour's entire new album Chair in the Doorway (Axl's gonna write about this later today) I prepped our Funny Photo Caption Contest post ahead of time, leaving blank spaces for [...]
Congrats to __ and ___ for winning last week's funny photo caption contest. Both winners get a copy of Heart of Darkness, the ass-rippingly good new album by Burnt by the Sun, for coming up with the following captions to the photo at right: Let's continue our Gathering of the Juggalos 2009 photo series with this [...]
The second annual Progressive Nation Tour - featuring a re-jiggered and suddenly worth seeing lineup of Scale the Summit, Bigelf and Zappa Plays Zappa supporting Dream Theater - hit New York's historic Beacon Theater on Sunday night. This year's proggier leaning lineup (last year's had Opeth, BTBAM and 3 in the support slots) brought out [...]

There's an old saying that goes something like this. "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death . . . I wouldn't want to set up camp there." I think the same thing could be said for Damon Fox's mind. The main architect of the glorious doom, bombastic glam that is Bigelf , Damon's mind is not a safe place for the uninitiated. No one knows what's lingering behind each synapse, hiding between the axons, lurking within the dendrites. Last year, I thought I was going out on a [...]
Back in March I bitched that this year's Progressive Nation lineup - featuring Pain of Salvation, Beardfish, and Zappa Plays Zappa supporting Dream Theater - was decidedly less metal than last year's lineup (which featured 3, BTBAM, and Opeth supporting DT - killer show) and wasn't worth the price of admission to anyone under 50. [...]

Damn. Another overly hectic and superbly busy month has come and gone. In fact, it's been so damn busy this month that I never found the time to surf in and out of the nooks and crannies of MySpace like I usually do. But don't think for one minute that I'm gonna' let you Waveriders down. Ho no. I was still able to spend some quality time looking under some of the cyber rocks and peer in those deep and cavernous virtual crevices. The flight plan this month is sketchy at best. I'm not gonna' lie to you. We're not [...]

[Happy birthday to John Frusciante, long may you shred ...] Most L.A. music fans have seen Jessica Dobson — she's the guitarist in Beck's live band — but not many know her as Deep Sea Diver . Signed to Atlantic Records at age 20, Dobson is quite a performer in her own right. ( OC Weekly had a nice story on her in December.) Prior to gigs opening for the western leg of Conor Oberst's tour, Deep Sea Diver is celebrating the release of [...]

[Heard on the local beat ...] L.A. quartet Bigelf is described as "30 years behind and five years ahead of what's happening," and I'll buy that. Fronted by Laurel Canyon-bred Damon Fox, the foursome channels Black Sabbath into a sprawling, gnarly mountain of sound — and while you're not liable to find many of the hipsterati fawning over their vintage prog-rock, rest assured Bigelf has its well-deserved supporters. Their latest album "Cheat the Gallows" came out on Linda Perry's Custard Records . [...]
In concert, Bigelf sounds a lot like its name -- big. The first week of The Biggest Loser big. Stimulus plan big. Is there treble on this island big. There couldn't have been more than 50 people at t... Continue reading "Concert Review: Bigelf, Wednesday, February 25, at the Riot Room" >

Honestly, I don't really know who Bigelf is. The people in our message board, do, though. The band recently played Columbus and I was struck by how completely different the reviews have been. Click here to read the discussion Gonzo loved the show: If Jesus had giant balls, a shit ton of gear and 3 other bad mother fuckers and they formed a band I'm sure it would be the closest thing to Big Elf. Or in other words, Big Elf is the closest thing to seeing god. All I [...]

Let the invasion begin! After blowing our minds with their latest sonic creation "Cheat the Gallows" Bigelf are pushing envelopes within the minds and souls of music fans across the country with a big late winter tour. Pope and I freaked when we first learned this and will do our damndest to make a show! I'm thinking March 5 in LA, Pope! All you waveriders out there, come join us. I'm sure the Bigelf stomps it live! [...]

Anyone who's seen our Ripple Music Round-up , our views on the best heavy rock of 2008 will know how I feel about the guys. Their last album, Cheat the Gallows, was a mind-bending, senses-shattering, IQ melting extravaganza of progressive, neo-psychedelic, retro-seventies rock/pomp mayhem. You don't believe me? Check out the lists of some of the other music sites who linked up with us to share our Year's End lists. Yup, you'll find Bigelf there also. Seem s the world is rapidly [...]
